History[edit] AftershakedownoffCuba,GearingreachedNorfolk22July1945andtrainedprecommissioningcrewsforotherdestroyersuntilputtinginatCascoBay,Maine,5October.GearingputinatPensacola,Florida,4NovembertoscreentheaircraftcarrierRangerduringcarrierqualificationoperations. ReturningtoNorfolk21March1946,sheconductedpeacetimeoperationsalongtheAtlanticcoastofNorthandSouthAmerica,intheCaribbean,visitingMontevideo,Uruguay;andRiodeJaneiro,Brazil.Gearingsailed10November1947onherfirstMediterraneancruise,[3]callingatAlgeria,Malta,Italy,andFrancebeforemooringagainatNorfolk11March1948. PeacetimeoperationsalongtheeasternseaboardandintheCaribbeanpreparedherforasecondcruisetoEuropeanwaters;thedestroyervisitedmostofthenationswashedbytheMediterraneanfrom10November1947to11March1948andduplicatedthislongvoyagefrom4Januaryto23May1949. Duringthefallof1949GearingtookpartinOperationFrostbite,anArcticcruisetestanddevelopmentofcoldweathertechniquesandequipment.ShecontinuedoperationsofftheeastcoastoftheUnitedStatesandintheCaribbeanthrough1950.Anothervoyagefrom10Januaryto17May1951broughtherfromNorfolktotheMediterraneanandreturn;theremainderoftheyearwasoccupiedbytrainingcruisesasfarnorthasHalifaxandsouthtoCubanwaters. BynowGearinghadestablishedthepatternofpeacetimeoperationsshefollowedwellintothe1960s:"Med"cruisesusuallyonceayear,andexerciseintheAtlanticandCaribbean.Thesekeptherinfightingtrimfortheceaselessdutiesofseapower.ShealsotookpartinnegotiationsduringtheSantaMariahijacking,andwasmodernizedandoverhauledlate1961throughearly1962atBoston. GearingafterherFRAMImodernisation,in1967. InOctober1962[4]GearingtookpartintheAmericannavalblockadeofCubainresponsetoCubanMissileCrisis,thebasingofSovietballisticmissilesonthatisland,andwasthefirsttointerceptaSovietvessel.[2]Afterdiplomaticnegotiationsendedthiscrisis,GearingreturnedtoNorfolkon1November1962.Throughtheremainderof1962shecontinuedoperationsintheAtlantic. AfterparticipatinginOperation"Springboard-63"earlyin1963,GearingsailedfortheMediterraneaninMarchservingwiththe6thFleetduringthesummer.ShereturnedtoNewportinSeptemberfora"FRAMI"overhaul.FollowingoperationsintheCaribbeanandNorthAtlanticinthespringandsummerof1964,GearingenteredtheMediterraneanon4Octobertorejointhe6thFleet.Afterreturninghomeearlyin1965,shecontinuedoperatingintheAtlanticFleetinto1967.
