Downloadpublication .pdf​Scholarsofsocialmovementsrecognizethethreatthatoppositionprotestsposetothestabilityofanauthoritarianregime.Extensiveresearchhasbeendoneonhowmassprotestscaninduceregimechange,andinturn,democratization.Weknowlessaboutthemicro-levelprocessesbywhichprotestscaninfluencethevoterbehaviouroftheordinarycitizen.Thisthesisaimstofillthisgap,byusingevidencesfromthe2019socialunrestinHongKong.BycombiningprotestdatafromACLEDandtheAnti-ELABResearchArchive,withapost-electionsurveyfromHongKongElectionStudy,Iexaminehowcitizenswhodidnotvoteforoppositionpartiesinthepreviouselectionrespondtoanti-regimeprotestsandpolicebrutalityintheirneighbourhood.Thefindingsimplythattheeffectsofprotestsandpolicebrutalityaredependentonwhethertherespondentsidentifythemselvesas“Hongkongers”oras“Chinese”.Byusinglogisticregression,Ifindthatoppositionprotestsandpolicebrutalitycanmobilize“Hongkongers”,whopreviouslyabstainedfromvoting,tovoteforoppositionparties.However,italsorefrainsthosewhoidentifythemselvesas“Chinese”fromdoingthesame.Ialsofindthatnonviolentprotestsincreasethelikelihoodthatpreviousregimesupporters,whoidentifythemselvesas“Hongkongers”,willdefecttooppositionparties.
