HISTORYOFTHEDISCOVERYOFLASCAUX InSeptember1940,MarcelRavidatdiscoveredaholeinthehillofLascaux.Hereturnedtothesiteon12SeptemberwithGeorgesAgniel,SimonCoencasandJacquesMarsal.Thefouryoungmenenlargedtheholeandmanagedtoslipinside.There,withonlyalampaslighting,theywerethefirsttohavebeforetheireyesthepaintingsleftbyourCro-Magnonancestors. INTERNATIONALCENTREFORCAVEART Inordertoallowallthepublictoadmirethemasterpiecesofprehistory,anidenticalreconstructionoftheLascauxsitehasbeenundertaken(samepaintings,sametechniques,samepigments...)ItistheInternationalCentreofCaveArtofMontignac-Lascaux. TheprehistoricmasterpiecesoftheVézèreValleyinDordogne-PérigordcanbeseenonthesitesoftheMontignac-LascauxInternationalCentreforCaveArtandtheParcduThot. Moregenerally,theVézèreValley,oneofthecradlesofhumanity,offersamultitudeofprehistoricsites. THEARTOFCROMAGNON CroMagnonisoneofthefirstartistsofhumanity.Often,whenvisitingthedecoratedcavesoftheVézèreValley,oneistrulyinaweoftheworksproducedandevenmoresooftheingenioususeofthematerialsavailable.
