ChevéCavewasdiscoveredinthemid-1980sbyBillFarrandCarolVesely.Sincethenithasbeenpushedtothedepthof1,484metres(4,869 ft),makingittheseconddeepestcaveintheAmericas.Asof2015thecavesystemhadthegreatestprovendepthpotentialintheworldasprovenbyadyetracefromitsmainentrancetotheresurgence2,547meterslower.TheterminusofthemainChevésystemisalargebreakdownpilereachedafterdivingthroughtwosumps.Itisjustover9kilometersfromtheentrance,makingitoneofthemostremoteundergroundlocationsonearth.Duetothelogisticaldifficultiesofcontinuingexplorationfromthispoint,expeditionsarefocusingonfindingmid-wayentrancesthatmightprovideaquickerrouteintothemiddleChevésystem.[6] OnMarch1,1991,Indianacaver,ChristopherYeager,madeafatalmistakewhilerappellingthe23-meterdropinChevéCave.[7]Elevendaysaftertheaccident,Yeagerwasburiedinapassagenearwherehefell.[8]OnFebruary8,1992,almostayearafterhisdeath,ateamofYeager’scavingfriendsusedropesandpulleystopullhisbodytothesurfacewhichwasreturnedtohisfamilyinIndiana.[9] In2004,aninternationalcavingexpeditionledbytheU.S.DeepCavingTeamdiscoveredanewcavetheynamedJ2.TheentranceofJ2located5kilometersnortheastoftheChevéCaveentrance.J2appearstoheadinthedirectionofChevéCave,withapredictedintersectionbeyondthetunnelcollapsethatstoppedtheteamin2003.CurrentexpeditionsareunderwaytofindaconnectionbetweenJ2andChevéCave,whichwillproduceacavesystemmorethan2kilometersindepth.Theintegrationoftheentiresystemwillproducea2,597meterdeepcaveandwouldrepresentthedeepestcaveintheworld.[10][11] Pre-HispanicpeoplesusedChevéCavefortheirceremonialpractices.IntheCuicatecregion,mostbeliefsfocusonamysticalfigurecalledSeñordelCerro("LordoftheHill")whodwellsinChevéandcuressoulsissaidtoresidethere.NumerousCuicatecartifactshavebeenfoundwithinitspassages.OnJanuary24and25,1988,theChevéArchaeologicalProject(CAP)ledbyAmericanarchaeologistJanetFitzsimmonsincooperationwitharchaeologistsfromtheInstitutoNacionaldeAntropologíaeHistoria(INAH)Oaxacadivision,explored,recordedandmappedportionsofthecave.Theydiscoveredimpressivejadebeads,awoodenmask,insituvessels,buriedhumanremainsandobsidianblades,believedtohavebeenusedinbloodlettingceremonies.ThegreatestfindofthesurveywasaturquoisemosaictabletthatwasdiscoveredinChamber1ofthecave,namedtheCuevaChevéTablet.ThetabletdatestotheLatePostclassicPeriod(1250–1500AD).Onequadrantpatternincludesabattlescenewithwinnersandlosers.ThecavewasalsolikelyusedfromtheClassicPeriod(250–750AD),andevidencethatthecavecontinuestobeusedceremoniallytodaybythelocalCuicatecs.[13]
