MethodsofLiteraryandCulturalStudies Spring2015/Sections02,03/GeorgetownUniversity Skiptocontent ←History:ASubjectofArt MarxistCritiqueofNovelasForm→ BaseandSuperstructure PostedonApril6,2015byMichaelLewers TherearetwomainpointsofinterestsinMarx’scriticismonliterature.Thefirstistherelationshipbetweenthepastandthepresentwithregardtoartandliterature,andthesecondistherelevanceofbaseandsuperstructure.Marxdefinesthebaseasthesocialrelationsbetweenmenwhichcreateandproducematerialsthatareeventuallyputupforexchange.Fromthebasecomesasuperstructureinwhichlaws,politics,religionandliteraturelegitimizethepowerofthesocialclassesthatareformedinthebase.So,forMarx,artandliteratureareasuperstructureofsociety.Marxnotesthatthereisan“unequalrelationship”betweenartandsociety.Meaningthatamoredeveloped,productivesocietydoesnothaveahighlevelofartisticachievement.HereferencestheGreeksasasocietywheretheepicwascreated,yeteconomicdevelopmentwaslacking.Marxalsostatesthatthesuperstructure“hasitsowntempoofdevelopment,whichisnotreducibletoamereexpressionofclassstruggleorthestateoftheeconomy”.Despitethisview,Marxalsostatesthat“artisdeterminedbyamodeofproduction”.Thisseemingcontradictioncanberesolvedwithasimpleexample.Manyview T.S.Eliot’spoem,TheWasteLand,asadirectreflectionofideologicalandeconomicfactors.Ifoneweretocriticallyanalyzethepoeminthislight,thenonewouldfailtoobserveawholeotherseriesof“levels”whichexistbetweenthepoemandtheeconomicbase,namely:theauthor’sclassposition,spirituality,philosophy,andform.Marxoffersaveryindepthcriticismofliteraturewhichisnotlimitedtoonecomponent(suchasevaluatingatextinhistoricalcontextorinitsformalcontextexclusively).Marxaccentuatestheimportanceallthecomponentstobeevaluatedwhencriticizingatext.
