Description ThefirstshipwaslaiddowninAugust1944,whilethelastwaslaunchedinMarch1946.InthattimetheUnitedStatesproduced98Gearing-classdestroyers.TheGearingclasswasaseeminglyminorimprovementofthepreviousSumnerclass,whichwerebuiltfrom1943until1945.ThemaindifferencewasthattheGearingswere14feet(4.3m)longerinthemidshipsection,allowingforincreasedfueltankageforgreaterrange,animportantconsiderationinPacificWaroperations.Moreimportantlyinthelongrun,theGearings'increasedsizemadethemmuchmoresuitableforupgradesthantheSumners,asseeninthewartimeradarpicketsubclass,the1950sradarpicketdestroyer(DDR)andescortdestroyer(DDE)conversions,andtheFleetRehabilitationandModernization(FRAM)conversions1960-65.Asdesigned,theGearings'armamentwasidenticaltotheSumners'.Threetwin5"/38calMark38dualpurpose(DP)mountsconstitutedthemainbattery.The5-inchgunswereguidedbyaMark37GunFireControlSystemwithaMark25firecontrolradarlinkedbyaMark1AFireControlComputerstabilizedbyaMark68,500rpmgyro.Thisfirecontrolsystemprovidedeffectivelong-rangeanti-aircraft(AA)oranti-surfacefire.Twelve40mmgunsand1120mmgunswerealsoretained.TheinitialdesignretainedtheSumners'heavytorpedoarmamentof1021"(533mm)tubesintwoquintuplemounts,firingtheMark15torpedo.Asthethreatfromkamikazeaircraftmountedin1945,andwithfewremainingJapanesewarshipstousetorpedoeson,mostoftheclasshadtheafterquintuple21"torpedotubemountreplacedbyanadditional40mmquadruplemount(priortocompletiononlaterships)for16total40mmguns.26ships(DD-742-745,805-808,829-835,and873-883)wereorderedwithouttorpedotubestoallowforradarpicketequipment;thesewereredesignatedasDDRsin1948.[1][2][3] 1946-59upgrades FollowingWorldWarIImostoftheclasshadtheirAAandanti-submarinewarfare(ASW)armamentupgraded.The40mmand20mmgunswerereplacedby2-63"/50caliberguns(upto2x2,2x1).OnedepthchargerackwasremovedandtwoHedgehogmountsadded.TheK-gunswereretained.Nineadditional(foratotalof35)shipswereconvertedtoradarpicketdestroyers(DDR)intheearly1950s;thesetypicallyreceivedonlyone3"/50caltwinmounttosaveweightforradarequipment,asdidthewartimeradarpickets.Nineshipswereconvertedtoescortdestroyers(DDE),emphasizingASW.USSCarpenter(DD-825)wasthemostthoroughDDEconversion,with43"/70calgunsintwinenclosedmounts,twoWeaponAlphalaunchers,fournew21"torpedotubesfortheMark37ASWtorpedo,andonedepthchargerack.[4] FRAMIupgrade Inthelate1950sforty-fouroftheGearing-classdestroyersunderwentextensivemodernizationoverhauls,knownasFRAMI,whichweredesignedtoconvertthemfromanAA destroyertoananti-submarinewarfareplatform.FRAMremovedalloftheDDRandDDEequipment,andtheseshipswereredesignatedasDDs.FRAMIandFRAMIIconversionswerecompleted1960-65. TheFRAMMKIprogramwasdesignedprimarilyfortheGearing-classdestroyers.Thisupgradeincludedrebuildingtheship'ssuperstructure,engines,electronicsystems,radar,sonar,andweapons.Thesecondtwin5"gunmountandallpreviousAAgunsandASWequipmentwereremoved.UpgradedsystemsincludedSQS-23sonar,SPS-10surfacesearchradar,2×tripleMark32torpedotubes,8-cellAnti-SubmarineRocket(ASROC)boxlauncher,andoneQH-50CDASHASWdronehelicopter,withitsownlandingpadandhangar.BoththeMk32torpedotubesandASROClaunchedMk44homingASWtorpedoes.ASROCcouldalsolaunchanucleardepthcharge.On11May1962,USSAgerholm(DD-826)testedalivenuclearASROCinthe"Swordfish"test.[5] InNavyslang,themodifieddestroyerswerecalled"FRAMcans","can"beingacontractionof"tincan",theslangtermforadestroyerordestroyerescort. TheGyrodyneQH-50CDASHwasanunmannedanti-submarinehelicopter,controlledremotelyfromtheship.Thedronecouldcarry2 ×Mk.44homingASWtorpedoes.DuringthiseratheASROCsystemhadaneffectiverangeofonly5nauticalmiles(9 km),buttheDASHdroneallowedtheshiptodeployASWattacktosonarcontactsasfaras22nauticalmiles(41 km)away.[6] AnupgradedversionofDASH,QH-50D,remainedinusebytheUSArmyuntilMay,2006.[7] FRAMIIupgrade TheFRAMMKIIprogramwasdesignedprimarilyfortheSumnerclassdestroyers,butwasusedtoupgradetheGearingclassaswell.Thisupgradeprogramincludedlife-extensionrefurbishment,anewradarsystem,ASROC,Mk. 32torpedotubes,DASHASWdrone,andmostimportantly,anewvariabledepthsonar(VDS). ServiceandDisposition ManyoftheGearingsprovidedsignificantgunfiresupportintheVietnamWar.TheyalsoservedasescortsforCarrierBattleGroups(CarrierStrikeGroupsfrom2004)andAmphibiousReadyGroups(ExpeditionaryStrikeGroupsfrom2006).DASHwaswithdrawnfromASWservicein1969duetopoorreliability.WithASROCcontinuingtoprovideastandoffASWcapability,theGearingswereretainedinserviceforseveralyears,withmostbeingdecommissionedandtransferredtoforeignnavies1973-80.TheywerereplacedasASWshipsbytheSpruance-classdestroyers,whichwerecommissioned1975-83.ThesehadthesameASWarmamentasaGearingFRAMdestroyer,withtheadditionofimprovedsonarandapilotedhelicopter,initiallytheKamanSH-2Seaspriteandfrom1984theSikorskySH-60Seahawk.SomeGearingsservedintheNavalReserveForce(NRF)from1973,remainingincommissionwithapartialactivecrewtoprovidetrainingforNavalreservists.ThelastWorldWarIIsurfacecombatantinUSnavalservicewastheUSSWilliamC.Lawe(DD-763),aGearingFRAMI,decommissionedandstricken1October1983andexpendedasatarget14July1999.[8] Yangclass AftertheGearing-classshipswereretiredfromUSNservice,manyweresoldabroad,includingoveradozentotheRepublicofChinaNavy(ROCN)inTaiwan.Theseships,alongwithFletcher-classandAllenM.Sumner-classdestroyersalsoacquiredthen,wereupgradedundertheWu Chin(Chinese:武進)I,II,andIIIprogramsandknownthroughouttheROCNastheYang-class(Chinese:陽字號)destroyersastheywereassignednamesthatallendwiththeword"Yang".Thelastbatchof7 WC-IIIprogramvessels,allofthemGearingclass,wereretiredinearly2000s.[9] UnderthemostadvancedWuChinIIIupgradeprogram,allWorldWarTwovintageweaponswereremovedandreplacedwith4 ×HsiungFengIISSM,10 ×SM-1disambiguationneeded(boxlaunchers),1 ×8-cellASROC,1 ×76mmgun,2 ×40mm/70AA,1 ×20mmPhalanxCIWSand2 ×triple12.75"torpedotubes.TheDASHASWdroneswerenotacquired,buthangarfacilitiesaboardthoseshipsthathadthemwerelaterusedtoaccommodateASWversionsofHughesMD500helicopters.
