Design[edit] TechnicaldrawingoftheFletcher-classdestroyer LaunchofFletcherandRadford,3May1942 TheFletcherclasswasthefirstgenerationofdestroyersdesignedaftertheseriesofnavaltreatiesthathadlimitedshipdesignsheretofore.ThegrowthinthedesignwasinpartaresponsetothechallengethathaddoggedU.S.NavydesignsincopingwithlongrangeoperationsinthePacificOcean.Theywerealsotocarrynofewerthanfive5 in(127 mm)gunsandtendeck-mountedtorpedotubesonthecenterline,allowingthemtomeetanyforeigndesignonequalterms.Comparedtoearlierdesigns,theFletcherswerelarge,allowingthemtoadapttoevolvingdefensiveprioritiesthroughtheadditionoftwo40-millimetre(1.6 in)BoforsquadruplemountAAgunsaswellassix20 mm(0.79 in)OerlikondualAAgunpositions.ThisadditiontotheAAsuiterequiredthedeletionoftheforwardquintupletorpedomount,achangedoneunderthe4April1945anti-kamikazeprogram.[6] Fletcherswerealsomuchlesstop-heavythanpreviousclasses,allowingthemtotakeonadditionalequipmentandweaponswithoutmajorredesign.TheywerefortunateincatchingAmericanproductionattherightmoment,becoming"the"destroyerdesign,withonlytheFletcher-classderivatives,theAllenM.SumnerandGearingclasses,followingit.[5] Thefirstdesigninputswereinthefallof1939fromquestionnairesdistributedarounddesignbureausandtheOfficeoftheChiefofNavalOperations.Thedesignparameterswerethearmamentsdesiredofthenextdestroyer.Assuch,thequestionswereofhowmanyguns,torpedoes,anddepthchargeswereseenasdesirable.Alsoaskedwasatwhatpointwouldthedesigngrowlargeenoughtobecomeatorpedotargetinsteadofatorpedodeliverysystem.[7]Theanswerthatcamebackwasthatfive5 in(127 mm)dual-purposeguns,twelvetorpedoes,andtwenty-eightdepthchargeswouldbeideal,whileareturntothe1,500-tondesignsofthepastwasseenasundesirable.Speedrequirementsvariedfrom35to38knots(65to70 km/h;40to44 mph),andshortcomingsintheearlierSimsclass,whichweretop-heavyandneededleadballasttocorrectthisfault,causedtheFletcherdesigntobewidenedby18 in(46 cm)ofbeam.[8]AswithotherpreviousU.S.flushdeckdestroyerdesigns,seagoingperformancesuffered.ThiswasmitigatedbydeploymenttothePacificOcean,whichisrelativelycalmcomparedtotheAtlantic.[9] Toachieve38knotswitha500-tonincreaseindisplacement,powerwasincreasedfrom50,000 shp(37,000 kW)to60,000 shp(45,000 kW)comparedtothepreviousBensonandGleavesclasses.TheFletchersfeaturedair-encasedboilersproducingsteamat600 psi(4,100 kPa)and850 °F(450 °C),withtwo350kWsteamturbinedrivenelectricalgeneratorsanda100 kWemergencydieselgenerator.[10]Typically,Babcock&WilcoxboilersandGeneralElectricgearedsteamturbineswereequipped,althoughotherdesignsandmanufacturerswereprobablyusedtomaximizetherateofproduction. Ten21 in(530 mm)torpedotubeswerefittedintwoquintuplemountsamidships,firingthe21-inchMark15torpedo.Anti-submarinearmamentwastworacksfor300-pound(140 kg)depthchargesatthesternandsixK-gun300-pounddepthchargethrowersamidships. Anti-aircraftarmamentinitiallywaslight,withaquadruple1.1"/75calibergunlocatedinanelevatedtubbetweenthenumberthreeandfour5-inchgunmountsandsixOerlikon20mmcannons(twoinfrontofandbelowthebridgeandfouramidships).InJune1942,the1.1"gunwasreplacedbyatwinBofors40mmgunmount;insomeships,anothertwinmountmayhavebeenaddedonthefantailbetweenthedepthchargeracks.InFebruary1943,thefantail-mountedBoforswasremovedandonetwinmountwasplacedoneachsideoftheaftfunnel,bringingthetotalnumberof40 mmtosix. In1942and1943,thenumberofOerlikoncannonswassteadilyincreasedwithshipsmodifiedbeforeleavingtheshipyardwithaseventh20 mmmountinfrontofthebridgebehindthenumbertwo5"gunmountandanywherefromonetothreemountsontheflyingbridgedependingupontheconfigurationoftheship.Incombat,commandersoftenrequisitionedadditionalgunswithsomeshipsmountinguptothirteen20 mmcannons.InJuneandJuly1943,twomoretwinBoforsmountswereaddedinplaceofthe20 mmcannonsinfrontofandbelowthebridge,givingatotaloften.Withthismodification,theOerlikoncannonswererearrangedandtheirnumberwasstandardizedatseven;fouramidshipsandthreeinaheart-shapedmountonthefantail. Duetotheincreasingthreatfromkamikazeattacks,beginninginJuly1945someshipsreturningtotheUnitedStatesforrefitsreceivedfurtheranti-aircraftmodifications,replacingtheforwardsetoftorpedotubeswithgunplatformshousingtwoquadruple40 mmguns(foratotalofeighteen).Thesevensingle20 mmgunswerereplacedwithsixtwinmounts(fouramidshipsandtwoonthefantail. Three(Pringle,StevensandHalford)werebuiltwithaircraftcatapultsafterdeletionofthereartorpedotubemountandthenumber35-inchgunmount.Thisalterationwasnotasuccessandwasnotrepeated.ThesethreedestroyerswerelaterconvertedtotheregularFletcher-classconfiguration.
