IntheStarWarscomics,theRebellionwinsnumerousvictoriesagainsttheEmpireafterthedestructionoftheDeathStar,destroyingitsmajorweaponsfactoryonCymoon1,breakinganImperialblockadearoundtheRebelworldofTureenVIIbystealingtheImperialI-classStarDestroyerHarbingerandrecruitingtheMonCalamaritradingfleettoberefittedasanassaultfleet.SuchfirepowerwouldfinallyallowtheAlliancetoattacktheEmpireonalargerscale.However,oneoftheRebellion'sallies,QueenTriosofShu-Torun(whoseworld'stechnologyhadbeenfittedintotheshipsofthenewRebelfleet),revealedherselfasanundercoverImperialagentsentbyDarthVadertosabotagetheirefforts.WiththeirshipsunexpectedlyparalyzedbytheShu-Toruntechnology,thegatheredRebelfleetcoulddolittleastheyweretargetedfordestructionbyVader'sImperialfleet.HalftheRebelshipsweredestroyedinthebattlebeforeLeiafoundawayaroundthesabotageandallowedtheremainingshipstoescape.However,GeneralsJanDodonnaandDavitsDraven,aswellasseveralotherhigh-rankingRebelofficers,werekilledduringthebattleandtheremainingRebelshipswereseparatedintheirflight.MonMothmainstructedallRebelcellstoregroupintimewhilestrikingoutattheEmpirewhenandhowtheycould.NotuntiltheBattleofEndorwouldthewholeforceoftheRebellionbeonceagainunitedinasingleplace. InTheEmpireStrikesBack,theAlliancesuffersacrushingdefeatonHothwhenoneoftheirmaincommandcenters,EchoBase,isoverrunbytheDarthVader'selitepersonalImperialarmedforces,theDeathSquadronandthe501stLegion.TheremainingforcesoftheRebellionareforcedtostaymobile,usingAdmiralAckbar'sflagship,HomeOne,astheirheadquarters. TheNewRepublicfounditselfwithnoshortageofrecruitsandresources:thedecliningpopularityoftheEmpirepushedmanylongtimeImperialloyaliststotheRebelcause,includingthoseofInfernoSquadron,whoafterOperationCinder,whichsawthedestructionofcountlessImperialworlds,openedtheeyesofmanytotheatrocitiesoftheEmpire.EventhemostdedicatedImperialssuchasInfernoSquadroncommanderIdenVersioweremovedtodefectafterthewitnessingthedestructionofherhomeworldVardos.FinallyrealizingtheEmpire'spropagandahaddeceivedthem,manyImperialsbegantofeelshameovertheiractions,inparticularoverthedestructionofAlderaan. DespitefactthattheNewRepublicwasnowwinningthewar,hadalotmoreresourcesthanbefore—andalotmorerecruits—theNewRepublicwassufferingfromlogisticnightmare.Thedecentralizedstructurethatservedthemwellbecamealiability;describedas"aragtagforcestrategicallyill-fedandcobbledtogetherofincompatibleshipsandsquadrons".[13]TheAllianceFleetshiftedmilitarydoctrine;theguerrillawarfareaspectofthegrandstrategywasde-emphasized,andconventionalforcestookovertheprimaryprosecutionofthewar.OncetheNewRepublicbecamepowerfulenough,theAllianceFleetwasreorganizedintotheNewRepublicMilitary,chargedwiththedefenseoftheNewRepublic.
