TheMegatheriumfossilsaretwohalvesofthesameskull, oneheldattheRoyalCollegeofSurgeonsofEnglandMuseumandtheotheratDownHouse(lookedafterbyEnglishHeritage).Thefossilsconfirmedthat,despiteweighinguptofourtonnes,theextinctanimalswereindeedrelatedtomodern-daysloths.  ButwhatactuallywasMegatherium? Megatherium americanum isknownfromArgentina,Uruguay and Bolivia.FossilsoftheanimalshavebeenfoundindepositsdatingfromtheMiddlePleistocene(around400,000yearsago)tothebeginningoftheHolocene(around8,000yearsago). Weknowthatthey overlappedwithhumansintimeas Megatherium fossilshavebeenfoundwithcutmarksonthem,suggestingthatthesegiantslothswereonthemenuthousandsofyearsago. Itwasabletostandandwalkonitshindlegs,makingitthelargestbipedalmammalofalltime.
