THEGALACTICCIVILWAR AstheRebelliongrewmoreorganizedandgainedsupportintheImperialSenate,theEmpiresoughttocrushresistancebycompletingconstructionoftheDeathStar,anarmoredbattlestationwithenoughfirepowertodestroyanentireplanet.RebelspiesstoletheDeathStarplansanddeliveredthemtoPrincessLeiaOrgana,anImperialSenatorandamemberoftheAlliance.DarthVadercapturedLeia’sstarshipaboveTatooine,buttheprincesshadhiddentheplansinthememorybanksofR2-D2.DeterminedtocrushtheRebellion,GrandMoffTarkindemonstratedtheDeathStar’spowerbyincineratingBailOrgana’shomeworldofAlderaan.HeallowedLeiatoescape,trailinghertotheprincipalRebelbaseonthemoonYavin4.TheRebelscounteredwithadesperateplan,sendingsquadronsofstarfightersupagainstthebattlestation.BeforetheDeathStarcoulddestroyYavin4,LukeSkywalkerusedtheForcetoguideaprotontorpedointoanexhaustportleadingtothebattlestation’smainreactor.ThedestructionoftheDeathStarsavedtheAlliance--andthefiresofresistancebegantospreadamongtheEmpire’sworlds. TheEmpirestruckbackwithanoverwhelmingdisplayofmilitarymight,brutallycrackingdownondissentandsendingitswarshipsacrossthegalaxyinsearchoftheRebels’newprincipalbase.AfteranImperialprobedroiddiscoveredEchoBaseontheiceplanetHoth,theAlliance’sGeneralRieekanorderedanimmediateevacuation.Rieekan’squickdecisionsavedmanylivesandpreventedadisaster,buttheRebelsstillsufferedaterribledefeat.Batteredbutunbowed,theAllianceregroupedataprearrangedrendezvouspoint,formingadeep-spaceconvoyofwarshipsinanefforttostayaheadofImperialhunters. UnderthedirectionofMonMothmaandAdmiralAckbar,theRebelfleetgatheredatSullustforanall-outattackonthesecondDeathStar,underconstructionabovetheForestMoonofEndor.TheAlliancehadlearnedthatEmperorPalpatinewaspersonallyoverseeingthisnewproject,andriskedaconfrontationinhopesofendingthewarwithaquickstrike.MothmaandAckbardidn’tknowPalpatinehadleakedtheinformationaboutthebattlestationandhispresenceaboardit.Histrapverynearlysucceeded:theRebelscouldn’tmatchthefirepoweroftheImperialfleet,letaloneaDeathStarthatturnedouttobefullyoperational.ButastriketeamledbyLeiaandHanSolodestroyedtheshieldgeneratorprotectingtheDeathStar,allowingLandoCalrissianandWedgeAntillestoflyintothesuperstructureandblowupthestation’smainreactor.Meanwhile,LukeSkywalkermanagedtoawakenthegoodslumberinginDarthVader.VaderkilledPalpatine,anactofsacrificethatlefttheEmpireleaderlessandendedSithruleofthegalaxy.
