WhatisContent-BasedInstruction(CBI)? Content-BasedInstructionisanapproachtolanguageteachingthatfocusesnotonthelanguageitself,butratheronwhatisbeingtaughtthroughthelanguage;thatis,thelanguagebecomesthemediumthroughwhichsomethingnewislearned.INtheCBIapproachthestudentlearnstheTLbyusingittolearnsmeothernewcontent.ForexamplebystudyingtheFrenchRevolutionwhileusingtheFrenchlangauge.Thelanguagebeinglearnedandusedistaughtwithinthecontextofthecontent.ThetheorybehindCBIisthatwhenstudentsareengagedwithmorecontent,itwillpromoteintrinsicmotivation.Studentswillbeabletousemoreadvancedthinkingskillswhenlearningnewinformationandwillfocuslessonthestructureofthelanguage.Thisapproachisverystudent-centeredasitdependsentirelyonthestudents’abilitytousethelanguage. Whatcanbeconsidered‘content’? Therearemanythingsthatcanbeconsidered‘content’;whatisimportantisthatwhatisbeingtaughtordiscussedthroughthelanguagenotbelanguageinstructionrelated.Aspectsofthecurriculum,discussionsaboutcurrenteventsandworldculturesorevengeneraltopicsofinterestareallvalid‘content’options. Imagineyouareteachingthepasttensetoyourstudents.Brainstormandwritedown10'content'subjectsthatarerelatedtoyourtargetlanguagethatyoucouldusetopracticethisgrammarconcept(i.e.Teachingaboutahistoricalevent). HowcanCBIbeusedinthelanguageclassroom?
