BeforeDavidDraimanjoinedDisturbed,guitaristDanDonegan,drummerMikeWengrenandbassistSteve"Fuzz"KmakwereinabandcalledBrawlwithvocalistErichAwalt.Beforechangingtheirnameto"Brawl",however,Doneganmentionedintheband'sDVD,DecadeofDisturbed,thatthenamewasoriginallygoingtobe"Crawl";theyswitcheditto"Brawl",duetothenamealreadybeingusedbyanotherband.Awaltleftthebandshortlyaftertherecordingofademotape;theotherthreemembersadvertisedforasinger.TheypostedanadvertisementinthelocalmusicpublicationinChicago,Illinois,calledthe"IllinoisEntertainer".[3]Draimanansweredtheadvertisementaftergoingtotwentyotherauditionsthatmonth.[3]GuitaristDanDonegancommentedonDraiman:"Youknow,outofallthesingersthatwehadtalkedtoorauditioned,he[Draiman]wastheonlysingerwhowasreadytogowithoriginals.Andthatimpressedme,justtoattemptthat".[3]
WithregardtoDraimanbeingthesingerfortheband,Donegansaid,"Afteraminuteortwo,hejuststartsbangingoutthesemelodiesthatwerehuge...I'mplayingmyguitarandI'mgrinningfromeartoear,tryingnottogiveitawaythatIlikethisguy,youknow,becauseIdon'twantto,youknow...[say]'Yeah,we'llgiveyouacallback.We'll,youknow,discussit.'ButIwassopsyched.Chillupmyspine.I'mlike,'Thereissomethinghere.'"AsdrummerMikeWengrencommented,"Weclickedrightoffthebat."[3]Draimanthenjoinedthebandin1996andthebandwasrenamedDisturbed.Whenaskedinaninterviewwhyhesuggestedtonametheband"Disturbed",Draimansaid,"IthadbeenanameIhavebeencontemplatingforabandforyears.Itjustseemstosymbolizeeverythingwewerefeelingatthetime.Thelevelofconformitythatpeopleareforcedintowasdisturbingtousandwewerejusttryingtopushtheenvelopeandthenamejustsortamadesense."[4]
TheSickness(1997–2000)[edit]
Afterrenamingtheband,Disturbedwentontorecordtwothree-trackdemotapes,thefirstcontainingdemosfor"TheGame","DownwiththeSickness",and"MeaningofLife",whilethesecondhaddemosfor"Want","Stupify",and"Droppin'Plates".Theartworkwascomposedoftheband'snewly-createdmascot,TheGuy.ThebandeventuallysignedwithGiantRecordsinAugust1999andopenedforMinistryatChicago'sRivieraTheatrearoundthesametime.[5]In2000,thebandreleaseditsdebutalbum,titledTheSickness,whichlaunchedthebandintostardom.Thealbumpeakedatnumber20ontheBillboard200,[6]andithassoldoverfourmillioncopiesintheUnitedStatessinceitsrelease.[7]BeforejoiningMarilynManson's2001Europeantour,bassistSteveKmakwasunabletoplaywiththebandduetoashatteredankle,causedbyfallingoutofafireescapeoutsideDisturbed'srehearsalhallinChicago.[8]Hetookthefireescapetoexitthebuildingwhiletheelevatorwasbeingusedtomovetheirequipmentdownstairs.KmakskippedtheEuropeantrekofthetour,buthedidperformwiththebandonJanuary11and12,2001atDisturbed'sshowinChicago.[8]DuringtheEuropeantour,MartyO'BrienreplacedKmakuntilhewasabletotouragain.

Disturbedcoveredthesong"MidlifeCrisis"foraFaithNoMoretributealbumthatwaseventuallyreleasedin2002.[9]However,Disturbed'scoverwasnotused,andarerecordedversionwouldlatermakeanappearanceonthecompilationalbum,TheLostChildren.[10]InSeptember2001,productionoftheirsecondstudioalbumbegan.OnJune4,2002,DisturbedreleasedadocumentaryDVDabouttheband,titledM.O.L.,whichshowedsomeoftheband'smorepersonalmomentsinthestudioandduringtours,aswellasfeaturingseveralmusicvideosandliveperformances.[11]OnSeptember17,2002,Disturbedreleasedtheirsecondstudioalbum,titledBelieve,whichdebutedatnumberoneontheBillboard200.[12]Themusicvideoforthefirstsinglefromthealbum,titled"Prayer",waspulledfrommosttelevisionstations,duetoperceivedsimilaritieswiththeSeptember11,2001attacks.[13]DavidDraimanrecordedvocalsforasongtitled"Forsaken",asongwrittenandproducedbyJonathanDavisofthebandKorn,releasedonQueenoftheDamned.[14]
In2003,thebandonceagainparticipatedintheOzzfesttourandstartedanotheroneoftheirowntours,titledMusicasaWeaponII.ThebandsChevelle,Taproot,andÜnlocotouredwiththem.[15]Duringthetour,Disturbeddebutedanunreleasedsong,titled"Dehumanized".[16]AfterDisturbedfinishedtheMusicasaWeaponIItour,SteveKmakwasfiredbythebandbecauseof"personalitydifferences".HewasreplacedbyJohnMoyer;[17][18]Moyer'slastband,theUnionUnderground,hadrecentlybecomeinactive.OnthenightMoyerbecametheband'snewbassplayer,DisturbedplayedliveattheHouseofBluesandperformedtwonewsongs,"Hell"and"Monster",bothofwhichareB-sidetracksontheband'sthirdstudioalbum,TenThousandFists.[18]
TenThousandFists(2004–2006)[edit]
Disturbed'sthirdstudioalbum,TenThousandFists,wasreleasedonSeptember20,2005.ThealbumdebutedatnumberoneontheBillboard200,whilealsosellingaround238,000copiesintheweekfollowingitsrelease.[19]Thealbumwascertifiedplatinum,shipping1,000,000units,intheUnitedStatesonJanuary5,2006.[20]Thebandtouredwith10YearsandIllNiñoinsupportofthealbum.DisturbedheadlinedOzzfest2006alongwithSystemofaDown,LacunaCoil,DragonForce,AvengedSevenfold,andHatebreed.[21]
Disturbedperformingin2005
InaninterviewwithLaunchRadioNetworks,DisturbedvocalistDavidDraimanstatedthattwentysongswererecordedforthealbum,butonlyfourteenmadeittothefinaltracklisting.[22]Theremainingsongsincluded"Hell",whichwasincludedinoneofthetwo"Stricken"singles;[23]"Monster",whichwasincludedasaniTunespre-orderbonusforTenThousandFists,[24]thenlaterincludedontheTenThousandFistsTourEdition;"TwoWorlds",whichwasalsoincludedontheTourEditionofTenThousandFists;and"Sickened",whichwasincludedinthe"LandofConfusion"single.[25]TenThousandFistsisthefirstalbumreleasedbyDisturbedtofeatureguitarsolos.Thebandstatedthattheyfeltthatguitarsolosareapartofmusicthatisabsentinalotofmodernmusic,andtheywantedtobringsomeofthatback.Songslike"Stricken","Overburdened",and"LandofConfusion"allfeatureguitarsolos,aswellasmanyothers.
In2006,aEuropeantourwasscheduledbuthadbeenmovedtwiceduetoDraimanhavingtroubleswithsevereacidreflux,whichaffectedhisvoice,[26]asrelatedbyDraimanhimself.[27]Laterthatyear,Draimanunderwentsurgeryforadeviatedseptumwhichaffectedhisvoice.[27]Itwassuccessful,andeversincethen,Draimanhaslimitedhisdrinkingontheroad.[28]Inlate2006,DisturbedheadlinedanotheroneoftheirowntoursnamedMusicasaWeaponIII;thebandsFlyleaf,StoneSour,andNonpointtouredwiththem.[29]DisturbedcompletedthefirstlegoftheirMusicasaWeaponIIItourinlate2006.[30]Soonafter,Draimanstatedthattherewasnotgoingtobeasecondlegtothetourandthatinsteadthebandwasgoingofftheroadtostartworkingontheirfourthstudioalbum.[31]

InJuly2007,anewtracktitled"ThisMoment"wasreleasedonthesoundtracktothefilmTransformers.Disturbedmixedtheirfourthstudioalbum,titledIndestructible,[32]inLosAngelesinlate2007.[33]Inanearlierinterview,DavidDraimansaidthattheyweregoingtorecordfifteensongs,butonlytwelvewouldbeonthealbum.[34]

InaninterviewinJuly2009,withFaceCulture,DraimanstatedthattheDVDwouldbe"chroniclingthepastdecadeofDisturbed'sexistence.It'smeanttoshowourgrowthoverthecourseofthedecade."Healsotalkedmoreaboutthefifthalbum:"Acoupleof[songriffs]thatDannyhascomeupwitharereallyamazing.Butthey'rejustlittlepieces...it'snotevenintwo-threepartprogression[yet]."[44]AfewmonthslateronMarch23,2010,thebandreleasedareissueoftheirdebutalbum,TheSickness,withtheB-sidetracks"GodoftheMind"and"AWelcomeBurden",updatedartwork,aswellasremasteringandremixingthetracklist.[45]Itwasalsoavailableforthefirsttimeinvinylformat.[46]OnFebruary26,2010,HarmonixannouncedasecondDisturbedpackfordownloadontheRockBandmusicstore,containingthe2010remasteredversionsof"Voices","TheGame",and"MeaningofLife".[47]
ThebandenteredthestudioinChicagoinearly2010tobeginrecordingtheirfifthalbum,planningonareleasethatsummer.GuitaristDanDoneganstatedthatthebandhadwrittenaround15–18songs.[48]ItwaslaterconfirmedthatthetitleofthealbumwouldbeAsylum.[49]ThebandreleasedacoverofheavymetalbandJudasPriest'ssong"LivingAfterMidnight"fortheMetalHammerPresents...TributetoBritishSteelalbum.OnApril20,2010,roughlytwomonthsaftertheyenteredthestudio,Disturbedannouncedthattheyhadfinishedrecordingthealbum,andwerereadytobeginmixingitinLosAngeles,California.AstheydidwiththeirlastalbumIndestructible,Disturbedstatedthattheyself-producedAsylum.[50]ThebandannouncedthatAsylumwouldbereleasedonAugust31,2010.OnJuly9,2010,thetracklistingwasrevealedontheband'sofficialwebsite.AsylumdebutedatnumberoneontheBillboard200.[51]AsylumwasDisturbed'sfourthconsecutivestudioalbumtodebutontopofthecharts,anachievementonlyearnedbytwootherbands:MetallicaandDaveMatthewsBand.[52]

Disturbedheadlinedthefirstannual"RockstarEnergyDrinkUproar"tourwithAvengedSevenfold,aswellasStoneSour,HellyeahandHalestorm,amongothersinlatesummer2010.[53]Then,inOctober2010,itwasreportedthatDavidDraimanwasdiagnosedwitha"seriousthroatcondition",andtheband'sU.S.tourhadbeencanceled,asDraiman'shealingprocesscouldhavetakenuptofourweeks.[54]Aroundtheendofthatyear,DisturbedannouncedthattheywouldbecommencingtheMusicasaWeaponVtourin2011,co-headliningwithKornandguestsSevendust,InThisMomentandStillwell.InJanuary2011,theMayhemFestivalannouncedthatDisturbedwouldbeheadliningthefestivalalongwithGodsmackandMegadeththatsummer.[55]InFebruary2011,Disturbedwasaddedtothatsummer'sDownloadFestival.[56]DisturbedannouncedthatinMay2011,theywouldbeco-headliningtheRockontheRangeFestivalinColumbus,Ohio.[57]
OnThursday,April28,DisturbedannouncedthattheirpreviouslyunreleasedbonustrackfromAsylum,titled"3",wouldbeavailablefordownloadontheirwebsite.TheysaidthatallproceedsmadefromthedownloadofthesongwouldgotowardstheDamienEcholsDefenseFund,abenefitfoundationsupportingthereleaseoftheWestMemphisThree.
InJuly2011,thebandconfirmeditwouldgoonhiatusafterfinishingtheirUStourthatyear,andinaninterviewthatsamemonth,Draimandismissedconcernsthatthehiatuswasaresultofconflictbetweenthebandmembers.[58]DisturbedwentintohiatusinOctober2011.Disturbedreleasedab-sidecompilationalbum,titledTheLostChildren,onNovember8,2011.Thesong"Hell"wasmadeavailablefordigitaldownloadonOctober11,2011,butDraimanstatedonhisTwitterpagethattherewouldnotbeamusicvideoforit.Apreviouslyunreleasedtrack,titled"Mine",alsoappearsonthealbum.ThetracklistingandreleasedatewererevealedonDraiman'sTwitterpageonSeptember20.OnApril21,2012,tocommemorateRecordStoreDay,Disturbedreleased"TheCollection".Itisaboxsetfeaturingtheband'sfivefull-lengthstudioalbumsin140 gramvinylLPs.

OnJune20,2015,onDisturbed'sFacebookpageandwebsite,therewasmaterialpostedhintingatapossiblereturnoftheband.ThewebsiteshowsanewDisturbedlogo,plusavideooftheband'smascot"TheGuy"appearingtobeonlifesupport,stillbreathing.[59]ThenewDisturbedlogowasalsopostedtotheirofficialFacebookpage,alongwiththevideooftheirmascot,andtheirprofilepicturechangedtosolidblack,indicatingnewactivitywithintheband.[60]OnJune22,2015,DisturbedpostedanothervideoonFacebook,thistimeshowingTheGuyawakeningfromlifesupport,aswellasan18-hourcountdownontheirofficialwebsite,givingspeculationtoadefinitereunion.
OnJune23,2015,DisturbedofficiallyannouncedtheendoftheirhiatusandthecomingoftheirnewalbumentitledImmortalized.Onthesameday,theofficialmusicvideoforthenewsingle"TheVengefulOne"wasreleasedontheirYouTubechannel.[61]ImmortalizedwasreleasedonAugust21,2015.JohnMoyerdidnotperformonthealbumduetoworkingonotherprojects,withallbasstracksbeingperformedbyDanDonegan.Moyerisnotintheband'svideofor"TheSoundofSilence"releasedinDecember2015.Moyerremainsabandmember,however,havingappearedinpromotionalphotographyforthealbumaswellascontinuingtoperformlivewiththeband.
Onthealbum'sreleaseday,thebandplayedtheirfirstshowinfouryearsattheHouseofBluesinChicago.Theshowfeaturedthelivedebutsoffournewsongs("TheVengefulOne","WhatAreYouWaitingFor","TheLight"andthetitletrack)andthesong"Hell",aB-sidefromTenThousandFists,initsentiretyforthefirsttime.[62]

Disturbedheadlinedthe2018RockFest,alongwithGodsmackandIncubus.ThebandannouncedviasocialmediainearlyJanuary2018thattheyhadenteredthestudiotobeginrecordingtheirnextstudioalbum.InJune2018,leadguitaristDanDoneganandbassistJohnMoyerconfirmedwithsourcesthatthenewalbumhadbeencompleted,with100%ofthesongsfinished,leavingonlymixingandmasteringtobedone.BandmembersalsopostedapictureviaInstagramtogetheratadinnerpartyincelebrationofcompletionoftherecordingprocess,theband'sfirstalbuminover3yearsandtheband'sfirstalbuminover8yearstohavebassistJohnMoyerbeinginvolvedin.
Thealbum,EvolutionwasreleasedonOctober19,2018.[69]OnAugust16,2018,theleadsingle,titled"AreYouReady"wasreleased.OnSeptember21,2018,thealbum'ssecondsingle,titled"AReasontoFight"wasreleased.[70]Insupportofthealbum,thebandannouncedthe'EvolutionWorldTour',whichtookplaceinearly2019.TheinitialdatesannouncedincludedshowsacrossNorthAmericawithselectCanadiandates,aswellasaEuropeanlegofthetour.[71]OnMarch25,2019,DisturbedannouncedamassivesummertourwithPopEvilandInThisMoment.PopEvilopenedthefirsthalfofdatesandInThisMomentopenedthesecond.[72]

Followingabreak,thebandplayeditsfirstpandemic-eraliveshows.ThefirstonewasthefirsttimeinnearlytwoyearsonSeptember25,2021,asoneoftheheadlinersoftheLouderThanLifefestivalinLouisville,Kentucky.ThebandalsoplayedearlierinNovemberattheWelcometoRockvillefestivalattheDaytonaInternationalSpeedwayinDaytonaBeach,Florida.
Draimantalkedabouttheprogressofthesongwritingsessionsfortheband'sfollow-upto2018'sEvolution:"It'soninabig,big,bigfuckingway.Itreally,reallyis.Imean,wearesogenuinelyexcited."Healsosaidthatthenewmaterialisgoingbacktotheir"meatandpotatoes",andthatitisclosetothevibeofTheSicknessandTenThousandFistsalbums.[77]DraimansaidthatthebandwantstobeginrecordingaftertheNewYearof2022,buttheyhaveyettoannounceaproducer.Thenewsongswillalsobereleasedontwoseparatemediums,asopposedtoDisturbed'susualalbumreleases.[77]
