AllenM.SumnerintheAtlantic,26March1944 HerstayinHawaiilasteduntil23OctoberwhenshesteamedoutofPearlHarborincompanywiththebattleshipNorthCarolina,boundfordutyinthewesternPacificwiththeFastCarrierTaskForce.SteamingviaEniwetok,thedestroyerenteredUlithilagoonon5November.AllenM.SumnerremainedatUlithiuntil19NovemberatwhichtimeshedepartedtheatolltojoinTaskGroup(TG)38.4atsea.Afterrendezvousingwiththecarriers,sheaccompaniedthemtowatersnearYapIslandwhencetheaircraftcarrierslaunchedairstrikeson22NovemberbeforereenteringUlithithatsameday.Thedestroyerremainedtherefor5daysandthenreturnedtosea,boundfornewlyinvadedLeyteinthePhilippines.ShearrivedinSanPedroBayon29NovemberandbeganpatrollingLeyteGulf.Thatduty—punctuatedintermittentlybyairalerts—lasteduntiltheeveningof2DecemberwhenAllenM.SumnersetcourseforOrmocBayincompanywiththedestroyersMoaleandCooper. ReportsfromAmericanaircraftearlierthatdayhadindicatedthatanenemyreinforcementconvoywasenteringthebaythatnight,andthethreewarshipsweresenttodestroyit.Justafter2300thatnight,thedestroyerssufferedthefirstofmanyairattackswhenaMitsubishiKi-46"Dinah"–afast,twin-engine,reconnaissanceplane–droppedabombwhichnear-missedAllenM.Sumnerabout30yards(27 m)fromtheship'sstarboardbow,piercedherhullwithfragments,andstartedafireonboard.Bombfragmentsalsowoundedoneofficerand12men. Airattackscontinued;but,justaftermidnight,thethreedestroyersmadesurfaceradarcontactonapairofJapanesedestroyerslateridentifiedasKuwaandTake.Lessthan10minutesintothebattle,Kuwasuccumbedtothecombinedfireofthetwodestroyers,andthewreckedandburningmassbegantosink.Take,however,evenedthescorejustasAllenM.SumnerandCooperjoinedMoaleinfiringontheremainingJapanesewarship.OneofhertorpedoesslammedintoCooperamidships,brokethatAmericandestroyer'sback,andsankheralmostimmediately.LessthanhalfofCooper'screwmanagedtogetofftheship.Mostofthosewerelaterrescued—butbyPBYCatalinasratherthanbyCooper'sdivisionmateswhowerestillbeingsubjectedtoheavyshorebatteryfireandairraids.AnyattemptatrescuebyAllenM.SumnerandMoalewouldhavemadethemvirtuallystationarytargets.Atabout0145onthe3rd,thetworemainingAmericanwarshipsbeganretirementfromOrmocBayandsetacourseforSanPedroBaywheretheyarrivedlaterthatday. AllenM.SumnerspentthenextninedaysinSanPedroBayundergoingupkeepandrepairingtheminordamagethatshehadsufferedintheactionatOrmocBay.Thoughtheareawassubjectedtointermittentairraidsthroughoutthatperiod,AllenM.Sumnerrecordedonlyone,long-range—inexcessof9,000yards(8,200 m)—approachbyanenemyaircrafton6December.On12December,shedepartedSanPedroBayandjoinedthescreenofTG78.3,boundforthelandingsonMindoroIsland.ThattaskgroupconstitutedRearAdmiralArthurD.Struble'sMindoroAttackGroup.Althoughthegroupcameunderairattackduringthetransit,AllenM.Sumnerescapeddamage.On15December,shemovedinwiththeclosecoveringgrouptoparticipateinthepreinvasionshorebombardment,andthesubsequentlandingswentforwardagainstnegligibleopposition.Someenemyaircraftattemptedtoattacktheinvasionforce,andAllenM.SumnerjoinedMoaleandIngrahaminsplashinganenemylightbomber.Onthefollowingday,thedestroyerdepartedMindorotoreturntoLeytewhereshearrivedon18December.Between26and29December,thewarshipescortedaresupplyechelontoMindoroandbacktoSanPedroBay. 1945[edit] On2January1945,thedestroyerstoodoutofSanPedroBay,boundfortheinvasionofLuzonatLingayenGulfinthescreenforthecruisersandbattleshipsofViceAdmiralJesseB.Oldendorf'sBombardmentandFireSupportGroup(TG77.2).Earlyon6January,AllenM.SumnermovedintoLingayenGulftosupportminesweepingoperations.Aroundnoon,herunitcameunderairattackbykamikazes.Thefirstplaneretreatedinthefaceofaheavyantiaircraftbarragewhilethesecondattackerhoveredjustoutofrangeasadecoytomaskaruninbyathirdsuicider.ThelatterplanedoveonAllenM.Sumnerstrafingashecame.Heswoopedinoutofthesunonthedestroyer'sportbowandcrashedintoherneartheafterstackandaftertorpedomount.Thewarshiplost14menkilledand19injured.ExtensivedamagerequiredhertoretirefromthegulfandjointheheavyunitsofTG77.2.Nevertheless,AllenM.SumnerremainedinactionwiththatunitandsupportedtheLingayenoperationuntil14January. Onthatday,shebeganalongandsomewhatcircuitousvoyagebacktotheUnitedStatesforrepairs.ShearrivedatManusintheAdmiraltieson18Januaryandremainedthereforninedays.Shegotunderwayagainon27JanuaryincompanywiththeescortcarrierKadashanBayand,afterstoppingatMajuroenroute,arrivedinPearlHarboron6February.ShedepartedOahuthenextdayandarrivedatHuntersPoint,California,on13Februarytobeginrepairs.Herrenewalworkwascompletedon10Apriland,fourdayslater,shebegandutytrainingprospectivedestroyercrewsalongthewestcoast.Justoverthreemonthslater,on17July,shewasrelievedoftrainingdutyanddepartedSanFranciscotoreturntothewesternPacific.ThedestroyerarrivedatOahuonthe23rdandbeganthreeweeksoftrainingoperationsoutofPearlHarbor. On12August,AllenM.SummerstoodoutofHawaiitoreturntothewarzone.However,whenshewastwodaysout,theJapanesecapitulated.Nevertheless,thewarshipcontinuedhervoyagewest.Followingatwo-daystopatEniwetok,shegotunderwayagainon21Augustand,six-dayslater,rendezvousedwithTG38.3inJapanesewaters.Aftersomethreeweeksofpostwarpatrols,firstwithTG38.3andlaterwithTG38.1,thedestroyerputintoTokyoBayon16September.SheremainedthereonlysixdaysbeforegettingunderwayfortheMarianason22August.TheshipreachedSaipanthreedayslaterbutsoonresumedhervoyagebacktotheUnitedStatesarrivingonthewestcoastinOctoberandassumingdutyasatrainingplatformforprospectivedestroyercrews. 1946to1952[edit] TheseoperationscontinueduntilMay1946whenthedestroyerdepartedthewestcoast,boundfortheCentralPacifictosupportOperationCrossroads,theatomicbombtestsconductedatBikiniAtollintheMarshallIslands.Attheconclusionofthatassignmentlatethatsummer,shereturnedtoherformerwestcoastduty.On23February1947,AllenM.SumnerbegananextendedcruisetotheFarEastwhichincludedvisitstoAustralia,theMarianas,thePhilippines,China,andJapanbeforeherreturntothewestcoastforanoverhaulandsubsequentlocaloperations. Thatdutycontinueduntilearlyin1949atwhichtimetheshipwasreassignedtotheAtlanticFleet.ShetransitedthePanamaCanalinmid-AprilandarrivedinHamptonRoads,Virginia,on20April.Betweenthespringof1949andthespringof1953,thedestroyerconductednormalpeacetimeoperationsoutofNorfolk.ThatroutinewasbrokenonlybyatourofdutyintheMediterraneanSeawiththe6thFleetbetweenNovember1950andMarch1951.Otherwise,shecruisedalongtheeasternseaboardandintheWestIndiesconductingtraining—particularlyinantisubmarinewarfare. 1953to1966[edit] On24April1953,thedestroyerstoodoutofNorfolk,boundforheronlyassignmentinthewarzoneduringtheKoreanWar.SteamingbywayoftheMediterraneanSea,theSuezCanal,andIndianOcean,AllenM.SumnerarrivedinYokosuka,Japan,earlyinJune.After10daysinport,shejoinedTaskForce(TF)77intheSeaofJapanandbegantwomonthsofdutyasaplaneguardandantisubmarinescreeningshipforthefastcarrierswhiletheysenttheiraircraftagainsttargetsinNorthKorea.Whileshewasassignedthosetasks,thearmisticeof27JulyendedtheKoreanWar.FollowingatourofdutywithTF95patrollingthesoutherncoastofKoreaandabriefstopatYokosuka,thewarshipheadedbacktotheUnitedStatesviathePacific,thewestcoast,andthePanamaCanal.ShearrivedbackinNorfolkon27October. Overthenexteightyears,AllenM.SumneralternatedeastcoastandWestIndiesoperationswithsevendeploymentstoEuropeanwaters.Duringthefirsttwo—conductedinthefallof1954andthesummerof1955,respectively—shevisitednorthernEuropeanwaterstoparticipateinexerciseswithunitsofotherNATOnavies.ThethirdEuropeandeployment—totheMediterranean—cameinJuly1956.Duringthatfour-monthassignment,theSuezcrisiserupted,andAllenM.SumnersupportedtheevacuationofAmericancitizensfromEgyptatAlexandria.Onthefourthdeploymentoftheperiod,shereturnedtonorthernEuropeanwatersinSeptemberandOctober1957.InFebruary1958,sheembarkeduponanotherdeploymenttotheMediterraneanthatlasteduntilJuly.Afteraperiodofnormaleastcoastoperations,thedestroyeronceagainheadedtowardthe"middlesea"inFebruary1958.ThattourofdutydifferedfromthoseprecedinginthatAllenM.SumnerwasassignedtoindependentdutyinthePersianGulfandinthewesternportionoftheIndianOcean.ShereturnedtotheUnitedStateson30AugustandbeganayearofnormaloperationsinthewesternAtlantic.InSeptember1960,thewarshipvoyagedtotheMediterraneanoncemoreandagainservedonindependentdutyinthePersianGulfandinthewesternIndianOcean.ShereturnedtotheUnitedStateson19April1961and,on17May,beganafleetrehabilitationandmodernizationoverhaulduringwhichherantisubmarinewarfarecapabilitieswereimprovedandupdated. AllenM.Sumnercompletedheroverhaulon2January1962andresumedherscheduleofeastcoastoperationsalternatedwithMediterraneancruises.BetweenMarchandSeptember1962,sheservedwiththe6thFleet.SoonafterherreturntoAmericanwaters,PresidentJohnF.Kennedydeclareda"quarantine"ofCubainresponsetothesitingofoffensiveSovietmissilesonthatisland.AllenM.SumnerwasoneofthefirstwarshipstotakeupstationoffCubainOctober1962.Atthesuccessfulconclusionofthatoperation,sheresumednormaldutyoutofMayport,Florida.Thatemployment—includingfrequentdutyasschoolshipfortheFleetSonarSchool—continuedthrough1963andinto1964.InJuneandJuly1964,thedestroyermadeabriefdeploymenttotheMediterraneanforamidshipmancruise.Uponherreturntothewesternhemisphere,sheresumednormaldutyoutofMayport.Inthespringof1965,politicalunrestintheDominicanRepublictookhertothewatersaroundthattroubledisland.Uponconcludingthatassignment,thedestroyerreturnedtoMayportandresumedoperationsoutofthatport.InOctober,sheembarkeduponanotherdeploymentintheMediterranean.Afteraroutinetourofdutywiththe6thFleetinthe"middlesea,"AllenM.SumnerreturnedtoMayporton8March1966andbegan11monthsofoperationsoutofherhomeportwhichincludeddutyasasupportshipfortheGemini10spaceshotinJuly. Vietnam[edit] AQH-50DASHdronehoveringoverAllenM.Sumner'sflightdeck,1969. On7February1967,thedestroyerdepartedMayportonherwaytoherfirstandonlydeploymenttotheVietnamwarzone.SteamingviathePanamaCanalandHawaii,shearrivedinYokosuka,Japan,on14March.Fourdayslater,shegotunderwayforthecoastofVietnam.OnherfirsttourintheGulfofTonkin,AllenM.Sumnerservedas"shotgun"(screeningship)forLongBeachwhilethenuclear-poweredguidedmissilecruiserservedonpositiveidentificationradaradvisoryzonedutyinthegulf.Shewasrelievedofthatassignmenton5ApriltoparticipateinOperationSeadragon,theinterdictionofcommunistwaterbornelogisticsoperations.Thatassignmentlasteduntil11April,whenshejoinedthescreenoftheaircraftcarrierHancockforavoyagetoSasebo,Japan.SheremainedatSasebofrom15to22AprilbeforeheadingbacktotheGulfofTonkinagainincompanywithHancock.UponherreturntoVietnamesewaters,AllenM.SumnermovedinshorewiththeAustraliancruiserHobarttoresume"Sea-dragon"dutyand,later,toprovideshorebombardmentsupportformarinesengagedinOperationBeauCharger,acombinedwaterborneandairborneamphibiousassaultconductednearthedemilitarizedzonelateinMay. AttheendofMay,sherejoinedthefastcarriersonYankeeStationandscreenedthemuntil10Junewhensheresumed"Seadragon"duty.HerworkclosertotheVietnamcoastlastedfor12days.On22June,shedepartedVietnamesewatersandsetacourseforKaohsiung,Taiwan,whereshevisitedfrom26Juneto2July.DepartingKaohsiungonthelatterday,AllenM.SumnercalledatHongKongfrom7to9July.On11July,shereturnedtothecoastofVietnamandbegananine-daygunfiresupportmission.LeavingVietnamesewaterson20July,thedestroyermadeasix-daystopatSubicBayinthePhilippinesfrom22to28Julybeforereturningtothegunlinefrom30Julyto1August.ShethenbeganhervoyagebacktotheUnitedStates;stoppedatYokosuka,Hawaii,andAcapulco,inMexico;transitedthePanamaCanalon7September,andreachedMayporton10September. ThedestroyerresumednormaloperationsoutofMayportinOctober.Throughout1968,shecruisedthewatersoftheWestIndies,frequentlyprovidingsupportfortheencirclednavalbaseatGuantánamoBay,Cuba.Similardutycarriedherthroughthefirstfourmonthsof1969.InMay,shevoyagedtoEnglandandnorthernEuropeanwaterstoparticipateinaNATOreviewcelebratingthe20thanniversaryofthealliance.On22May,sheheadedfortheMediterraneanandanormaltourofdutywiththe6thFleet.SheconcludedthatassignmentatMayporton10October.Following10monthsofnormaloperationsputofMayport,AllenM.SumnerembarkeduponthefinalMediterraneandeploymentofhercareeron27August1970.ThedestroyerreturnedtoMayporton28February1971andbrieflyresumednormaldutyoutofherhomeport.On1July1971,shewasreassignedtodutyasaNavalReservetrainingship.Inmid-August,shemovedtoBaltimore,Maryland,whereshebeganherNavalReservetrainingduties.Thatemploymentremainedherassignmentuntil15August1973atwhichtimeAllenM.SumnerwasdecommissionedatPhiladelphia.On16October1974,shewassoldtotheUnionMinerals&AlloyCorp.forscrapping.
