BayEastGardenprovidesvisitorswithanunobstructedviewofthecityskyline.UpcomingdevelopmentsofBayEastGardenwillbebasedonthethemeofwater. In2018,BayEastGardenwasdesignatedasthefuturesiteoftheFounders'Memorial.[7] BaySouthGarden[edit] BaySouthGardenopenedtothepublicon29June2012.[8]Itisthelargestofthethreegardensat54hectares(130acres)anddesignedtoshowthebestoftropicalhorticultureandgardenartistry.[9] TheoverallconceptofitsmasterplanbyGrantAssociatesdrawsinspirationfromanorchidasitisrepresentativeofthetropicsandofSingapore,beingthecountry'snationalflower,theVanda'MissJoaquim'.Theorchidtakesrootatthewaterfront(conservatories),whiletheleaves(landforms),shoots(paths,roadsandlinkways)andsecondaryroots(water,energyandcommunicationlines)thenformanintegratednetworkwithblooms(themegardensandSupertrees)atkeyintersections. The"CloudMountain"itselfisanintricatestructurecompletelycladinepiphytessuchasorchids,ferns,peacockferns,spike-andclubmosses,bromeliadsandanthuriums.ThedesignbyGrantAssociateswasinspiredbytheMaidenHairFungusandconsistsofanumberoflevels,eachwithadifferenttheme,includingTheLostWorld,TheCavern,TheWaterfallView,TheCrystalMountain,TheCloudForestGallery,TheCloudForestTheatreandTheSecretGarden. Wollemianobilis InApril2022,aMaorikuwahasculpturewaspresentedtoSingaporebyPrimeMinisterJacindaArdernofNewZealandduringherfirstofficialtripabroadsincethe2020pandemic.RepresentingstrongfriendshipbetweenNewZealandandSingapore,itistheworkofmastercarversfromNewZealand'sMaoriArtsandCraftsinstitute.[16] SupertreeGrove[edit] Supertreesarethe18tree-likestructuresthatdominatetheGardens'landscapewithheightsthatrangebetween25metres(82 ft)and50metres(160 ft).TheywereconceivedanddesignedbyGrantAssociates,withtheimaginativeengineeringofAtelierOneandAtelierTen.Theyareverticalgardensthatperformamultitudeoffunctions,whichincludeplanting,shadingandworkingasenvironmentalenginesforthegardens.[17] SupertreeGrove,Singapore AnightviewoftheSupertrees TheSupertreesarehometoenclavesofuniqueandexoticferns,vines,orchidsandalsoavastcollectionofbromeliadssuchasTillandsia,amongstotherplants.Theyarefittedwithenvironmentaltechnologiesthatmimictheecologicalfunctionoftrees:photovoltaiccellsthatharnesssolarenergywhichcanbeusedforsomeofthefunctionsoftheSupertrees(suchaslighting),similartohowtreesphotosynthesize,andcollectionofrainwaterforuseinirrigationandfountaindisplays,similartohowtreesabsorbrainwaterforgrowth.TheSupertreesalsoserveairintakeandexhaustfunctionsaspartoftheconservatories'coolingsystems. Thereisanelevatedwalkway,theOCBCSkyway,betweentwoofthelargerSupertreesforvisitorstoenjoyapanoramicaerialviewoftheGardens.Everynight,at7:45pmand8:45pm,theSupertreeGrovecomesalivewithacoordinatedlightandmusicshowknownastheGardenRhapsody.Theaccompanyingmusictotheshowchangeseverymonthorso,withcertainthemessuchasAWorldofWonderandANightofMusicalTheatre,whichfeaturesexcerpts/piecesfromfilmslikeJurassicParkandPiratesoftheCaribbean. ThereisalsoanewlyopenedattractioncalledtheSupertreeObservatory,whichopenedon27December2019.ThisattractionishousedinsidethetallestSupertreewhichis50metrestall.Itcomprises3levels,thegroundfloor,theObservatorySpaceandtheOpen-AirRooftopDeck.VisitorswouldtaketheliftuptotheObservatorySpaceandthereaftertakeaflightofstairsuptotheRooftopDeck.TheObservatorySpaceislocatedonelevelbelowtherooftopdeckanditconsistsofanindoorareawithfull-heightglasswindows,aswellasaperipheraloutdoorwalkway.Here,visitorscanalsoexperienceamessageabouttheeffectsofclimatechangecreativelyconveyedthroughdigitalmedia.TheOpen-AirRooftopDeck,whichisanopen-airobservationdeckonthecanopyofthisSupertree,offers360-degreeunblockedviewsoftheGardensandtheMarinaBayarea.[18] Italy'sPavilioninExpo2015,featuredastructurecalledAlberoDellaVita(or"TreeofLife"inItalian),whichprovedvisuallysimilartoSingapore'sSupertrees. Children'sGarden[edit] DesignedbyGrantAssociates,whichalsodesignedGardensbytheBay,theChildren'sGardenwasfullyfundedbyFarEastOrganizationfor$10 million.Thisattractionwasopenedon21January2014.Thechildren'sgardenisnearthetreehouseandtheadventuretrail.Theadventuretrailconsistsoftrampolines,balancingbeams,hangingbridgesandmore. ItisopenfromTuesdaystoFridaysfrom10a.m.to7p.m.andonSaturdays,Sundaysandpublicholidaysfrom9a.m.to9p.m.ItisclosedonMondays,oronthenextworkingdayifMondayisapublicholiday.[19] Horticulturalthemedgardens[edit] TherearetwodistinctlydifferentsetsofhorticulturalthemedgardenswhichcentreonthehorticulturalheritageofthevariousculturalgroupsinSingaporeandonthebiologyandecologyofgardensandforests.TheyareanimportantpartoftheGardens'edutainmentprogramme,whichaimstobringplantknowledgetothepublic. The"HeritageGardens"themefeaturesgardensthathighlightthevariousculturalgroupsinSingaporeandtheimportantrolethatplantsplayintheirrespectivecultures,aswellasthecountry'scolonialhistory.ItalsofocusesoneconomicallyimportantplantsinSingaporeandSouthEastAsia.ThefourgardensaretheIndianGarden,theChineseGarden,theMalayGardenandtheColonialGarden.[20] The"WorldofPlants"themeemphasizesthewebofrelationshipsamongstthevariousplantswithinafragileforestsetting,showcasingthebiodiversityofplantlifeontheplanet.Itconsistsofsixsubthemesillustratedbysix"gardens",whicharenamedDiscovery,WebofLife,FruitsandFlowers,Understorey,WorldofPalms,andSecretLifeofTrees.[21] BayfrontPlazaandFloralFantasy[edit] AmodelbytheUrbanRedevelopmentAuthorityofthefuturegardenatMarinaSouth TheBayfrontPlazaisthemainentryprecinctintotheGardensfromBayfrontMRTstation.ItincludesanattractioncalledFloralFantasywhichconsistsoffourgardenlandscapesoffloralartistryanda4Drideexperience.The1,500sqmFloralFantasyfeaturesfloralartistry,aswellasa4Dmultimediaridesimulatingthejourneyofadragonfly'sflightpaththroughGardensbytheBay.Includedisalsoanindooreventsspace,theBayfrontPavilion,acafeandapop-upmarkertonweekends.[22] Budget[edit] Thefinalconstructioncostfortheproject,notincludingthepriceofthelandbutincludinganaccessroad,drainageworks,andsoilimprovement,waswithina$1.035 billionallocatedbudget.[23]Theannualoperatingcostwasexpectedtobeapproximately$58 million,ofwhich$28 millionwasforoperationoftheConservatorybuildings.Theprojectreceived1.7 millionvisitorsbetweenJuneandOctober2012,whohadfreeadmissiontomostportionsoftheparkbutwererequiredtopurchaseticketsforenteringtheConservatories.[24] In2006,aninternationalcompetitionforthedesignoftheparkwasheld,attractingmorethan70entriessubmittedby170firmsfrom24countries.TwoBritishfirms–GrantAssociates[25]andGustafsonPorter–wereawardedthecontractsfortheBaySouthandBayEastGardensrespectively. AlongsidetheleaddesignersGrantAssociates,thedesignteamforBaySouthincludedWilkinsonEyre,AtelierTen(environmentaldesignconsultants)andAtelierOne(structuralengineers).TheyweresupportedbyanumberofSingaporefirmsincludingCPGConsultants(architecture,civilandstructural,mechanicalandelectrical),MeinhardtInfrastructure(civilandstructural),Langdon&Seah(costconsultants)andPMLink(projectmanagement).
