Alearningcommunityisasmallgrouporcohortofstudentswhosharecommonacademicgoalsandworkcollaborativelyintheclassroomwithoneormoreprofessors.AtLIUBrooklyn,weofferFirstYearLearningCommunitiesforenteringstudentsandCollaborativeLearningCommunitiesforallstudents. Whenyouenrollinalearningcommunity,youwillbepartofacohortof22-24students. Together,youwilltakecoursesthatareeither“linked”thematicallyorenhancedbypeerlearning.Bytakingclassestogetherand/orengaginginpeer-to-peerlearning,yougettoknoweachotherbetter,learnfromeachother,andsupporteachother.Andbecauseclassesarelimitedto22-24students,youandyourinstructorswillgettoknoweachotherbetter,too! InFirstYearLearningCommunities,youwillenrollintwoorthreeclassesthatsatisfycorerequirementswhilethefacultycollaboratestocreateamoreintegratedlearningexperience.Yourinstructorswillteachthematerialrequiredforthecourseandworkcloselytogethertoconnecttheircoursesthroughacommontheme.Forexample,inalearningcommunitythatlinksCompositionandPsychology,acommonthememightbe“health”andyoumightusewriting,research,andcriticalthinkingtoexplorethepsychologicalimplicationsofahealthproblemsuchasdiabetes.Thisway,youcanconnectandapplywhatyoulearn. Becausetherearemanydifferentthemes,youcanusuallyfindonethatrelatestoyouracademicand/orcareerinterests.Oryoucanexploreanewsubjectoridea,perhapsdiscoveringalifelongpassionorevenanewdirection.Ifyouareundecidedaboutyourmajor,learningcommunitiescanintroduceyoutoanewwayoflookingattheworld. InCollaborativeLearningCommunities,youwillenrollinasingleclass,suchasBiology1orPsychology3,andformalearningcommunitybyworkingcloselywiththeprofessorandoneormorepeerleaderswhohelpfacilitatepeerlearning.Bystudyingtogetherwithotherstudentsandapeerleader,astudentwhohassuccessfullycompletedthecourseandworkswithyourprofessor,youwillhavethechancetoaskquestions,talkthroughsubjectmatteryoufindconfusing,andworktogetherwithyourclassmatestolearnthematerial. Studentswhoexperiencemoresocial,connectedlearningtendtobecomemoreengagedinandoutoftheclassroomcommunityandthusincreasetheirpotentialforacademicsuccess.Inalearningcommunity,youwillalsogetadditionalsupportbecausethelearningcommunitiesprogramhasitsownadvisersandworkscloselywithotherstudentsupportservices.Mostlearningcommunitiessatisfycorerequirements.Mostimportant,theymakelearningfun.Theyhelpstudentslearntolovelearning.
