Coleman*ab   Authoraffiliations * Correspondingauthors a CRANN&AMBER,TrinityCollegeDublin,Dublin2,Ireland E-mail: [email protected] b SchoolofPhysics,TrinityCollegeDublin,Dublin2,Ireland c SchoolofChemistry,TrinityCollegeDublin,Dublin2,Ireland Abstract HerewedemonstratethatliquidphaseexfoliationcanbeusedtoconvertlayeredcrystalsofnickelhydroxideintoNi(OH)2nanosheetsinrelativelylargequantitiesandwithouttheneedforionintercalation.Whileotherproceduresrequireharshsynthesisconditionsandmultiplereactionsteps,thismethodinvolvesultrasonicationofcommerciallyavailablepowdersinaqueoussurfactantsolutionsandsoisrelativelymildandpotentiallyscalable.SuchmildexfoliationispossiblebecausethesurfaceenergyofNi(OH)2,asmeasuredbyinversegaschromatography,isrelativelylowat∼70mJm−2,similartootherlayeredmaterials.TEM,AFM,XPSandRamanspectroscopyshowtheexfoliatednanosheetstoberelativelythin(mean∼10monolayersthick)andofgoodquality.Sizeselectionbyliquidcascadecentrifugationallowedtheproductionofsampleswithmeannanosheetlengthsrangingfrom55to195nm.Opticalmeasurementsondispersionsshowedtheopticalabsorptioncoefficientspectratoberelativelyinvariantwithnanosheetsizewhilethescatteringcoefficientspectravariedstronglywithsize.Theresultantsize-dependenceallowstheextinctionspectratobeusedtoestimatenanosheetsizeaswellasconcentration.Weusedtheexfoliatednanosheetstopreparethinfilmelectrodesforuseinsupercapacitorsandasoxygenevolutioncatalysts.Whiletheresultantcapacitancewasreasonablyhighat∼1200Fcm−3(20mVs−1),thecatalyticperformancewasexceptionalwithcurrentsof10mAcm−2observedatoverpotentialsaslowas297mV,closetothestateoftheart.
