Permalink 6/10 Sengokuslasherdoneright...butonlyalmost incalor9January2020 Nioh...whatcanonesayaboutsuchapolarizinggame?Ithadthepotentialtobeoneofthegreatestgamesofalltime,butultimatelyitmissesthemark.Let'sgetthepositivesoutoftheway.Combatsystemisabsolutelyscintillating.Thisgamehaspossiblythebestcombatinquiteawhile.The3stances,thewidevarietyofSamurai,NinjutsuandOnmyoskills,theKiandKiPulsesystem,thedodging,blockingandparries...Icouldgoon.Itisajoytoexperimentwithsuchacombatsystemthatisalmostinfiniteindepth.Thestoryisquitegoodbarsomeclichesifyouareabletoappreciatethefactthatthecharactersarebasedonhistoricalfigures.ThereisacertainthrillinclaimingyoubestedthelegendaryTachibanaMuneshigeorOdaNobunaga,andanevenbiggerthrillindoingquestswhilebeingaidedbythelikesoftheOne-EyedDragon,DateMasamuneasfriendlyNPCs.TheshowdownagainstSanadawhereyouhavetopickoffeachofhisBravesintheDLCwasfantastic.Williamisrelatableandthecutscenesareengaging.Thebosseswerevariedandforthemostpart,welldesigned.However,acoupleweredesignedinsuchamannerthattheyrequiretheplayertobe100%focusedeverysecondtoavoiddeath,whichsometimesmadebeatingthemachoreasopposedtobeingfun.Butthatisaninsignificantgripeasyougetgeartoeventhingsup.Unfortunately,thepositivesstopthere.TeamNinjahadtherecipeforgreatness,butatsomepoint,messedupinaddingtheingredients.Theleveldesignisbad.Andbybad,Imeanhorrible.Andbyhorrible,likereally,reallydismal.Exceptforacoupleoflevels,thereisliterallynoimmersion,nojoyinwadingthroughthelevelsandsomeoftheshortcuts(aclearattempttomimicDarkSouls)areabsurd.Theblandnessofthelevelsiscompoundedbythelootsystem.Besidesinvolvingtediousgrinding,lootcomesinwhatisbasicallyabunchofstatsthatyouneedtocarefullyshiftthroughforaffixingthebestones.Sinceyougetgearfromrevenants,thereisnoneedtogolookingforthesamelootinchestsorcorpseshiddeninthelevels,andthistotallykillsthejoyofexploration.Asyoucansee,leveldesignproblemsareexacerbatedbyalackofmotivationtosearchforloot,andbyatediouslootsystemoverall.Whichisfurtheraggravatedbyalackofenemyvariety.Youtrudgethroughblandlevelafterblandlevel,withnomotivationforexploration,allthetimefacingjustthesamehandfulofenemies--Dweller,Skeleton,HornedYokai,OniandOnyudu.Theseguysareliterallyineverylevelandtherearefewvariationsotherthanreskins.Thepointofabrilliantcombatsystemisdefeatedwhenyouhavesofewregularenemiestouseiton.Limitedenemyvarietyaddstothetediumcreatedbypoorleveldesign.Thefinalstampofmediocrityisthedeliberatebloatingofthegamebyanumberofpointlesssidemissionswhichreusethesamelevelsandsamebossesoverandover,ormakeyouface2or3ofthepreviousbossestogether,justforthesakeofdifficulty.Notcountingthetwilightmissionswhichagainusethesamemapandbosses,withjusthigherdifficulty.Thisreallycontributedtothegamebecomingaslogattheend,thefunevaporatingaltogether.Thesidemissionscouldhavebeencutdownto2-3perregionwhichwouldhaveprobablymadethegamelessexasperatingandpaperedoversomeofthenegativeslikepoorleveldesign.TheDLCanddualbossmissiondifficultiesdonotnaturallyflowfromNG,butisscaledtoalevelthatforcesyoutoembarkonatediousgrindforbettergeartofacethemcompetently.Thisprolongsthealreadytediousgameevenfurther.Inconclusion,Niohhadmanyelementsforgreatness,butits'insistenceonlevelsjustbeing"arenas"asopposedtoencouragingexplorationandimmersion,coupledwithrepetitiveness,limitedenemyvarietyandadiabloinspiredlootsystem,justfailsonmanymorelevels.Idon'tthinkTeamNinjahaveanyintentiontochangeagreatdealinNioh2asthegamehasperformedwell.Itiscertainlyapity,forallthegamerequiresisabitmorepolishandattentiontodetailsotherthanthecombat.Igive4pointsforthecombatsystemalone,1pointforcutscenesandNPCsinspiredbyhistoricalfigures,1forgoodbossdesignand0foreveryotheraspectofthegametoarriveatmy6rating,whichfeelsprettyfairforwhatthisgameoffers. 3outof4foundthishelpful.
