Atthesametime,EpicmadeseveraldecisionsongameplaythatfeltestablishedthebasisofFortnite.Initiallywhenplayersplacedwallsandotherfortifications,theywouldhavehadplayerscompleteamini-gametocompletetheconstruction.Theyfoundthatthegamewasmoresuccessfulwhenthesefortificationsbuiltthemselves,allowingplayerstocreatefortsquickly,andkeptthisapproach.[16]TheywerealsoabletobringinvariousgamemodesthathadbeenenvisionedinGearsofWar3,butwhichthenwerelimitedbythegame'sengine.Thedynamicnatureofthegameworldduetoplayers'fortificationsandde-constructionrequiredthemtocomeupwithanartificialintelligencepathfindingsolutionfortheenemies.[16]Epicconsideredtheyweretryingtobuildatoolkitforplayerstointeractwithastocreateemergentgameplaysolutionsbasedonthesituationofthemissions,fromwhichtheycancontinuetoexpanduponwithnewitemsthroughoutthelifeofthegame.[16]
