Inelectricaldevices,unintentionalshortcircuitsareusuallycausedwhenawire'sinsulationbreaksdown,orwhenanotherconductingmaterialisintroduced,allowingchargetoflowalongadifferentpaththantheoneintended. Inmainscircuits,shortcircuitsmayoccurbetweentwophases,betweenaphaseandneutralorbetweenaphaseandearth(ground).Suchshortcircuitsarelikelytoresultinaveryhighcurrentandthereforequicklytriggeranovercurrentprotectiondevice.However,itispossibleforshortcircuitstoarisebetweenneutralandearthconductorsandbetweentwoconductorsofthesamephase.Suchshortcircuitscanbedangerous,particularlyastheymaynotimmediatelyresultinalargecurrentandarethereforelesslikelytobedetected.Possibleeffectsincludeunexpectedenergisationofacircuitpresumedtobeisolated.Tohelpreducethenegativeeffectsofshortcircuits,powerdistributiontransformersaredeliberatelydesignedtohaveacertainamountofleakagereactance.Theleakagereactance(usuallyabout5to10%ofthefullloadimpedance)helpslimitboththemagnitudeandrateofriseofthefaultcurrent.
