Contents 1Historyoftheproject 2Launches 3Environmentalconcerns 4Seealso 5References Historyoftheproject[edit] SouthernLaunchestablisheditsheadquartersinAdelaidein2018,beforethecitywasannouncedashomefortheAustralianSpaceAgency.[1]ItsofficesarelocatedinPirieStreet,Adelaide.[2] ThelaunchpadatWhalersWaywaspubliclyannouncedinDecember2018,withSouthernLaunchleadingtheproject.[3]TheprojectwasdeclaredamajordevelopmentbythestateofSouthAustraliaon22August2019,[4]andon23October2019SouthernLaunchmadeajointannouncementwithPerigeeAerospaceofSouthKoreaaboutthelaunchofthe"BlueWhale1"rocketfromtheWhalersWayfacility.[5][6] ThefacilitywasofficiallyapprovedbytheAustralianSpaceAgencyon14July2021,[7]intendedforusetolaunchcommercialsatellites.[8] SouthernLaunchplannedtobuildtwolaunchpadsfororbitallaunchestopolarandsun-synchronousorbits.[9]Pad1wasexpectedtohostuptothreetestlaunchesbytheendof2021.[7] Launches[edit] Whenfullyoperational,itisanticipatedthataround25launchesayearwilltakeplaceatWhalersWay.[10] PerigeeAerospacebecamethefirstcustomer[11]withaplannedlaunchofitsrocket"BlueWhale1"inJuly2020.[12]However,thishadnotbeenlaunchedbylateAugust.[13] On16September2021,06:39UTC[14][15]theTaiwaneseTiSPACE-company'sHapithIrocket(flightVS01[16])launchedfromWhalersWayPad1onasuborbitaltestflight,[17]aftertwoabortedlaunches.[18]ThiswasthemaidenflightofHapithIandfirstofthreetestlaunchesfromPad1atWhalersWay.[17]Theflightsufferedalaunchfailureatignition,causingtherockettocatchfire.[19]Theintendedapogeeoftheflightwas250 km(160 mi),[20]andaspayloadtherocketcarriedanIonosphereScintillationPackage[21]fortheTaiwaneseNationalSpaceOrganization,forthepurposeofIonosphericscintillationresearch.[citationneeded] Environmentalconcerns[edit] ConcernshavebeenraisedbyenvironmentalistsfromtheNatureConservationSocietyofSouthAustralia(NCSSA)andTraditionalOwnerstheNauopeople[citationneeded],asthreatenedspeciessuchasthesouthernemuwrenandwhite-belliedwhipbirdinhabitthearea[citationneeded],whichcouldbeaffectedbythenoise,andthereareplacesofculturalsignificancetotheNauopeople.EnvironmentalimpactassessmentswerebeingundertakenasofMay2021,withplanstomodifythesiteandimplementmitigationstrategiesshouldproblemsbefound.SouthernLaunchhascommittedtoprotectingnatureandmanagingtourismactivitiestoensurethattheenvironmentwillbepreserved.[22] Proteststookplaceatthesiteaheadofthefirstscheduledlaunchon9September2021,afterwhaleswerereportedswimminginFisheriesBay,eastofthemaritimeexclusionzone,andpoliceattended.Whaleswerelaterconfirmed30kmawayinBostonBay,andnoneobservedinFisheriesBay.[23]Localresidentsandconservationists,includingtheNatureConservationSociety,WildernessSociety,ConservationCouncilofSouthAustralia,theNationalTrustofAustralia(SA),BirdsSAandTreesforLifehavebeencallingforanindependentreview.[24]AnecologistfromtheUniversityofAdelaideandtheNCSSAareconcernedthattheextensiveclearing(23.76 ha(58.7acres)ofvegetation)andconstructionworkinvolvedinexpandingthefacilitycouldcausethesouthernemuwrentobecomeextinct.SouthernLaunchCEOLloydDampsaidhewasawareoftheissues,andtheywereintheprocessofworkingoutabetterlocationforlaunchsiteA.TheexpansionplansareunderreviewbytheGovernmentofSouthAustralia'sPlanSA,aswellastheCommonwealthGovernmentforcompliancewiththeEnvironmentProtectionandBiodiversityConservationAct1999(EPBCAct).
