Anunknownquantitywrittenasaletter.AvariablecanberepresentedbyanyletterintheEnglishalphabet,mostoftenxory.Variablesmaybeassociatedwithspecificthings,likexnumberofapplesorydollars.Othertimes,variableshavenospecificassociation,butyou’llneedtomanipulatethemtoshowthatyouunderstandcertainalgebraicprinciples. Coefficient係數 Acoefficientisanumberthatappearsnexttoavariableandtellshowmanyofthevariablethereare.Intheterm4x,4isthecoefficient. Equation方程式  Twoexpressionslinkedbyanequalsign.MostofthealgebraontheSATconsistsofsolvingequations. Term項 Theproductofaconstantandavariable.Or,aquantityseparatedfromotherquantitiesbyadditionorsubtraction.Forexample,intheequation thesidetotheleftoftheequalsigncontainsfourterms{3x3,2x2,–7x,4},whiletherightsidecontainstwoterms{x,–1}.(Theconstants,4and–1,areconsideredtermsbecausetheyarecoefficientsofvariablesraisedtothezeropower:4=4x0.)Soeveryterm,includingconstants,istheproductofaconstantandavariableraisedtosomepower.
