The glycemic index or GI, is a numerical ranking that provides a good indication of how fast the body is going to digest, absorb, and metabolise carb foods. /GIScienceandLatestEmergingResearchGIScienceandLatestEmergingResearchAlowGIdietcouldbebeneficialformanagingorpreventinganumberofhealthconditions.ONTHISPAGEThescienceofGIFirstinlowGIresearchWhatisthefoodinsulinindex?ResearchActivitiesInternationalCarbohydrateQualityConsortiumFurtherreadingPRINT,DOWNLOAD,SHAREThescienceofGITheglycemicindex,orGI,wasdiscoveredinCanadain1981byProfessorDavidJenkins.Hisresearchledtothefirstpapereverpublishedontheglycemicindex,whichappearedintheAmericanJournalofClinicalNutritionthatsameyear.Aswellasprovidinganinsightintothewaycarbohydratesinfoodaffectbloodglucoselevels,GIhasalsochallengedthemyththatsugarsandsugaryfoodsareworseforbloodglucoselevelsthanstarchesandstarchyfoods.ThescienceofGIisconstantlyevolving.ScientistsarenowseeingthatalowGIdietcouldbebeneficialformanagingorpreventingotherhealthconditionssuchascognitiveperformance,skinhealth,reducingtheriskofsomecancers,improvingeyehealth,aswellasmanaginggestationaldiabetesandthesymptomsofpolycysticovarysyndrome.FirstinlowGIresearchIn1995TheSydneyUniversityGlycemicIndexResearchService(SUGiRS)wasestablishedtoprovideareliablecommercialGItestinglaboratory.Foodsamplesaretestedinhealthyvolunteersaccordingtostandardisedmethodsthathavebeenvalidatedagainstoverseaslaboratories.Testingoffoodsfortheirglycemicindex,insulinindex,satietyresponse,andothermetabolicparameterscanbeassessedsimultaneously.Otheranalysessuchasinvitrostarchdigestionassaysareavailable.SUGiRShasanestablishedreputationforquality,speedandflexibility.TheGlycemicIndexFoundationwasestablishedin2001inAustralia,withtheGISymbolprogramlaunchedin2002tohelpconsumersidentifytheGIoffoods.FoodsthatcarrytheSymbolareguaranteedtohavebeenproperlytestedbyanaccreditedlaboratoryusingtheinternationalstandardandmeetnutritionalcriteriainlinewithInternationalDietaryGuidelines–toproveitisahealthychoice.Thereisconvincingevidencefromalargebodyofresearchthatlowglycemicindex/glycemicload(GI/GL)dietsreducetheriskoftype2diabetesandcoronaryheartdisease,helpcontrolbloodglucoseinpeoplewithdiabetes,andmayalsohelpwithweightmanagement.GlycemicIndex,GlycemicLoadandGlycemicResponse:AnInternationalScientificConsensesSummitWhatisthefoodinsulinindex?TheglycemicindexorGI,isanumericalrankingthatprovidesagoodindicationofhowfastthebodyisgoingtodigest,absorb,andmetabolisecarbfoods.However,thisisnotalwaysproportionaltotheinsulinresponsetoafood.Whenourbloodglucoselevelsrise,ourpancreasreleasesinsulin(ahormone)thatdrivestheglucoseoutofourbloodstreamandintoourbody’scellswhereourbodycanuseitasanimmediatesourceofenergyorstoreitasglycogen.Somefoodsneedmoreinsulintohelputilisethem,whileotherfoodsneedmuchless.Anothermeasurethatcanbeofuseisthefoodinsulinindex(FII)whichscientistsatTheUniversityofSydneyhavebeenresearchingforalmost20years.TheFIIlooksathowmuchinsulinthebodynormallyreleasesinresponsetoawholefoodormeal–notonlyinrelationtothecarbohydratecontent,butalsothequantityandqualityoftheproteinandfatitcontains.InarecentstudyintheAmericanJournalofClinicalNutrition,UniversityofSydneyresearchersfoundthattheFIImaybeanadditionaltoolforpeoplewithtype2diabetestohelpthemreducepostprandialhyperinsulinemiaandimproveinsulinresistanceandbetacellfunction.Herearesometipstohelppeoplewithdiabetesachievethat:Balancemealswithsomecarbs,leanproteinandplentyofsaladorvegetablesasallfoodsstimulatesomeinsulinresponse.OptforlowerFIIcarbohydratessuchaspastaandnoodlesoverhigherFIIonessuchasmostwhitericesandregularcouscouswhenitcomestoputtingstarchycarbohydratesonthedinnerplate.Choosehigherfibre,lessprocessedbreadsandcereals,suchasdensegrainybreadandtraditionalporridgeoats.Snackonfruitandnon-starchyvegetablesastheyarelowFIIandpackedwithvitaminsandminerals.Chooseleancutsofredmeat,chickenorfishandteamthemwithlotsofnon-starchyvegand/orsalad.ProcessedmeatslikebaconandsausagesmayhavealowerFII,buttheirhighsaturatedfatcontentmakesthemamuchlesshealthychoice.Informationcourtesyofwww.glycemicindex.com(September2017)ResearchActivitiesTheGlycemicIndexFoundation(GIF)istheworldauthorityontheglycemicindex(GI),itshealthbenefitsandhowitcanbeusedtoguideyourfoodchoices.WedothisbyinvestinginresearchtobetterunderstandtheGlycemicIndexandassociatedhealthbenefitsoflowGIeatingandLowGLdiets.ThefollowingareresearchprojectssupportedbytheFoundation:ChangesindietaryglycemicindexandglycemicloadinAustralianadultsfrom1995to2012Australianshaveusedtheglycemicindex(GI)since1995;however,therearenodataonchangesincarbohydratequalityovertime.TheaimofthestudywastocompareaveragedietaryGIandglycemicload(GL),andcontributingcarbohydratefoods,inthetwomostrecentnationaldietarysurveys.AlthoughtheaveragedietaryGIandGLdeclinedbetween1995and,trendsinspecificcarbohydratefoodssuggestthatAustraliansareavoidingpotatoesandsugarybeveragesinfavourofagreatervarietyofcarbohydratefoods,particularlycerealproducts.VIEWSTUDYStudy:Low-GIdietlowersbloodglucoseindiabetesPeoplewithtype1ortype2diabeteswhofollowedalow-glycemicdiethadasmallyetclinicallymeaningfulreductioninbloodglucoselevels,aswellasreductionsinfastingglucose,b
