2004.AnotherBookerPrizeWinnerIlikedbutcouldn'tlove.Anotheryearwhenthewinnerwaslessimpressivethanthoseitbeat.Andnowitis2011andAlanHollinghurst'snewbookTheStranger'sChildhasbeenlonglistedforthisyear'sprizeandalreadyhe'sthebookmakers'picktowin.Heprobablywill,andmaybethistimehe'lldeserveit.That'snotfairofme,though.It'snotlikeTheLineofBeautywasabadbook.Ienjoyeditwellenough.Thecharacterswereengaging(IespeciallylikedCatherine).HollinghurstwasfairlyhonestabouthisdebttoEvelynWaughandothers.Itdealtwithoneofmyfavouritethemes--homosexuality--inanhonestandwelcomingmannerwithminimumnostalgia.AndIamalwaysasuckerfortheeighties,havingbeenateenmyselfatthetime.Butevenwithallofthosepositives,TheLineofBeautynevertranscendedthebetterthanaverageforme.IhadtroublecaringabouttheFeddens(exceptCatherine),andIdidn'tgiveadamnabouttheirtroubles.IspentmuchofthetimewishingIwasrereadingBridesheadRevisited--anotherbook,oddlyenough,thatIfindonlybetterthanaverage(thereismuchbetterWaughtoread)--andwonderingwhotheBBCwasgoingtocastwhentheygotaroundtomakingthebook(whichtheydid,asIknewtheywould).Butworstofall,IneverreallylikedNick.Ifoundhimpathetic,tobehonest,andeventhoughIfeltthatHollinghurstpurposelypresentedhimasunsympathetic,Icouldn'tmakemyselfgoalongfortheride.Ohwell,evenifIcouldn'tloveit,Ididlikeit.Irecommendittoanyonewholikesqualitywriting,genderstudies,booksabouttheEnglishuppercrust,oraliteraryqualitybeachread.Still,IhopeHollinghurst'snewoneisbetter.Hisreputationhas,sofar,eclipsedhisoutput--atleastforme.
