ThemostprominentaspectofDRRRisbyfaritsmethodofstorytelling.InsteadoffocusingonalinearnarrativeandplotthatgoesfrompointAtopointB,ittakesonthemoreunique"vantagepoint"kindofstructure.Astructurethat'suncommonlyusedandrightfullyso,asit'sinherentlymoredifficulttopulloffwithoutbecomingmuddledandtaxing.ThisabilitytonotonlycapturebutadequatelypresentthismethodofstorytellingissomethingthatDRRRdeservescreditfor.Veryfewanimetitlesdaretotacklethisapproach,oneotherfamouscasebeingBaccano!,butwe'lltalkaboutthatlater. Thestory,whenboileddowntoit,isaboutgangdisputesinthecityofIkebukuroandallthepeoplethatareeitherdirectlyorindirectlyaffectedbyit.Throughthe"vantagepoint"methodmentioned,weseeeventsslowlyunfoldfromoneofourmanycharacters'pointofview.Atanygiventime,weasviewersaretakentoadifferent1stpersonpointofviewandseewheretheyfallintotheshow'soverarchingstory.Together,thesecollectiveof1stpersonPOVshelpprovidetheplatformforthemainonetotakeform. Soundsfunright?Wellhere'swheretheREALproblembegins.Yousee,thisuniquemethodofstorytellingispossiblytheshow'sgreateststrengthandweaknessaswell.Becausewearealwaysswitchingbetweencharacterstopiecetogetheranygivenstoryslowly,itcanoftenresultinaverydraggedoutnarrative,ofwhichplotprogressionfeelsnon-existentforlongperiodsoftime.AndbecauseoftheconstantbackandforthbetweenwhatPOVshotwe'refollowing,thepersonalitiesthemselvesarenevergivenenoughtimetorevealanyfurtherdimension.Thisforcesthecreativeteamtoresorttopersonalityquirksinplaceofactualcharacterfocus.Maythatbethesmartguywithasinistermotive,theairheadgeniusprofessor,theshort-temperedbartender,theplethoraofone-notebaddies,andthelistgoesonandon.Allofthecharactersjustcomesacrossasjustthat,"characters."Noneofthemevergettingthechancetofeellikefleshandbloodbecausethematerialathandhassimplyrobbedthemoftheopportunity.Itfeelslikeyou'rewatchingthewritersjustdoodleinanyarchetypethatcomestomindandpushingthemontothesettosomesillykidsstageperformance.Andforashowthatdependsheavilyonthecharactersandtheirinteractionstosellitsnarrative,thisbecomesahugeletdown.Infact,thecityofIkebukuroitselfhasmorepersonalitythanthecharacterslivinginit.Evenifthatwastheintention,whenthenarrativerestrictsyoutofollowingonepersonatatime,agrowingsenseofdisinteresteasilyfesters. Alsobacktotheothertopicathand,thepacing,myGodisitsluggish.Aplotpointthatwouldtypicallybewrappedupin1-3episodestakesanENTIREseasontounfold.Againthisduetotheuniquestorytellingsinceittakesa"beatingaroundthebush"approachtoeverything.Everycharacters'perspectiveisneededtobringforthanykindofprogressionandgiventhat20+charactersaremasqueradingaroundthecityatanygiventime,needlesstosay,ittakesalonngggtimebeforeanythingofgreatsignificancehappens.Thisismadeevenworsebytheexcessivepaddingsincescenesarestretchedoutlongerthanwhat'sneeded.AttemptingaTarantino-stylenarrativeisn'ttheproblemhere,it'stheshowitselfthat'sfumblingtheformula. Notmuchcanbesaidabouttheartandanimation;they'reprettystandardfarebytoday'sstandards.However,theanimationwasveryinconsistentattimes.Itshouldn'tbeanythingtotakeawayfromyourexperience,butforanyonepayingcloseattention,itcouldbecomeaglaringissue.Thecharactersdesigns,ontheotherhand,arequiteunique.Eachgivenaspecificappearancetomatchtheirpersonality.Manyofwhichareeasilyrecognizablewhencomparedtotheattemptsmadebyotherseries.Ithasaparticulartrademarkstylethatsetsitapartinthatregard. Thesoundtrackremainsrelativitythesameasitsprequel.ItisanotherstandoutofDRRR,withmusicthatrangesfromvariousgenresandsamples.Youcangofromaboomingjazzsectiontoasoftpianoballadaccompaniedbyaxylophoneandflute.Itgiveseverythingacertainpizzazz;likethezaninessofthecityitselfcapturedinauditoryform.Standouttracksbeing"TheSought-afterExtraordinary,""RussianBodyguard,""StumblingSamba,"justtonameafew.It'sagreatstand-alonelistenforthosewithtimetospend. Andnowit'stimetoaddresstheobligatorycomparisonwheneverthistitleisbroughtup:Durarara!! Inmanyways,itcanbesaidthatifitwasn'tforBaccano!Durarara!!wouldn'thaveseenthelightofday.SeeingthatbothwereanimatedbyBrainsBase,wascreatedbythesameperson,andcontainthesamesetup,fromthegangfeudsoccurringinabigcitytotheintertwinedstorytelling,usedtochroniclethetale.AlmosteverythingyoucanfindinBaccanoyoucaneasilyfindinDrrr,exceptforonething;Baccano!wasneverdraggedouttoasnailpace.Yousee,thatdebateyoumayhaveorhavenotcomeacrosswithpeoplesaying"Baccano!isbetterthanDRRR"actuallyholdsmerit.Baccanodidthesamethingbutneveroutstayeditswelcome.Ittoldaninterestingstoryaboutimmortalsandgangs,gottothepoint,andended,that'sit,caseclosed.It'saprimeexampleofashowthatutilizesthesamemethodofstorytellingtherightway.Now,ifDrrrhadfollowedsuitandtookthesame"tothepoint"approachtherewouldn'tbeanissue...,buthereweare,30+episodeslater. Durarararrararararararararaisn'tnecessarilyabadseriesbyanymeans,butwheneverIviewit,Ifindmyselfwonderingwhatthepointofitallis.Quirkycharactersdoingquirkyshit.Theonlysavinggraceistheintertwinedstorytelling,andeventhen,thataspecthasitsissues.It'stooflimsilyhandledforashowdealingwithgangfeudsandspreadsitselffartoothintoleaveanyimpact. Forabitofrecap,theseriestakesplaceinIkebukurowheremanyabnormaleventstakesplaceinthisseeminglynormalcity.ThewayDurarara!!X2Shouoperatesinvolvesmanycharactersandeventstogetherthatareintertwined.Assuch,expectthenarrativeandperspectiveoftheseasontofollowtheirstories.ThefirstfewepisodesreintroducesyouthefeelofDurararaagainwiththewildfunoftheshow.Thiscourcoversseveralarcsthatdetailsvariouseventsthatisimmaculatelyengineered. Thefirstfewepisodesalreadysetsupanarcforawildfrenzytastewhentheaudienceisintroducedtomysteriousmurders.Dubbedthe‘Hollywoodmurders’,theseasoninvolvesavarietyofcharactersyoumayalreadybefamiliarwith.InfamousheadlesshunterCeltyreturnsaswellinacat-and-mousegamethankstotheYadogiriShinningCorporation.Then,there’salsoMikado,Izaya,Shizuo,Anri,Shrina,Aoba,andmostoftheothersreturningtoreprisetheirroles.FortheHollywoodMurdersarc,theseriesdubsitmoreaboutplottransitionratherthanbackgroundenforcement.Wedon’tfindouttoomuchabouttheculprit’sbackgroundbutwedolearnabouttheirmotives.Unfortunately,thefirstarcfeelsrushed.WhatisrefreshingthoughisthatitintroducessomeforgottencharacterssuchastheOriharasisters.Honestly,ashowlikethisispackagedwithcharacters.Andfromthatpackage,there’sallsortsofpersonalities.IguesstheOriharasisterswouldfitabitintothebizarretypebecauseoftheirrelationship.Infact,theshowoffersalotofrelationships.It’saboutconnectionandbuildingupeventsthatrelatesoneanother.Ifthere’sonethingthatDurararadynamicallyshines,it’sthechemistry.Almosteverycharacterrelationshipintheserieshasitsmoments.Ittemperswithfeelingsandemotionstobringoutthebestofeachotherwithrelationships. Astheseriesgoeson,welearnmoreaboutsomeofthenewfacesintroducedinthisshow.Havinganestablishedcastisimportantbutalsointroducingfreshnewonescanalsoberefreshing.OnesuchcharacternamedRokujoChikagebringsinhisgentlemanlycharmintothisseasonwithhisladies’manpersonality.Hisinvolvementinoneofthearcsbecomesintriguingasweseedifferentsidesofhim;especiallywhenwomenareinvolved.Then,there’salsoacutegirlnamedAkanethatgetsintroducedthisseason.Rather,there’sactuallyanentirearcthatfocusesonherthatallstartedbecauseofthemanipulativeschemesofIzayafromthebackgrounds.It’samisunderstandingthatturnsintoafrenzyasAkaneseemstowanttohuntdownacertainsomeonethatIzayadubbedasadangerousman.(ohtheirony)Butbesidesthat,thearcalsofocusessomeinterestingpointsinvolvinggangwarsandapotentialnewrivalforCelty.Rather,IcouldlabelhermoreasanassassinwhenweseehowrecklessthiswomannamedVoronareallyis.Interestinglyenough,theshowdedicatestimetofocusonherbackgroundincludingherlonelychildhood.There’salsoacertainsimilarityandcontrastbetweenherandanothercharacterfromRyogoNarita’sotherwork,Baccanothatstandshere. Mikado,theprimaryprotagonistfromthepreviousandcurrentseasonalsogetsquiteadecentamountofspotlight.AshowlikeDurararaneverneglectshisfaceespeciallywithhisresponsibilitiesbeinginpartofDollars.ThestorygetsmorecomplexasMikadorealizesthecomplicationshegetshimselfinwithothersthatchallengesDollars.Itescalatestoaclimaxwhengangsbecomesinvolvedinawarthatpitseachother.It’stimelikethiswhenDurararareallyspicesupthefunwhileeffectivelygettingtoitsplot’sclimaticpoint.Bypittingcertainprominentfiguresinarivalrybetweengangs,yougetanentertainingrevolution.That’swhatreallymakesDurararaenjoyabletowatchasyouanticipatewhatmayhappennext.Plottwists,difficultdecisions,andconcretestorytransitions.Yougetthepicture.It’salmostaddictivetothinkaboutit…. Asaddictivetheshowcanbeforanticipatingevents,it’salsoquiterelaxingwhenittakestimeforabreather.Idon’tmeantheDollarschatroomthoughbecausethere’sallsortofchatterthere.ButforatalkyshowlikeDurarara,there’sagooddegreeofcomedicmomentsthatallhappensoverthecourseofthisseason.FromShizuo’spricelessreactionstoShrinaandCelty’srelationship,Durararaknowswhatitneedstocraftcomedy.ThiscanalsobeemphasizedinconversationalformatwithcharacterslikeIzaya.Ifyourememberhowmanipulativehewasduringseason1,thenyou’lldefinitelywanttogetthefullscooponwhathe’suptothisseason.It’snotonlythecomedythatbringsinentertainmentthoughbecauseactionalsotakesplace.Whetherit’sthegangbattlesortheShizuo’sfierceness,thisseasonneverforgetstoshowthepotentialofourcharacters.Allthataside,ittakesalotoffocustounderstandeverythingespeciallywiththecharacters.Almosteveryepisodeofthisseasonisbusywitheventsgoingon.Gettinglostwillendupnogoodandthisissomethingthatcanbefrustratingattimes. Ihavetoadmitthough,theartandvisualssuffersabitwiththisseason.Apparently,anewstudiocalled‘Shuka’isinchargewithproducingthissequel.Durarara!!X2Shouisapparentlytheirfirstworkanditdoesn’tmakeanimpressioninthefirsthalf.Someparticularepisodesareoffbalancewiththecoordinationofthevisualqualitywhileotherframesarelazy.Luckily,thesecondhalfdoesgetbetterwithsmootherbackgroundsandingeneral,betterqualitywithitsartwork.Characterdesignsremainsgenerallythesamewithourreturningcast.NewcharacterssuchasVoronaandRokujobringsstyletotheshowwiththeirlooks.Andwhiletheseriesisn’tentirelydedicatedtoactionscenes,itdoesmakeitnoticeableduringsomeofthegangbattles.Celty’sinfamous“Shooter”alsomakesitsappearancedecoratedwithpeculiarity. Fromatechnicalperspective,soundtrackisperformedonastrongstandard.TheOPandEDsongsforthisseasonnotonlyhasstylebutretainsitsupbeat.There’salsoaverydistinctiverangeofcharactervoicemannerismthatallmakesagoodimpression.TheOSTalsoisfluidthatflowswellrespondingappropriatelydependingonthescenario.Iexpectednothinglesswhenitcomestosoundtrackwiththisseason. 12episodes.That’showmanyittakestocoverthefirstcour.Andalthoughsomearcsdoesfeelabitrushed,it’shighlyentertaining.Theseductivecastofcharacterswillenthrallyoutolearnmoreaboutthemforthisseason;whethertheyareneworold.Thecomedyisgenuinewithwell-timeddialoguesandreactivescenes.Asashowthatconnectscharactersandstoriestogether,Durarara!!X2Shouisasolidexamplethatknowsunderstandssuchamission.Thisisthe1/3ofDurarara’ssequelprojectthatcelebratesthefranchise’s10thanniversary.AndIhavetosay,it’sofftoaprettydamngoodstart. ThefirstofthreescheduledDurararaseries,x2Shouisdividedintotwoarcs.Thefirstofthemisasimple4-episodestorypiecedtogetherfrommultipleperspectives.Thestoryitselfisn'tallthatimpressive,butitisimprovedbyitsuseofmultipleperspectives.However,therealpointofthisarcistointroducethenewcharacters,andbecauseofthearc'slaid-backnatureit'sextremelyfuntojustwatchthecharactersintersectandinteract. Durarara'smostnoteworthyfeaturehasalwaysbeenitshugecastofmemorablecharacters,andx2Shou ... followssuitbyintroducingalotmore.Withtheentirefirstarcdedicatedtothis,someexcellentstandoutsemerge,mostnotablyMairuandKururiOrihara,Izaya'syoungertwinsisters,whostealtheshowfortheirentiredurationonscreen.However,whilesomeofthenewcharactersareexcellent,thesheerexcessofthemisDurararax2Shou'sbiggestproblem. Oncethesecondarcgetsintofullswing,we'retreatedtoaplotbuiltaroundremnantfactionsoftheBlueSquares,anewgangcalledTorumaru,multiplecorporations,severalYakuzafactionswithlinkstosaidcorporations,aserialkiller,apairofRussianassassins,andayounggirlwithatazer,alongwithallthepreviouslyestablishedDollarsfromthepreviousseason.Thisarclasts8episodes-thereareasmanygroupsofcharactersinvolvedasthereareepisodesinthisstoryarc.Durararahasalwaysutilizedthiskindofchaoticclusterfuckwell,butinthisinstanceitbitoffmorethanitcouldchew. Becauseofthat,itcanbeastruggleattimestorememberwhichcharactersareinvolvedwithwhichothercharacters,andwhy.Italsoresultsinaveryunfocusedstory.Thereareseveralsmallerstoriesthatalltieintothebiggerpicture,butthemostimportantpartofthestoryrevolvesaroundasmallfactionoftheBlueSquaresemergingwithinanothergangandtryingtotakeitoverfromwithin,andthemincitinganall-outwarwithanothergang,whiletheirleadertriestostopit,andrealizesthatthegang'sownstructurehasworkedagainsthim,creatingasituationwhereheispowerlesstocontrolhisowncreation.Thisentiresituationisdeliberatelysetoffbyamanipulativegeniustoservehisownends.Ifthatsoundsfamiliartoyou,it'sbecausethat'sexactlywhatthelastarcofDurarara'sfirstseasonwasabout. IalwaysconsideredtheYellowScarvesarcofDurararaseason1tobeitsweakest,soarehashofthatarc,intheory,shouldhavebeenabadidea.However,theTorumaruarchasprovenitselftobeabigimprovement,despitesharingthesamestructure.Thistimearound,itrevolvesaroundabettersetofcharacters(despiteanunfortunatelackofIzaya),andhasreplacedteenageangstandirritatingmisunderstandingswithcrazyRussianassassinsandHILARIOUSmisunderstandings.However,itdoesstillfeelabitredundant.
