Contents 1History 2Modelhistory 2.1Specifications 3Convertibleconversions 3.1Crayford 4References History[edit] TheFiestawasoriginallydevelopedundertheprojectname"Bobcat"(nottobeconfusedwiththesubsequentrebadgedMercuryvariantoftheFordPinto)andapprovedfordevelopmentbyHenryFordIIinSeptember1972.[1]DevelopmenttargetsindicatedaproductioncostUS$100lessthanthecurrentEscort.[2]ThecarwastohaveawheelbaselongerthanthatoftheFiat127(althoughshorterthansomeotherrivals,likethePeugeot104,Renault5andVolkswagenPolo),[3]butwithanoveralllengthshorterthanthatoftheEscort.ThefinalproposalwasdevelopedbyTomTjaardaatGhia.[3]TheprojectwasapprovedforproductioninDecember1973,withFord'sengineeringcentresinCologneandDunton(Essex)collaborating.[3] Fordestimatedthat500,000Fiestasayearwouldbeproduced,andbuiltanall-newfactorynearValencia,Spain;atrans-axlefactorynearBordeaux,France;factoryextensionsfortheassemblyplantsinDagenham,UK.FinalassemblyalsotookplaceinValencia.[4] ThenameFiestabelongedtoGeneralMotorswhenthecarwasdesigned,astheyhadusedthenamefortheOldsmobileFiestainthe1950s;however,itwasfreelygivenforFordtouseontheirnewsupermini.[3]Ford'smarketingteamhadpreferredthenameBravo,butHenryFordIIvetoeditinfavouroftheFiestaname.[3]ThemotoringpresshadbegunspeculatingabouttheexistenceoftheBobcatprojectsince1973,butitwasnotuntilDecember1975thatFordofficiallyannounceditastheFiesta.[3]AFiestawasondisplayatthe24HoursofLeMansinJune1976,andafewrallys.Mechanically,theFiestaadoptedthenowindustry-standardmechanicallayoutpioneeredbyFiatwithatransversemountedenginecoupledtoanend-onfour-speedmanualtransmissionoftheFordBC-Serieswithunequallengthdriveshafts.Thepowerunitwouldbeanew"shortblock"versionofthevenerableFordKentOHVengine,dubbed"Valencia"afterthebrandnewSpanishfactoryinAlmussafes,Valencia,developedespeciallytoproducethenewcar.Ford'splantsinDagenham,England,andSaarlouisandCologne(from1979)inGermany,alsomanufacturedFiestas.Tocutcostsandspeeduptheresearchanddevelopment,thenewpowertrainpackagedestinedfortheFiestawastestedinFiat127development"mules".[3]Unlikeseveralrivals,whichusedtorsionbarsintheirsuspension,theFiestausedcoilsprings.[3]ThefrontsuspensionwasofFord'stypical"trackcontrolarm"arrangement,whereMacPhersonstrutswerecombinedwithlowercontrolarmsandlongitudinalcompressionlinks.[3]Thestandardrearsuspensionusedabeamaxle,trailinglinksandaPanhardrod,whilstananti-rollbarwasincludedinthesportspackage.[3]AllMk1Fiestasfeatured12-inchwheelsasstandard,withdiscbrakesatthefrontanddrumbrakesattherear.[3]Fordpaidparticularattentioneaseofservice,andpublishedthetimesrequiredtoreplacevariouscommonparts.[5] Modelhistory[edit] AlthoughnotthefirstFordvehicletofeaturefront-wheeldrive(the1960sTaunus12MproducedbyFordofGermanylaidclaimtothattitle),theFiestaiswidelycreditedasbeingFord'sfirstgloballysuccessfulfront-wheel-drivemodel,andwasthefirstfront-wheeldriveFordcartofeatureatransverseenginelayout.TheFiestawasofficiallylaunchedintheUKonFebruary2,1977,whereitwasavailablefrom£1,856forthebasic950 cc-enginedmodel.[6] ItwasonlythesecondhatchbacksuperminitohavebeenbuiltintheUKatthisstage,beinglaunchedayearaftertheVauxhallChevette,butnearlyayearbeforethelaunchoftheChryslerSunbeamandfouryearsbeforetheAustinMetro.ThemillionthFiestawasproducedin1979.[1] FordFiestaXR2 ThecarwasinitiallyavailableinEuropewiththeValencia957 cc(58.4 cu in)I4(highcompressionandlowcompressionoptions),and1,117 cc(68.2 cu in)enginesandinBase,Popular,L,GL(1978onward),GhiaandStrim,aswellasavan.TheU.S.MarkIFiestawasbuiltinSaarlouisandCologne,Germanybuttoslightlydifferentspecifications;U.S.modelswereBase,Decor,Sport,andGhia,theGhiahavingthehighestleveloftrim.[7]ThesetrimlevelschangedverylittleintheFiesta'sthree-yearrunintheUS,from1977to1980.AllU.S.modelsfeaturedthemorepowerful1,596 cc(97.4 cu in)engine,whichwastheolder"Crossflow"versionoftheKentengine.AmongtheotherchangesrequiredfortheUSmarket,theFiestawasfittedwithacatalyticconverterandairpumptosatisfystrictCalifornianemissionregulations),energy-absorbingbumpers,side-markerlamps,roundsealed-beamheadlamps,improvedcrashdynamicsandfuelsystemintegrityaswellasoptionalairconditioning(a/cwasnotavailableinEurope).IntheU.S.market,theFordEscortreplacedboththeFiestaandthecompactPintoin1981. AtthebeginningoftheBritishgovernment'sMotabilityschemefordisabledmotoristsin1978,theFiestawasoneofthekeycarstobeavailableonthescheme.[8] Asportingderivative(1.3LSupersport)wasofferedinEuropeforthe1980modelyear,usingthe1.3 L(79 cu in)KentCrossflowengine,effectivelytotestthemarketforthesimilarXR2introducedayearlater,whichfeatureda1.6Lversionofthesameengine.Blackplastictrimwasaddedtotheexteriorandinterior.Thesmallsquareheadlightswerereplacedwithlargercircularonesresultinginthefrontindicatorsbeingmovedintothebumpertoaccommodatethechange.Withaquotedperformanceof0–60 mph(0–97 km/h)in9.3secondsand105 mph(169 km/h)topspeed,theXR2hothatchbecameacultcarbelovedofboyracersthroughoutthe1980s. Forthe1979autoshowseason,FordinconjunctionwithitsGhiaOperationsinTurin,Italy,producedtheFordFiestaTuaregoff-roadcar.Itwastoutedinpressmaterialsas"aconceptvehicledesignedandequippedforpractical,off-roadrecreationaluse."[9] Minorrevisionsappearedacrosstherangeinlate1981,withlargerbumperstomeetcrashworthinessregulationsandothersmallimprovementsinabidtomaintainshowroomappealaheadoftheforthcomingsecondgeneration. Itwaswell-receivedonmostEuropeanmarkets,particularlytheUnitedKingdom,whereitwastheninthbestsellingcarinitsfirstyear,andby1981itwasthethirdbestseller.However,in1982itwasoutsoldbyBL'snewAustinMetro,andwithahostofnewsuperminisbeinglaunchedacrossEuropebetweenSeptember1982andJune1983,FordwaskeentoupdatetheFiestainordertokeepitcompetitivewithitsrivals.
