Overtime,herbehaviourbecomesmoreandmoreerratic.Finally,Susannahhasaseizureandseeksmedicaltreatment.ThedoctorconsultedisadamantitisdowntoSusannahpartyingtoomuch,workingtoohardandnotgettingenoughsleep.ShemovesinwithhermotherRhona(Carrie-AnneMoss)and,afteranemotionaloutburst,hasanotherseizure,andistakentoaclinicwheresheundergoesanMRI.Susannahalsobelievesshemayhavebipolardisorderduetoherseveremoodchanges. RhonastrugglestocareforSusannah,andshelatermovesinwithherfatherTom(RichardArmitage)andhisfiancée.Duringdinneronenight,shebecomesviolenttowardsthemwhilehavinganotheroutburst,andherparentsdemandsheishospitalizeddespitetheMRI,EEG,allothertestsshowingnormalresults.There,oneofthedoctorsinformsSusannah'sparentsshecouldhaveschizophrenia,andsaysthatifherbehaviordoesnotimprove,shewillbetransferredtoapsychiatrichospital. Susannahgraduallybecomescatatonic,andDr.SouhelNajjar(NavidNegahban)isaskedtohelpininvestigatinghercase.HehasSusannahdrawaclock;shedrawsitwithallofthenumbers(1–12)ontherightsideoftheface,leadinghimtobelievethattherighthemisphereofherbrainisswollenandinflamed.Najjarhasherundergoabrainbiopsyfortesting.Followingthebiopsy,itisfoundthatSusannahhasararediseasecalledanti-NMDAreceptorencephalitis,abraininflammation,whichNajjardescribesas"abrainonfire".Najjarbeginstreatment,whichleadstoaslowbutfullrecoveryofhercognitiveabilities.
