InatelevisiondebatebetweenTraskandProfessorCharlesXavier,TraskrevealedandthenactivatedtheSentinels,whopromptlytookthisastheircuetoimplementMasterMold'sschemetoturnthetablesonit'screator,havingruncountlesspermutationsitcametotheconclusionthattheonlywaytoprotecthumanitywastoruleoveritthemselves.TheSentinels(underordersoftheirprogenitor)kidnappedtheircreatorandreturnedtotheirsecretsubterraneanfortressandpresentedhimtotheAlphaSentinel,MasterMold,underHisguidanceXavier'sstudents,theX-MenfoundtheSentinels'base.Nosoonerhadtheyarrivedatthelocationthatthefortresses'defenceslaunchedanattackatthemutants,inacounter-offence(whichfailed)afallenBeastwasinterrogatedbyMasterMoldandtohishorrorTraskcametounderstandtheintentionsofTheseparticularmutantsandthecoldrealisation,thatHISSolutionhadNowbecomeafargreaterthreattotheWholeofMankind.Actingonthespurofthemoment(regardlessofthefactthatthisactwouldseedHisdestruction,also)Trasksetaheatsourceagainstarepositoryholdingvolatilechemicals,destroyingMasterMoldandtheSentinelsintheexplosion,TraskwascrushedbythefallenAlphaSentinel,andwaslaterdiscoveredbyHissonLawrence,recentlyreturnedfromavisittoafamilyfriendoflongstanding,RobertChalmers.Intheinvestigationthatfollowedevidencewasfoundshowingthatmutantshadbeenpresentatthetimeofhisfather'sdemise,thisrevelationfuelled'Larry'tocarryonHisfather'swork,(hisfather'sfearhavingbeenconfirmedforhim)intentonmakingthethreatthathisfatherhadforeseen,(namelytheX-Menpaythepricefortheheinouscrime(Hemistakenlythought)thathadbeendonetohisfamily. Larry,washimselfamutant,afactthatwasknownonlybyhisfather,andsharedwithfamilyfriend,FederalJudgeRobertChalmers,upontherealisationthatwhatheputdowntoa'NightTerror'thathissonhaddreamtindetail,hisMotherdyinglongbeforeithappened,hadactuallybeenaclairvoyantepisode.Afterseveralobservationsundercontrolledconditions(unbeknowntohisson)TraskandChalmerscross-referencedeventsthatLawrencehadconveyedundercross-examinationwhileintheR.E.M.state,againsteventsthathadoccurredintheperiodthathadelapsedafterhis'premonitions"hadbeencatalogued.timeaftertimeheforesaweventswithoutpriorknowledgeofthesubjectmatter.InhisheartTraskwantedtoprotecthissonfromthis'curse'andfearfulthatashegrewolderhisclairvoyancehadtobehidden,andwiththeaidandsupportofhisfriendandcollaborator,theycommencedworkonthecreationoftechnologytonegateandblocktheperceptionofwhatwouldonedaybeknownasthe'X-gene',producingapulsethatsuppressedhismemoryduringR.E.M.sleepandafterlongexposurehisabilitywaned,cloakingitfromthesensitivescanningapparatusthatTraskandhisteamofAnthropologists,Scientists,RoboticEngineersandCyberneticistswereinstallingintohiscreations.Aftermanymonthsoftestingandrefinementoftheprototype,histeammanagedtoproduceaminiaturisedandmorepowerfulversionoftheprototypethatwasinstalledintoanornatemedallionandgiventoLawrenceonthepremisethatitwasHisMother'swishthatHeshouldNevertakeitoffunderanycircumstance.Yearspassed,LarryhadtakenonhisFather'sobsession,utilisingadvancementsinHisfieldandbreakinggroundinHisownright.EventuallyHeannouncedtotheworldthesecondgenerationofSentinelstheMKIIsbuilttosurpasstheMKIinAllaspectsoftheiroperatingsystemsButhisreignwasshort-livedduetotheinvolvementoftheX-Menonceagain.Larry's"MarkII"SentinelswerelaterpersuadedbyCyclopsandwiththeaidofJudgeChalmersHetwistedtheirBlinddependencyofLogictoflyintothesun,ashewasabletoconvincethemthattheyneededtodestroythesuninordertocompletelypreventmutation.[3] TheSentinelprogramwasreawakenedasProjectArmageddonundertheleadofStevenLang,whocreatedtheMarkIIISentinels,someofwhichweretheso-calledX-Sentinels,SentinelswholookedliketheoriginalX-Men.[4] Themostlong-livedSentinelprojectwasthatofProjectWideawake,agovernmentagencyledbyHenryGyrichandValerieCooperthatpurchasedSentinelsfromSebastianShaw,themutantBlackKingoftheHellfireClub.Project:Wideawakealsohaditsownresearchanddevelopmentdivision,basedatCampHayden,whichincludedanattempttorecreateNimrodandusethistechnologytoadaptthepurchasedSentinels.SentinelscreatedbythisprojectfoughttheX-Men,theNewMutants,theFalcon,andX-Factor,amongothers.[citationneeded]
