Inmoderntimes,thetermevolutioniswidelyused,butthetermsevolutionismandevolutionistarerarelyusedinscientificcirclestorefertothebiologicaldiscipline.Thetermevolutionwaspopularisedduringthe19thcenturybyHerbertSpencertomeanculturalevolution;i.e.theincreasingcomplexityofcultures(seeHistoryofthetheoryofculturalevolution)—itwasonlylaterthatitacquireditsbiologicalmeaning.Advocacyofsuchtheorywascalledevolutionism.
