Courtesyof AtelierBow-Wow EnglewoodCommons Venue: TheEnglewoodVillagePlaza TheEnglewoodVillagePlazaat58thStreetandHalstedservesastheentrypointtotheEnglewoodNatureTrail.Asatwo-mile-longgreeninfrastructurereuseproject,thetrailbuildsonfoundationalvaluesofanti-displacement,fosteringcareerpathways,andcommunitystewardship.TheplazawillserveasagatheringspacefortheEnglewoodcommunitywitharangeofusesincludingaweeklycommunitymarket,alearninggarden,andasiteforculturaldiscussionsandfilmscreenings—allrootedinBlackculinaryandlandtraditions.SurroundingtheTrailisanetworkofurbanfarmsledbyacollectiveofBlackandBrownfarmerswhoaregrowingalocalfoodsystemthatwillenableBlackfarmers,producers,andfoodrelatedbusinessestogrowalongthe59thStreetcorridor. AsthemainentrypointtotheEnglewoodNatureTrail,the58thStreetPlazawillbeadynamichubforcommunity-driventacticalurbanismandplacekeeping.DesignelementsfocusedonurbanfarmingandcommunitygatheringspaceweaveinthemissionofGrowGreaterEnglewood,theorganizationstewardingthePlaza.Throughaco-creationprocesswithGrowGreaterEnglewood,AtelierBow-Wowdesignedraisedgardeningbeds,indoorgrowinghouses,newofficespace,aforty-personcommunaltable,andtheEnglewoodCommons.BoththeCommunityTableandtheCommonsservemultiplefunctions:theformerisaplacewhereresidentscanbreakbreadwiththeirneighborsandfamilies,feedingbothbodyandsoul.Thelatter,tobeconstructedin2022,willbeagatheringdeckforevents,markets,andperformances.Together,thesecommunalspaces,whichwillbeopentoallpartnersandcommunityresidents,reinforcetheideathatcommunitywealthisrootedinitshealth.AtelierBow-Wow’sworksareproducedfromtheconcept“architecturalbehaviorology.”Theword“behavior”includesbehaviorsofnaturalelementssuchaslight,air,heat,wind,andwater,andhumanbehavior,andbuilding’sbehavior.“Architecturalbehaviorology”investigatesthemechanismofthesebehaviorsandaimstosynthesizethemtooptimizetheirperformanceinitsspecificcontext.Itfocusestherepetitive,rhythmical,shareableaspectsofbehavior,andsiftsthearchitecturaldesignfromindividualitybasedintocommonalitybased.ByprogrammingspecificallyfortheBlackcommunityontheSouthSide,thePlazawillallowcommunitymemberstoshareforgottenandoverlookedhistoriesandpracticesrootedintheland.ItwillshednewlightonfoodsfromtheBlackcommunityandtheirconnectionandinfluenceinotherdiverse communities.ThroughparticipationintheChicagoArchitectureBiennialandthepartnershipwithAtelierBow-Wow,Englewoodwillhaveanothervibrantpublicspacethatallowsforcommunitystewardshipandprogramming.
