TheDepartmentbelongstotheCollegeofScienceandsupportscutting-edgeresearchinhumangeography,physicalgeography,andgeospatialtechnology.TheresearchactivitiesoftheDepartmenthavediversifiedovertheyears.AlthoughprimarilyfocusingonTaiwan,broadergeographicalareas,bothwithinthelocalregionandbeyond,haverepresentedtheresearchinterestsofthestaff. In2012,theQuacquarelliSymonds（QS)company,thewell-notedratingagencyinhighereducation,releasedits2012WorldUniversityRankingsbySubject,inwhichtheDepartmentranked17thinthe“Arts&Humanities–Geography”category.TherankingoftheDepartmentstandssecondonlytoitscounterpartsintheUniversityofSingaporeandUniversityofTokyoinAsia,andonthetopintheGreaterChinaCircle,includingMainlandChina,Taiwan,HongKongandMacao.
