Sometimeswedon’tappreciateamoviethewayitdeservesthefirsttimeweviewit.ThatiscaseformewithSergioLeone’sgangstermasterpiece,ONCEUPONATIMEINAMERICA,afilmIwasintroducedtoonnetworkTVafewyearsafterithadadisastrousruninthetheaters;thattheatricalversionhadbeenbadlyeditedandtruncatedbyWarnerBrothersafterLeonehaddeliveredacutrunningmorethanfourhours.TheversionIsawonTVhadmanyscenesrestored,butthenonlinearwaythestoryunfolded,alongwithLeone’sverydeliberatepacewithstorytellingsimplydidnotworkwithcommercialbreakseverytenminutes,nottomentiontheeditingofcontenttofitnetworkstandards.AsfarasIwasconcerned,theenergyandverveofTHEGOOD,THEBAD,&THEUGLYandONCEUPONATIMEINTHEWESTseemedtobemissingfromwhatshouldhavebeensurething;thiswasSergioLeone,andhewasmakingamovieaboutAmericangangsters,howcoulditmiss?AsfarasIwasconcerned,hehad,butthenIlistenedtopodcastsextollingthegloriesofafilmthatmanycinephilesconsiderthegreatestgangstermovieevermade,soIforkedoverthemoneyforthetwodisc,BluRayset,andsawwithneweyesSergioLeone’sfinalmasterpiece,andhispartinggifttomillionsoffilmlovers.BasedonanovelbyHershelGoldberg,JewishgangsterwholaterwentunderthenameofHarryGrey,LeoneadaptedthebookintoanepicthatstretchesfromtheNewYorkCityatthedawnofProhibitionto1968,andfollowsasetofcharactersthroughtheirriseintheAmericanunderworldatthebeginningsoforganizedcrimetoafinalreckoningdecadeslater.Itisastoryoflove,friendship,ambition,loss,regret,andthepricethatthepassageoftimeexacts.AtthecenterofitallisNoodlesAaronsonandMaxBercovicz,boyswho,alongwiththeirimmediatecircleoffriends,findawayoutofthepovertyofthestreetsbyworkingforthegangstersyndicateswhoreallyrulethestreets.Theylearnearlythepowerofviolence,thenecessitytobeutterlyruthless,andtoenjoytherichesthatcometheirway.ThoughNoodlesandMaxhaveabondstrongerthanmostbrothers,theyarenotalike;Noodlesisultimatelycontenttobenothingmorethanastreetgangster,makingalivingfrombootleggingandpettycrime,whileMaxseesbeyondthestreetsandProhibition,andtothepossibilitiesofmergingorganizedcrimewithorganizedlaborandbigbusiness.Noodleswantsnothingtodowithit,andthisbecomesthedynamicthatdrivesthestory,afriendshipbrokenbybetrayal,butbetrayalbywhom?Things,andevents,arenotastheyfirstappear.ThatLeonedoesnottellthistaleinalinearfashioncanbeoffputtingtosome,andthisbecomesaprobleminthefirsthalfhour,whentheactionswitchesfromtheearly30’sto1968inasinglequickcut,thisplusthefactthatwearedroppedintothestoryrightinthemiddleasagroupofgunmenhuntdownNoodlesinasaloonandanopiumdeninordertogetpaybackforturningsomeunknownpersonsintothepolice–wedon’tknowyetwhohasbeensoldout.Thiscertainlycangivemanyviewersasenseofwhiplash,asthenarrativeswitchesgearswithnowarning.Leonedoesthisagainmultipletimes,andwhatmightbeonedirector’sbrilliance,caneasilybeafan’sannoyance.Onehastogetwiththerhythmofthefilm,butitiswellworththeeffort.Forme,themovierightsitselfwhentheactionshiftstotheearly20’s,andwegetalong,uninterruptedsequencewherewelearnhowNoodles,MaxandtherestoftheirgangcametogetheronthestreetsofNewYork.Notonlyistherecreationof20’sNYCindetailamasterfulpieceofmoviemaking,buttheyoungactors,especiallyScottShutzmanTilerandRustyJacobsasNoodlesandMaxrespectively,aresowinningandexpressive,andtheirstorysocompelling,thatIwouldhavebeenperfectlysatisfiedwithawholemoviejustcenteredonthem.Thispartofthefilmisfilledwithiconicimages,suchasthetrulybeautifulyoungJenniferConnelly,asDeborah,practicingballetinthebackroomwhileNoodleswatchesthroughapeephole,orthewholegang(flushwithillegallyearnedmoney)intheirbestnewsuitswalkingacrossthestreetwiththeBrooklynBridgeinthebackground–thisissomeofthefinestfilmmakingLeoneeverdid,andamongthefinestanyonewouldeverdo.Leoneassembledatrulymagnificentcast,startingwithRobertDeNiroandJamesWoodsashisleadcharacters.WatchingthisfilmnowistoberemindedofthegreatnessoftheyoungDeNirobeforetheactor’smannerismsbecamesofamiliarandparodied,sometimesbyDeNirohimself.Nobodycouldsaymorewithoutdialogthanhim–theglance,theshrug,thewaryeyes–andLeonetookfulladvantageofDeNiro’stalentstocreateinNoodlesamanwhooftenneversaidwhathewasthinking,butwhomyoualwaysknewwherehestood.MaxmightbeJamesWoods’bestperformance,acrafty,fasttalkingstreetsmartguywithambitionshekeepswellhiddenuntilthetimeisright.BothDeNiroandWoodshavemanygreatscenestogether,buttheirfinalconfrontation,isforme,thebest,whereNoodlestakeshisrevenge,onlyit’snottherevengeMaxwantsandexpects,aperfectexampleofsubvertingexpectationsandgoingsomeplacebetter.AndthisistheoneLeonemoviewheremultiplewomenplayprominentpartsinthestory,startingwithElisabethMcGovernastheolderDeborah,theloveofNoodles’lifeandthewomanhecouldnotwin.ThenthereisTuesdayWeld’sCarol,amasochisticdamewhoknowshowtomaneuverherwayaroundinthegangster’sworld.Inthecourseofthestory,bothofthesewomenarerapedingraphicscenesthatmightbeupsettingtosome,andsurelynofilmmakertodaywouldpresenttheminsuchaway,butIthinktheyareintherebecauseLeonewantedtomakeitplainthatNoodles,Max,andtherest,werenotniceguysnomatterhowmuchwemightcometoempathizewiththem,toletusknowthatthesearemenwhowilltakewhattheywant.BurtYoung,JoePesci,TreatWilliams,andRichardBrightappearalsoinsmallpartsthatfitthemlikegloves.ThetoweringMarioBraga,whowasinLeone’swesterns,hasasmallpart.AscenewithLouiseFletcherastheadministratorofacemeterywascutandthenrestoredontheBluRay.OnlyLeonecouldcomeupwiththesequencewithDannyAielloasacorruptpolicechiefwhoisbroughtintolinebythegangthroughhisnewbornson,it’slikenothingyouwillseeinanyothermovie,thekindofuniquetouchthatIlovedaboutLeone’sfilms.AndIwillsay,thisisonemoviewheretheygottheagingmakeupjustright,somethingotherfilmsscrewupmoretimesthannot–seeJamesDeaninGIANT.AndwhatwouldanySergioLeonemoviebewithoutEnnioMorricone’smusic,themanwhomadethethemesfromTHEGOOD,THEBAD,&THEUGLYandONCEUPONATIMEINTHEWESTplayendlesslyinourheads.Morricone’smusicisasmuchacharacterinthefilmasanyoneplayedbyanactor.WhoelsewoulduseZamfir’spanfluteinvoketheNYCstreetsofthedistantpast,whiletheotherthemesMorriconeusesunderlinesthesadnessandthelongingofNoodles,bothinhisprime,andtheninlateryears.MorriconeandLeonewereoneofthegreatcollaborationsinthehistoryofcinema,andIlovetheformer’smusichereasmuchasanyoftheworkhedidforLeone’swesterns.Ofcourse,thetruestarofONCEUPONATIMEINAMERICAisSergioLeonehimself,hishandisplainineveryscene;everylineofdialoguebareshisstamp.IamsurealotoffansexpectedhisgangsterepictobeTheManWithNoNamewithaTommyGun,butthatisnotthecase,forthisisaverypersonalfilm,onesuffusedwithloveforanidealizedAmerica,onethatmeantsomethingtoayoungItaliangrowingupunderMussolini.Somuchaboutthismovieisunique,likenothingtobefoundinanyothergangsterepic.ThewayLeoneframeshisshots,thedeliberatepacewithwhichthestoryunfolds,theperioddetail,theediting,thecloseupsandthejumpcuts,thehauntinguseofaninstrumentalversionofTheBeatles’“Yesterday,”allcometogethertomakeanearperfectwhole.Thereismuchthatisunstated,muchthattheaudiencehastofillinforthemselves,suchasNoodles’lifebetweentheearly30’sand1968,orthescenesthatlinger,theonesthatletsomebusinessplayoutandtellastorywithinastoryalltheirown,likewhentheveryyoungBrianBloomcan’thelphimselfandeatsthesweetonthestairstepshehasboughtforawhorewhilewaitingtotradeitforsex.IthinkLeonedidnotintendforhisgangsterfilmtobetakenashistoricallyaccuratethesamewayhiswesternscouldneverbe.NoodlesandMax,andalltherest,arelargerthanlife,theymayberootedinhistorythesamewayBlondie,AngelEyes,Taco,Frank,Cheyenne,HarmonicaandJillMcCainare,butlikehiswesterncharacters,Leone’sgangsters,andallwhoinhabittheirworld,arereallymythslikeHerculesandJasonandhisArgonauts,onesthatliveapartfromtheworldofmeremortals.ThismoviewasLeone’slaboroflove,onehespentmorethan15yearsgettingtothescreen;reportedly,heturneddownTHEGODFATHERbecausehewantedtomakehisowngangsterepic.WhydidLeone’sfilmfail?Sadly,Ithinkhewaitedtoolong,ifONCEUPONATIMEINAMERICAhadopenedin1976,Ithinkitwouldhavefoundanaudience,beenahit,andmighthavesnaggeditsdirectoranOscarnomination.Insteaditopenedinthesummerof1984,aweekafterINDIANAJONESANDTHETEMPLEOFDOOMcameout,andaweekbeforeGREMLINShittheaters.Therewasnoway80’smoviegoersweregoingtositstillforagangsterepicinthisstyle,andthoughLeone’snamemighthavebeeniconic,hehadn’thadaboxofficehitinAmericasince1968,whenTHEGOOD,THEBAD,&THEUGLYopened.Hewasnolongerrelevantorcontemporary.Thefailureofamoviehehadputsomuchinto,anddevotedsomuchtimeintogettingmade,tookitstoll;hediedmuchtoosoonfiveyearslater.Intheend,LeonesaidfarewellwiththeenigmaticendingofONCEUPONATIMEINAMERICA:themysteryofthegarbagetruck,thetaillightsfadingintothedark,andtheemergencefromitoftheoldcarsfilledhappyrevelerscelebratingtheendofprohibitiontothestrainsofKateSmithsinging“GodBlessAmerica”beforetheyareswallowedupagainbythedarknesslikearecedingmemory.ThenthereisthefinalflashbacktotheyoungerNoodlesintheopiumden,withitsimplicationthatithasallbeennothingmorethanadopefueleddream.ButIrejectthat,IthinkthatfinalimageofDeNero,withablissfulsmileonhisface,isreallythesmileofSergioLeone,thesmileofamanwhohasseenhiswildestdreamscometrue.
