Astheyleftthestop,GrifounditoddthatGrannyDumecouldn’trememberhim,butwasabletorememberamuchmoredistantmemoryofherson’stoy.Whilewalkingthroughtown,theyencounteredtheMagistrate,whodemandedthatGripayhisdues.AsLaraarguedwiththeMagistrate,severalriverspiritsdrenchedtheMagistrate,aswellasthecontracthehadmadewithGri.Furious,theMagistrateorderedhisguardstoarrestthem.AsGriandLararanfromtheguards,awomannamedHannahhelpedthembyhidingtheminherstudio.HannahliedtotheMagistratethatshehadn’tseenthetwo,towhichtheMagistrateremindedheroftheiragreement,andthat,asherartpatron,heexpectedanewpaintingsoon.Afterheleft,GriandLaracameoutandthankedher.AsLaramarveledatherpaintings,Hannahinvitedthemtocomevisitwhenevertheywanted.Aftertheyleft,theguardsfoundthemonceagainandthepairspentthenextseveraldaysrunningandhiding.Duringtheirmisadventures,theMagistratevisitedHannahandthreatenedhertofinishherpaintingsontime.Sheremindedthemofherdealtoonlyuseonepersonpermonthforherplans,towhichtheMagistrategrudginglyagreed. StandingUptotheMagistrate Atthetownsquare,LarafoundtheMagistrateandhisguardsthreateningArisolandherdaughterRami,thegirlwhosekitehadbeenstuckontheroof.TheMagistrategaveArisolonefinalwarningtopayhertaxes.Afterheleft,LaraapproachedArisolandaskedifshewasintrouble.ArisolexplainedthattheMagistrateleviedexorbitanttaxesonthetownspeopleandthat,iftheywereunpaid,hewouldtaketheirhomeandkickthemouttothebackalleys.WhenLaraaskedhowshecouldhelp,ArisolaskedhertodefeattheSproutSilkwormsandFlowerWings,astheywerestealingfromthetownspeople.AfterhelpingArisol,LaracontinuedtosearchforGri.SometimeafterLaralefttosearchforhim,GriarrivedatthetownsquareandencounteredArisolandRami.ArisolthankedGriforhelpingRamiwithherkiteandaddedthatevenLarahadhelpedthemawhileback.ShealsoapologizedonbehalfofthetownforrejectingGri,tellinghimthatitwasn’thisfaultforwhathappenedtohim.SheexplainedthatthetownwasafraidoftheMagistrate,andsonoonereachedouttocareforhimwhenhewasleftalone.GriwassuddenlyremindedofLara’swordsabouttrustingothersandthepromiseshehadmadetohimabouthelpinghimwhenhewasintrouble.Heshookoffthememory,wonderingwhyhewassuddenlyrememberingit. Suddenly,ariverspiritappearedfromtheMagistrate’sclothes,andLarathenrevealedthatshehadcreatedtheearthquakeasadistractionsothatthespiritcouldstealtheMagistrate’sstoragekey.AftertheMagistratewaschasedoutoftown,LaraandGriwenttotheMagistrate’sstorageroom,thoughGritoldherthatthekeepsakewouldn’tbethere,astheMagistratehadmadeitsoundlikeitwashiddensomewhereelsewhentheychasedhimoutoftown.However,henotedwithdisgusthowmanytreasurestheMagistratehadstoleninhisnever-endinggreed.Laratoldhimthathergrandmotherusedtosaythatithappenedwhenwishesturnedtoobsession,andthatthelinewascrossedwhenonestartedwishingthingswouldgobetterforthemthanothers.WhenGriaskedLarawhatshewouldwishfor,shetoldhimthatshewouldwishforhimtobefree.WhenGripointedoutthattheyhadalreadymadeithappenbychasingtheMagistrateoutoftown,Laradecidedthatherwishwouldthenbetomakethehopesanddreamsofthepeoplewhowantedthebelltoringtocometrue.ShethenrealizedthattheyshouldtellHannahaboutwhathappened,butGritoldhertogoonahead,ashewantedtohelpLaralearnmoreaboutthebell,sinceshehadbeentoobusyhelpinghim.OnceLaraleft,Gricontinuedsearchingthestorageroom.Onescrollinparticularkeptcatchinghiseye,thoughhedismisseditaspartoftheMagistrate’scollection.
