RAID0 –AmethodofcombiningtwoharddrivesormoreintoasingleGIANTvolumeofdata,howeverifyouloseonedrive,youloseallyourdata! RAID1 –Usingpairsofdrives,thiswillHALFyourtotalcapacity,butgiveyouacompleteanduptothesecondcopyofallyourdata.Meaningifadrivefails,youhaveanEXACTcopyreadytoaccess. RAID5 –OneofthemostpopularRAIDlevels,Itrequiresatleast3drivesormore,dataiswrittenacrossthedrivesinstripes(waves)andacrosseachstripeofdataonedriveholdsatinynuggetofdatacalled‘parity’withisbasicallyacodedblueprintofthedataontheotherdrivesinthatstripe,theneachstripehastheparitydepositedonadifferentdiskeachtime.Theresultisthatifadrivefails,thesystemcanre-buildthedatausingtheparity(blueprints)oneachstripe.ThiscantaketimethoughanditshouldalsobenotedthatthereadandwriteofdatainaRAID5isalittleslowerthannormalasthesystemhastoworkoutbackgroundcalculationswhilstwritingdata.
