Today,allhealthcareprofessionalsusetheCEAPsystemwhendescribingveindisease.It’sdesignedtobeveryspecific.Inshort,itofferseverythingthattheprevioussystemfailedtodo. The7StagesoftheCEAPClassificationSystem C0:Afunctioning,healthyvenoussystem.Legveinspulsebloodbacktowardstheheartexactlyasthey’resupposedto. Severity:mild C1:Presenceofspiderveins,reticularveins,ortelangiectasia.Bythemselves,spiderveinsarenothingmorethanacosmeticnuisance.Buttheydopointoutsomelevelofrefluxinthelargerveinsofthelegs.They’readirectprecursortovaricoseveins. Severity:mild C2:Theformationofvaricoseveins.Patientsbegintoexperiencesymptomslikeachylegs,swelling,andcramping.Thisleadstoincreasedpressure,whichinturncausessurfaceveinstoswell.Overtime,theybecomestretchedoutandbecomevaricoseveins.Withouttreatment,it’slikelytheconditionwithprogresstothefollowingstage. Severity:moderate C3:Thepresenceofedema,amedicaltermforfluidretentionandswelling.Compressionstockingsandedemapumpscanmanagesymptoms.Buttreatmentwillhelptheunderlyingcondition.Apatient’sveindiseasewillworsenifnottreated. Severity:moderatetosevere C4:Visibleskinchanges.Fluidretentionleadstochangesinthecolor,texture,andappearanceoftheskin.Thepresenceofeczemaandbrownish,purplish,orreddishblotchesiscommon. Severity:severe C5:Painfulankleulcersaroundtheanklesthathealontheirown.Chronicfluidretentionwillcauseincreasedbloodpressurewithinthelegveins.Thiscanleadtoanimpairedcirculationwhichcancauseabreakdownoftheoverlyingskin. Severity:severe C6:Lowerextremityulcersthatdon’theal.About1%ofpatientswithveindiseasewillprogresstoCEAPstage6.Astheconditionworsensulcerswon’thealwithoutspecialtywoundcare.Atthispoint,treatmentismedicallynecessary. HowCanIClassifyMyselfwithCEAP? Mostpeoplewithvaricoseveinsknowtheyhavebulgingveinsintheirlegs.TheCEAPsystemwillhelpthemunderstandtheseverityofthevaricoseveinproblemandseektherighttreatment.
