Standards//LearningCommunities LearningCommunities Professionallearningthatincreaseseducatoreffectivenessandresultsforallstudentsoccurswithinlearningcommunitiescommittedtocontinuousimprovement,collectiveresponsibility,andgoalalignment. Professionallearningwithincommunitiesrequirescontinuousimprovement,promotescollectiveresponsibility,andsupportsalignmentofindividual,team,school,andschoolsystemgoals.Learningcommunitiesconveneregularlyandfrequentlyduringtheworkdaytoengageincollaborativeprofessionallearningtostrengthentheirpracticeandincreasestudentresults.Learningcommunitymembersareaccountabletooneanothertoachievethesharedgoalsoftheschoolandschoolsystemandworkintransparent,authenticsettingsthatsupporttheirimprovement. Collectiveparticipationadvancesthegoalsofawholeschoolorteamaswellasthoseofindividuals.Communitiesofcaring,analytic,reflective,andinquiringeducatorscollaboratetolearnwhatisnecessarytoincreasestudentlearning.Withinlearningcommunities,membersexchangefeedbackabouttheirpracticewithoneanother,visiteachother'sclassroomsorworksettings,andshareresources.Learningcommunitymembersstrivetorefinetheircollaboration,communication,andrelationshipskillstoworkwithinandacrossbothinternalandexternalsystemstosupportstudentlearning.Theydevelopnormsofcollaborationandrelationaltrustandemployprocessesandstructuresthatunleashexpertiseandstrengthencapacitytoanalyze,plan,implement,support,andevaluatetheirpractice. Whilesomeprofessionallearningoccursindividually,particularlytoaddressindividualdevelopmentgoals,themoreoneeducator'slearningissharedandsupportedbyothers,themorequicklythecultureofcontinuousimprovement,collectiveresponsibility,andhighexpectationsforstudentsandeducatorsgrows.Collectiveresponsibilityandparticipationfosterpeer-to-peersupportforlearningandmaintainaconsistentfocusonsharedgoalswithinandacrosscommunities.Technologyfacilitatesandexpandscommunityinteraction,learning,resourcearchivingandsharing,andknowledgeconstructionandsharing.Someeducatorsmaymeetwithpeersvirtuallyinlocalorglobalcommunitiestofocusonindividual,team,school,orschoolsystemimprovementgoals.Oftensupportedthroughtechnology,cross-communitycommunicationwithinschools,acrossschools,andamongschoolsystemsreinforcessharedgoals,promotesknowledgeconstructionandsharing,strengthenscoherence,tapseducators'expertise,andincreasesaccesstoanduseofresources. Communitiesoflearnersmaybevarioussizes,includememberswithsimilarordifferentrolesorresponsibilities,andmeetfrequentlyface-to-face,virtually,orthroughacombination.Educatorsmaybemembersofmultiplelearningcommunities.Somecommunitiesmayincludememberswhosharecommonstudents,areasofresponsibility,roles,interests,orgoals.Learningcommunitiestapinternalandexternalexpertiseandresourcestostrengthenpracticeandstudentlearning.Becausetheeducationsystemreachesouttoincludestudents,theirfamilies,communitymembers,theeducationworkforce,andpublicofficialswhoshareresponsibilityforstudentachievement,somelearningcommunitiesmayincluderepresentativesofthesegroups. Createalignmentandaccountability Professionallearningthatoccurswithinlearningcommunitiesprovidesanongoingsystemofsupportforcontinuousimprovementandimplementationofschoolandsystemwideinitiatives.Toavoidfragmentationamonglearningcommunitiesandtostrengthentheircontributiontoschoolandsystemgoals,publicofficialsandschoolsystemleaderscreatepoliciesthatestablishformalaccountabilityforresultsalongwiththesupportneededtoachieveresults.Tobeeffective,thesepoliciesandsupportsalignwithanexplicitvisionandgoalsforsuccessfullearningcommunities.Learningcommunitiesaligntheirgoalswiththoseoftheschoolandschoolsystem,engageincontinuousprofessionallearning,andholdallmemberscollectivelyaccountableforresults. Theprofessionallearningthatoccurswithinlearningcommunitiesbothsupportsandissupportedbypolicyandgovernance,curriculumandinstruction,humanresources,andotherfunctionswithinaschoolsystem.Learningcommunitiesbridgetheknowing-doinggapbytransformingmacro-levellearning--knowledgeandskilldevelopment--intomicro-levellearning--thepracticesandrefinementsnecessaryforfullimplementationintheclassroomorworkplace.Whenprofessionallearningoccurswithinasystemdrivenbyhighexpectations,sharedgoals,professionalism,andpeeraccountability,theoutcomeisdeepchangeforindividualsandsystems.
