TheColosseum,ortheColiseum,originallytheFlavianAmphitheatre(Latin:AmphitheatrumFlavium,ItalianAnfiteatroFlavioorColosseo),isanellipticalamphitheatreinthecentreofthecityofRome,Italy,thelargesteverbuiltintheRomanEmpire.ItisconsideredoneofthegreatestworksofRomanarchitectureandRomanengineering. OccupyingasitejusteastoftheRomanForum,itsconstructionstartedin72AD[1]undertheemperorVespasianandwascompletedin80ADunderTitus,[2]withfurthermodificationsbeingmadeduringDomitian'sreign(81–96).[3]Thename"AmphitheatrumFlavium"derivesfrombothVespasian'sandTitus'sfamilyname(Flavius,fromthegensFlavia). Capableofseating50,000spectators,theColosseumwasusedforgladiatorialcontestsandpublicspectaclessuchasmockseabattles,animalhunts,executions,re-enactmentsoffamousbattles,anddramasbasedonClassicalmythology.Thebuildingceasedtobeusedforentertainmentintheearlymedievalera.Itwaslaterreusedforsuchpurposesashousing,workshops,quartersforareligiousorder,afortress,aquarry,andaChristianshrine. Althoughinthe21stcenturyitstayspartiallyruinedbecauseofdamagecausedbydevastatingearthquakesandstone-robbers,theColosseumisaniconicsymbolofImperialRome.ItisoneofRome'smostpopulartouristattractionsandstillhascloseconnectionswiththeRomanCatholicChurch,aseachGoodFridaythePopeleadsatorchlit"WayoftheCross"processionthatstartsintheareaaroundtheColosseum. TheColosseumisalsodepictedontheItalianversionofthefive-centeurocoin.| TheColosseumtodayisnowamajortouristattractioninRomewiththousandsoftouristseachyearpayingtoviewtheinteriorarena,thoughentranceforEUcitizensispartiallysubsidised,andunder-18andover-65EUcitizens'entrancesarefree.ThereisnowamuseumdedicatedtoEroslocatedintheupperflooroftheouterwallofthebuilding.Partofthearenafloorhasbeenre-floored.BeneaththeColosseum,anetworkofsubterraneanpassagewaysonceusedtotransportwildanimalsandgladiatorstothearenaopenedtothepublicinsummer2010.
