Thegrouphastwooperationalsquadronsassigned:the74thandthe75thFighterSquadronsbothflyingA-10ThunderboltIIattackaircraft. History[edit] WorldWarII[edit] GroundcrewsservicingaP-40ofthe23rdFGin1942. By15June1942,underordersfromTenthAirForce,anadvancecadreofpilotsandaircrafthadproceededovertheHumptoKunming,China,forcombatfamiliarization.Withoutceremony,the23rdFighterGroupwasactivated4July1942,markingthefirstsuchactivationofaUnitedStatesfighterunitonafieldofbattleinWorldWarII.[4][nb2] ClaireL.Chennault,meanwhile,hadbeenrecalledtoactivedutywiththerankofbrigadiergeneralandplacedattheheadoftheChinaAirTaskForce(latertogrowintoFourteenthAirForce).The23rdFighterGroupbecameacomponentoftheTaskForceandwasassignedthreesquadrons,the74th,75th,and76thFighterSquadrons.[5][6][7][8] ThegroupinheritedthemissionoftheAmericanVolunteerGroup"FlyingTigers"(AVG).FiveofChennault'sstaffofficers,fivepilots[4]and19groundcrewmenenteredtheUnitedStatesArmyAirForcesandbecamemembersofthe23rdFighterGroup.Approximately25FlyingTigerpilots,stillincivilianstatus,volunteeredtoextendtheircontractsfortwoweekstotrainthenewgroupfollowingthedisbandingoftheirorganization.TheoriginalaircraftofthegroupwereamixtureofCurtissP-40Warhawksfromabatchof50senttoChinafortheAVGbetweenJanuaryandJune1942,andafollow-upshipmentof68P-40Estransferredfromthe51stFighterGroupinIndiaandflownovertheHumpbypersonneltobeassignedtothe23rd,alsomostlyfromthe51stGroup.[citationneeded] OthersfromtheranksoftheoriginalFlyingTigersleftChinawhentheircontractsexpired,[4]althoughsomereturnedtodutylaterwiththeArmyAirForcesintheChina-Burma-IndiaTheater.InadditiontoinheritingoperationalresponsibilitiesfromtheAVG,the23rdFighterGroupalsobenefitedfromtheknowledgeandexperienceoftheAVGpilots,andtookonthenicknameofthedisbandedunit. Col.RobertL.ScottJr.,alreadyinIndiaasacommanderoftheHumpoperation,becamethefirstcommanderofthe23rdFighterGroup.[4]Hewouldlaterauthorthemilitaryclassic,"GodIsMyCo-Pilot."Ontheveryfirstdayofitsactivation,the23rdFighterGroupengagedthreesuccessivewavesofenemyaircraftandpromptlyrecordedthedestructionoffiveenemyaircraftwithnolossestoitself.[citationneeded] GeneralClaireChennaultwithaP-51Mustangandpilotsofthe23rdFG Thenextthreeyearssawthe23rdFighterGroupinvolvedinmuchoftheactionoversoutheastandsouthwestAsia.ItprovidedairdefensefortheChineseterminusoftheHumproute,[3]butitsoperationsextendedbeyondChinatoBurma,FrenchIndochinaandasfarasTaiwan.[3]Theunithelpedpioneeranumberofinnovativefighterandfighter-bombertactics.Thegroupuseditsso-called"B-40"(P-40'scarrying1,000-poundbombs)todestroyJapanesebridgesandkillbridgerepaircrews,sometimesdemolishingtheirtargetwithasinglebomb.[9]TheunitgainedanotherincreaseincapabilitywithitsconversiontotheNorthAmericanP-51MustangaircraftinNovember1943. Representativeoftheencountersundertakenbythissmallandoftenill-equippedgroupwasthedefenseagainstamajorJapanesepushdowntheHsiangValleyinHunan17–25June1944.[3]Ignoringinhibitingweatherconditionsandheavygroundfire,the23rdFighterGroupprovidedairsupportforChineselandforcesandrepeatedlystruckatenemytroopsandtransportation.ItseffortsinthisinstanceearnedittheDistinguishedUnitCitation.[3]In1945ithelpturntheJapanesespringoffensiveandharassedtheretreatingJapanesebystrafingandbombingtheircolumns.[3] Beforethe23rdFighterGroupreturnedtotheUnitedStatesinDecember1945,itwascreditedwithdestroying621enemyplanesinaircombat,plus320moreontheground;withsinkingmorethan131,000tonsofenemyshippinganddamaginganother250,000tons;andwithcausinganestimatedenemytrooplossofmorethan20,000.[4]Thesestatisticswerecompiledthroughatotalofmorethan24,000combatsorties,requiringmorethan53,000flyinghours,andatacostof110aircraftlostinaerialcombat,90shotdownbysurfacedefenses,and28bombedwhileontheground.[4]Thirty-twopilotsofthegroupachievedacestatusbyshootingdownfiveormoreenemyaircraft.[4] The23rdFighterGroupleftthetheaterinDecember1945andwasinactivated5January1946,atFortLewis,Washington.[3] PostwarEra[edit] The23rdFighterGroupwasreactivated10October1946,inGuamandassignedtotheTwentiethAirForce,equippedwiththelong-rangeRepublicP-47NThunderbolt,replacingthe21stFighterGroupandassumingitsequipment,personnel,andmission.[3][10]WhilestationedinGuam,the23rdbecameapartoftheUnitedStatesAirForce(USAF)whenitbecameaseparatemilitaryserviceon18September1947.In1948itwasassignedtothe23rdFighterWing[2]aspartoftheUSAFWing/BaseReorganization,[5][11]whichwasintendedtounifycommandandcontrolonairbasesbyassigningoperationalandsupportgroupstoasingleheadquarters.[12]InApril1949,thegroupmovedwiththewingtoHowardAirForceBase[3]inthePanamaCanalZone,whereitassumedtheairdefensemissionofthePanamaCanal,takingoverthepersonnelandequipmentofthe5600thCompositeGroup.[11]ItwasinactivatedalongwiththewingafewmonthslaterwhentheAirForceconsolidateditsoperationsinthePanamaCanalZoneatAlbrookAirForceBase.[3][11] AirDefenseCommand[edit] Thegroupwasredesignatedasthe23rdFighter-InterceptorGroup(FIG),activatedonceagain[3]andassignedtothe23rdFighter-InterceptorWing(FIW)atPresqueIsleAirForceBase,MaineaspartofAirDefenseCommand(ADC),withthe74thand75thFighter-InterceptorSquadrons(FIS)assigned,flyingNorthAmericanF-86ESabreaircraft.[13]Beforetheyearwasover,bothsquadronshadconvertedtoolderF-86As.[13]InFebruary1952,thewingandgroupwereinactivated,[3]inamajorreorganizationofAirDefenseCommand(ADC)respondingtoADC'sdifficultyundertheexistingwingbaseorganizationalstructureindeployingfightersquadronstobestadvantage.[14] InAugust1955,ADCimplementedProjectArrow,whichwasdesignedtobringbackontheactivelistthefighterunitswhichhadcompiledmemorablerecordsinthetwoworldwars.[15]Asaresultofthisproject,thegroup,nowdesignatedthe23rdFighterGroup(AirDefense),replacedthe528thAirDefenseGroupatPresqueIsleandonceagainassumedcommandofthe75thand76FIS,[3][16]whichalsoreturnedtoPresqueIsletoreplacethe82ndand319thFIS,[17]becauseProjectArrowwasalsodesignedtoreunitewartimesquadronswiththeirtraditionalheadquarters.[15]However,thetwosquadronswerenowoperatingNorthropF-89Scorpions[13]Inaddition,thegroupassumedUSAFhostresponsibilityforPresqueIsleandwasassignedthe23rdUSAFInfirmary[18](laterUSAFDispensary),23rdAirBaseSquadron,[19]23rdMaterielSquadron,[20]andin1957,the23rdConsolidatedAircraftMaintenanceSquadron[21]tocarryouttheseduties.In1957,thegroupconvertedfromtheF-89DtothenuclearcapableF-89H[13]armedwithAIR-2Genierockets.In1958,the76thFISmovedtoMcCoyAirForceBase,Floridaandwasassignedawayfromthegroup.The75thFISwasintheprocessofconvertingtoF-101VooDoos,whenthegroupwasinactivatedin1959[22]asPresqueIslewasbeingtransferredtoStrategicAirCommandashostbasefortheSM-62SnarkMissileandthe702ndStrategicMissileWing. Modernera[edit] 23rdOperationsGroup[edit] 23rdFighterGroupA-10ThunderboltIIsonalert On1June1992,the23rdTacticalFighterGroupwasredesignatedthe23rdOperationsGroupandactivatedatPopeAirForceBase,NorthCarolinaundertheredesignated23rdWingundertheUSAFObjectiveWingplan.Itwasgiventhemissionofcontrollingtheflyingcomponentsoftheparent23rdWing.Theseincludedbothfightersprovidingcloseairsupportandtheaterairliftaircraft.[5] InDecember1992,LockheedC-130Herculessfromthegroup's2ndAirliftSquadrondeployedtoMombasa,Kenya,toparticipateinOperationProvideRelief.TheaircraftandcrewsdeliveredtonsoffoodandotherreliefsuppliestosmallairstripsthroughoutSomalia.23rdWingC-130swerealsotaskedtoassistinotherhumanitarianreliefefforts,toincludeHurricaneAndrewinFlorida.TheyalsoairdroppedreliefsuppliesintoBosniaandHerzegovinaandflewreliefmissionsintoSarajevoformorethan28months.[citationneeded] InSeptember1994,itsC-130sparticipatedinwhatwastobethelargestcombatpersonneldropsinceWorldWarII,OperationUpholdDemocracy.Theyweretoassistindroppingmorethan3,000paratroopersfromthe82ndAirborneDivisionontoPortauPrinceAirport,Haiti.TheinvasionforcewasrecalledatthelastminuteafterwordthattheHaitianpresidenthadresigneduponhearingthattheaircraftwereontheirway.The75thFighterSquadron'sA-10sdeployedtheiraircrafttoShawAirForceBase,SouthCarolina,wheretheywerescheduledtolaunchcloseairsupportoperationsfortheinvasionforcebeforerecoveringinPuertoRico.[citationneeded] ThefirstoperationaldeploymentofacompositewinghappenedinOctober1994,whenIraqitroopsbeganmassingneartheKuwaitiBorder.Within72hours,56aircraftand1,500personneldeployedtothePersianGulfregionforOperationVigilantWarrior.Eventually,the75thFighterSquadronredeployedtoAlJaberAirBase,Kuwait,becomingthefirstU.S.fixed-wingaircrafttobestationedinthatcountrysincetheendoftheGulfWar.[citationneeded] On1July1996,the74thFighterSquadron'sF-16C/DFightingFalconsweretransferredtothe27thFighterWing's524thFighterSquadronatCannonAirForceBase,NewMexico,andthesquadrontransitionedtoFairchildRepublicA-10ThunderboltIIreceivedfromthe20thFighterWing's55thFighterSquadronatShaw.[citationneeded]Thisgavethe23rdGroupasecondA-10squadron.[5] 23rdFighterGroup[edit] On1April1997,the23rdOperationsGroupwasinactivatedandreplacedbythedownsized23rdWing,whichwasredesignatedasthe23rdFighterGroup.[5]The23rdFighterGroupwasassignedtothe347thWingofAirCombatCommandatMoodyAirForceBase,GeorgiabutthegroupremainedatPopeasaGeographicallySeparatedUnit(GSU).ItsC-130sandPopeAirForceBasewererealignedtoAirMobilityCommandandassignedtothe43rdAirliftWing.
