TheterrainoftheCBITheaterwasnolesschallengingthanthepolitics. Theregionhadfewmodernroadsorrailways. ThemajorityofoperationstookplaceinNorthernandCentralBurma,wherethelandscapewasdominatedbydenselywoodedmountains,scatteredstreams,andotherobstacles. Monsoonseason,whichbeganafterApril,wascharacterizedbyconstantrainfortwoorthreemonths. Theheavyrainturnedthefewavailableroadsintoquagmiresandledtoconditionsthatalloweddiseasessuchasmalariaanddysenterytothrive. Nevertheless,facedwithsuchhardships,AmericanandAlliedforcesremainedindefatigable. AmericanengineersconqueredthedifficultterraintocompletetheStilwellRoad,whichwasconnectedtotheBurmaRoadtoreestablishcontactwithChina. Otherunits,suchasMerrill’sMarauders(laterknownasthe475thInfantryRegiment),successfullyengagedJapaneseforcesonmanyoccasions,oftenwhileoutnumberedandbehindenemylines. Today,the75thRangerRegimenttracesitslineagetoMerrill’sMarauders.
