Today,allhealthcareprofessionalsusetheCEAPsystemwhendescribingveindisease.It’sdesignedtobeveryspecific.Inshort,itofferseverythingthattheprevioussystemfailedtodo. The7StagesoftheCEAPClassificationSystem C0:Afunctioning,healthyvenoussystem.Legveinspulsebloodbacktowardstheheartexactlyasthey’resupposedto. Severity:mild C1:Presenceofspiderveins,reticularveins,ortelangiectasia.Bythemselves,spiderveinsarenothingmorethanacosmeticnuisance.Buttheydopointoutsomelevelofrefluxinthelargerveinsofthelegs.They’readirectprecursortovaricoseveins. Severity:moderatetosevere C4:Visibleskinchanges.Fluidretentionleadstochangesinthecolor,texture,andappearanceoftheskin.Thepresenceofeczemaandbrownish,purplish,orreddishblotchesiscommon. Severity:severe C5:Painfulankleulcersaroundtheanklesthathealontheirown.Chronicfluidretentionwillcauseincreasedbloodpressurewithinthelegveins.Thiscanleadtoanimpairedcirculationwhichcancauseabreakdownoftheoverlyingskin. Severity:severe C6:Lowerextremityulcersthatdon’theal.About1%ofpatientswithveindiseasewillprogresstoCEAPstage6.Astheconditionworsensulcerswon’thealwithoutspecialtywoundcare.Atthispoint,treatmentismedicallynecessary.
