Register SignIn Advertisement in: Destroyers,USNVessels FletcherClass Categorypage Edit Editsource History Talk(0) TheFletcher-classwasaclassofdestroyersbuiltbytheUnitedStatesduringWorldWarII.Theclasswasdesignedin1939,asaresultofdissatisfactionwiththeearlierdestroyerleadertypesofthePorterandSomersclasses.SomewentontoserveduringtheKoreanWarandintotheVietnamWar,namedforAdmiralFrankF.Fletcherwasthelargestclassofdestroyerordered,andwasalsooneofthemostsuccessfulandpopularwiththedestroyermenthemselves.ComparedtoearlierclassesbuiltfortheNavy,theycarriedasignificantincreaseinanti-aircraftweaponsandotherweaponry,whichcauseddisplacementstorise.Theirflushdeckconstructionaddedstructuralstrength,althoughitdidmakethemrathercramped,aslessspacewasavailablebelowdeckscomparedwitharaisedforecastle. TheUnitedStatesNavycommissioned175Fletcher-classdestroyersbetween1942and1944,morethananyotherdestroyerclass,andthedesignwasgenerallyregardedashighlysuccessful.Fletchershadadesignspeedof38knotsandanarmamentoffive5"gunsinsinglemountswith1021"torpedoesintwoquintuplecenterlinemounts. Thelong-rangeFletcher-classshipsperformedeverytaskaskedofadestroyer,fromanti-submarinewarfareandanti-aircraftwarfaretosurfaceaction.TheycouldcoverthevastdistancesrequiredbyfleetactionsinthePacificandservedalmostexclusivelyinthePacificTheaterofOperationsduringWorldWarII,duringwhichtheyaccountedfor29ImperialJapaneseNavysubmarinessunk.Inamassiveeffort,theFletcherswerebuiltbyshipyardsacrosstheUnitedStatesand,afterWorldWarIIended,11weresoldtocountriesthattheyhadbeenbuilttofightagainst:Italy,Germany,andJapan,aswellasothercountries,wheretheyhadevenlonger,distinguishedcareers.ThreehavebeenpreservedasmuseumshipsintheU.S.andoneinGreece.
