它们可能最后于纪元前15500年在伊斯帕尼奥拉岛及古巴灭绝[1]，但在大陆上很早就已经消失了。

在美国已发现有四个地懒物种，包括有哈伦氏副磨齿兽、杰氏巨爪地懒、泛美地懒（英语：Eremotheriumlaurillardi）及沙塔氏孽子兽（英语：Nothrotheriopsshastensis）。

这四个物种都是大型动物，有大的爪及相信是草食性的。

地懒包含6个科，即Rathymotheriidae、Scelidotheriidae、磨齿兽科、Orophodontidae、二趾树懒科及大地懒科。

[2]地懒并没有形成单系群，一些地懒与现今的树懒甚至较其他的地懒更为接近。

拉布雷亚沥青坑的发现[编辑] 在拉布雷亚沥青坑中发现了地懒的两个物种，即哈伦氏副磨齿兽及沙塔氏孽子兽。

哈伦氏副磨齿兽当站立时可以有6呎高。

在拉布雷亚沥青坑中最普遍的副磨齿兽化石是皮上小骨，即一些细小及呈长方球形的骨头。

这些骨头是在颈部、肩膀及背部嵌在皮肤中，可能是用作防御猎食者。

另外一种的沙塔氏孽子兽身型较细小，且在拉布雷亚沥青坑中亦较为罕见。
