Culturalandcreativelearningisavitalpartofeducation.Itgiveschildrentheconfidenceandcapabilitythattheywillneedinaworldandeconomythatdependsoninnovation.ItisabasicblockinbuildingthefutureoftheUK.Artseducationislife-enhancing,makinganimportantcontributiontothewidergoalofdevelopingcreativity.Thecrucialroleofteachersisdevelopingyoungmindsthroughexploration,discoveryandcreativity.Whenchildrentakepartinawiderangeofarts,theydiscovertheirownartisticvoice.Creativityisimportanttobothteachingandlearning.Toooften,thesetwoaspectsaretreatedasone.Itispossibletoimagineacreativeteacherwhopersonallyenterscreativelyintotheclassroomcontext,yetfailstoignitechildren’screativelearning.Similarly,eventhemostmundaneteachingmightcauseachildtoreactcreatively,evenifitistobecreativelydistracting! Creativeteachingisacollaborativeenterprise.Itisbasedonengagementandrisk-taking,andisopentotheunexpected,thereflectiveandthetransformational.IncommencingtheMyCreativeSchoolprogramme(initiatedwhenIwasDirectoroftheEducationCommission),IwasinterestedininnovativewaysfortheEducationCommissiontopartnerwithANewDirection(AND)tosupportthedeliveryofcurriculum-relevantcreativeactivityandtoaccessandparticipateinarts-basedlearning.Iwaskeentopartneronaprojectwhichprovidedprofessionalopportunitiesforteacherstodeveloptheircreativeskills.Thefocuswasonhelping‘good’schoolstobecomeoutstandingschools.OneortwodesignatedteachersineachschoolworkedalongsidecreativepractitionerstodevelopanddesignactivitiesandschemesofworkwhichachievedtargetsfromtheSchoolDevelopmentand/orOfstedActionPlans.Therewasarealfocusonhelpinggoodteacherstobecomeevenbetter,outstanding,creativeandexcitingteachers. Theaimwastogeneratecreativeteachingandcreativelearninginasustainablewaythatwouldtransformtheschool.Thisinvolvedriskandencouragingtheunexpected.Teachersworkedalongsidecreativepractitionerstoadoptamorequestioningstance,bothintermsoftheirownpracticeandintermsofpupils’learning.Theprojectsthatweredevelopedpromotedself-directedlearning,encouragingthepupilstothinkmoreaboutlearningoptionsandtogenerateandappraiseideas.Themainchangenotedwasthewayteachersplanned,andthewaytheyusedthelearningenvironment.Therewasagreaterinclusionofchoiceandautonomyforthepupilsandagreaterselectionofcertainapproaches.Differentlearningenvironmentswereused,especiallytheoutdoors.
