Micron'supcomingleading-edgefabwillproduceDRAMandwillbearathercolossalmanufacturingfacility.Atbuild-out,whenthefabisfullyequippedwithtools,itscleanroomspacewillreach600,000feet2 (55,700meters2),whichisabouttwotimeslargercomparedtocleanroomspaceatGlobalFoundries'Fab8andwhichiscomparabletocleanroomspaceatgiantfabsoperatedbyMicron'srivalsSamsungandSKHynixisSouthKorea.Essentially,MicronwilloperateoneofthelargestsemiconductorproductionfacilitiesintheU.S. ThenewfabwillbelocatedadjacenttoMicron'sR&DcenterandheadquartersnearBoise,Idaho,whichwillbringtogetherscientists,processtechnologydevelopers,andmanufacturingengineersinonelocation,somethingthatpromisestospeeduptime-to-yieldandtime-to-marketforadvancedDRAMs.  "Withthisfacility,MicronwillcloselycoupleR&Dandmanufacturing,providingsynergiesthatwillenableustoacceleratetheproductionrampofadvancedmemorytechnology," saidSanjayMehrotra,presidentandCEO ofMicron. Microniscurrentlypreppingthesiteforthenewfabandplanstobeginconstructioninearly2023inabidtostartbringingcleanroomspaceonlinegraduallystartingin2025.Thefacilitywillbeequippedwithmoderndeepultraviolet(DUV)andextremeultraviolet(EUV)lithographytoolsandwillmakememoryusingoneofMicron'sadvancedEUV-enabledproductionnodes.ThecompanyintendstostartfabbingDRAMsatitsnewfacilitysometimesin2025andthenrampupproductiontothefullcapacityinthefollowingyears.  Atpresentitishardtoguesswhichfabricationprocesswillbeadoptedatthenewfab.ConsideringthefactthatMicronisexpectedtostartDRAMproductionusingits firstEUV-enabledmanufacturingtechnology(1γ) sometimesinmid-2023–early-2024,itislikelythatthefabnearBoise,Idaho,willadoptthecompany'ssecondEUV-enabledprocess(1δ).Yet,thisisaneducatedguess(basedonhabitualintroductionofnewDRAMnodesevery18monthsorso)atthispoint. Micronintendstomake40%ofitsglobalDRAMoutputinAmericain2030s,arebalancethatthecompanyhasnotdoneindecades.Therefore,inadditiontoMicron'snewfabnearBoise,Idaho,thecompanyplanstobuildayetanotherDRAMfacilityintheU.S.CurrentlythecompanyisinthefinalstagesofitsselectionprocessforanothersiteinAmerica.  Micronwillinvest$15billioninthenewmanufacturingfacilitynearBoise,Idaho.ThecompanyalsoplanstogetincentivesfromthelocalandstateauthoritiesandsupportfromthefederalgovernmentenabledbytheCHIPSandScienceactsignedintolawlastmonth.
