THE“202”SEMINARWASATHINKTANKFORBRAINSTORMINGNEWTHEORY.WhereastheTA101lectureswereaimedatintroducingtransactionalanalysisconceptstoanewlyinterestedaudience,the202seminarwasstrictlyforadvancedtheorymakingbyprofessionalsmeetingweeklyatEricBerne’shomeTuesdaynightsinSanFrancisco. ThepurposewastobrainstormnewTAtheory;timeusedwasnotspentontrainingpurposes.Bernelaiddownhisbreakthroughnewrulesfortheorymakingusingacuteobservationandintuitiontofindthecommondenominatorsinhumanbehavior,alwaysputinsimplelayman’slanguageandreducedtoitscoretruthsusingOccam’sRazorofParsimony.AfterthemeetingswhenitwasturnfortheChildtohavefun,weallparticipatedin“fieldtrips”and“jumpingupanddownparties.”  THE1960sBACKDROP. Allthisnewthinkingoccurredhistoricallyinsynchronicitywiththebackdropoftherevolutionary1960sinSanFranciscowhereBerne’shomewasneartheHaight-Ashburydistrict.Tothatnewgenerationsmovement,BernecontributedenlightenmentandpermissionbydiagrammingthattheParentwasNOTthesameastheAdult;andthat“TheChildisthemostimportantegostatewithalltheotheregostatessetuptoprotectit.” His1964book“GamesPeoplePlay”wasabestsellerforovertwoyearsandattractedthousandstoabetterwayofunderstandingsocialrelationships.  Inthatbackdrop,Bernetoowasarevolutionaryforthosetimes,andhe,too,waschallengingtheCriticalParent,butinarevolutionagainsttheentrenchedestablishmentpsychiatricParentandthevaguescienceoftheoldways.Heoncedeclared“Icouldhavespenttherestofmylifedisprovingpsychoanalysis,butIdecidedtoinventtransactionalanalysisinstead.”Asagiftedleader,heempoweredhisfollowerswithan“UsAgainstThem”pride,whilechuckling“OuthereinCaliforniawerebuildinganewMercedesBenzbutbackEasttheyarestilldrivingaModelTFord.” Hewasahumorist,oncereferringtotheDSMIIas“TheStandardizedListOfPutdowns.” Totheestablishedtreatmentapproaches,withhiswryhumor,hereferredtothemas“chickensoup”and“religion”andnottrue“science;”andfavoringa“treat”overa“treatment.” Stressingoriginality,whenDylansang“TheTimesTheyAreA-Changing,”Berneechoedwith“Don’tsayanythingthathaseverbeensaidbefore,”andforamorescientificstudyofselfandrelationships,hesaid“Don’tsayanythingthatcannotbediagrammed.” Andinadirectchallengetotheinbredpsychoanalyticwritingstyle,hesaidthatTAwritingshouldbeforthepeople,thelayman,andmustbe“understandabletoan8year-oldchild,amid-westfarmer,andanM.I.T.professor.” ERICBERNEwasanobjectivescientist,ahighlytrainedphysicianandpsychiatristwhorebelledagainstthevague,experientialsubjectiveworldofthecurrentpsychoanalyticestablishmentandtheircomplicatedlanguage.Totheirchargestohimof“intellectualizing,”hereplied,“Werespectourpatientsintelligence.” Theywouldsaytohim“Yoursisoversimplified,”andtothatheretorted“Yoursisovercomplicated.” Athishomehegatheredaprofessionalgroupincludingmanydoctors;Goulding,Harris,Everts,Karpman,Dusay,Steiner,Kupfer,andothers,andwelcomedalldisciplinesequally,tohelpsetdownanewgame-changingsetofstrictstandardsofgreaterobjectivityinpsychiatricthoughtthanhadeverbeenknownbefore. Atthecoreofhistheorywastheobservablesocialtransaction,atransactionalrealityinobjectivefactsthatcouldbe“photographedandtaperecorded,”asopposedtoimaginarytransferencesandaninvisibleSuperEgo,Ego,andIdthatcouldnotbe“photographedandtaperecorded.” Hehadahighstandardofrigorousobjectivethinkingaboutwhatrealpeopledointherealworld,notintheprotectedsubjectiveworldoftheanalystscouch. 202RULES. Wewerenotallowedtochat. Hewouldsay“Hey,gang,we’reindangerofhavinganinterestingevening. Let’sgetsomeworkdone.” Wehadtofollowhismuchhigherstandardofthoughtthanwaseverknowntotheindustry.Noalcoholwasallowed.Nopsychoanalyticwordswereallowed. Iwasoncekickedoutforaweekforusingthenon-transactionalword“dependency.”Imaginetodayifheheardthephrase“engulfmentandco-creativityinatransferentialfield”iftheywerenotputintodiagramswiththeexacttransactionsquotedwithvividimagery!  202RULENUMBERONE. Thefirstrulewasthatthepresenterhadtowritealegitimatequestionontheblackboardthatwouldthenbethetheoryproblemfortheaudiencetosolve. Thisalsoremovedanyone-up,one-downsuperiorityadvantageforthespeaker-theaudienceautomaticallyhadsuperiorknowledgetothepresenter. Newtheory,concretelyhardened,hadtobeinventedeveryweekandsoonwrittenuptogointothenextissueoftheT.A.B.withhimselfaseditor.Bernewouldfrequentlyreadfromthebookshewaswritinginhisleadershiproletoinspireanddemonstratethecreationofnewtheory. WithsuperbleadershipskillshealsocreatedanITAAinternationalorganizationwithofficers,levelsoftraining,articlespublished,andconferencesthatareflourishingtodayin60countriesacrosstheglobe. “TATHENANDNOW.” Tothisthemeofthis2010BerneCentenaryTAJ,andITAAConference,heldinBerne’sbirthplaceofMontreal,wecanlookforwardhistoricallyfromtheThentotheNow. WaybackTHEN,psychoanalysiswastheThesis,soBerneestablishedTAasanewAntithesisinpsychiatry.TATHENwasournewThesis.  NOWinTA,wehaveanewAnti-thesistothat;asubjectiveexperientialRelationalTA. Ourlong-termgoal,toavoidasplit,couldbeafullSynthesisinTA,buttobeTA,soundinglikeBerne,notFreud.AlongertermgoalcouldbeforBerne’sTAtotakeovertheCBTfield,andtheRelationalTAtotakeovertheAnalyticfield. THESIS,ANTITHESIS,SYNTHESIS. Intheearlydays,thefirstSynthesisinTAoccurredwhentheGouldingSchool,andalsoCathexisschools,used regressiontherapytechniquestoplumbdeeperlevelsoftheChildexperientially,butthenreturningtoAdultconsciousnesstomakeobjectivescienceoftheoriginaltheorythemethoduncovered,withnewinsights,diagrams,andliststhatweretruetoBerne’sOccam’sRazorstandard. TheThreeR’sofTAregressiontherapyforthe“NOW”couldbeRedecision,Reparenting,andRelational. JUSTGETOUTOFTHEGAMEANDMOVEON! Mostpeoplejustwanttogetoutofthegameandnotknowthewhysinvolved. TheseCompassionTrianglesgivessomeoneadditionalperspectivetothegame,awayofdiffusingit,andawaytoremoveoneselffromthegame. “TransactionalOptions”canalsobeusedtogetout,amongotherways. ThiswillbediscussedlaterasweputtwocompassiontrianglestogethertomovefromtheprinciplesofFamilyPeacetoWorldPeace. Withtimefortheaudiencediscussion,otherTAmodelswillbediscussedbythemanyTApeoplewhoareworkingontheproblemofWorldPeaceintheirownway,inthespiritoftheclassic“HundredthMonkey”story.   THECOMPASSIONTRIANGLES. Tosavetimewritingnotesatthelecture,hereIprintthreevariationsoftheCompassionTrianglethatwillbeusedlaterintheWorldPeaceTriangles. Thefollowingwillbepresentineachgameplayer;selfandother: TheCompassionTrianglesforyournotes:   WORLDPEACETRIANGLES. Now,placingtwoCompassionTrianglestogether,wecangetaglimpseatwhatcanbecalledTheWorldPeaceTriangles. Illustratedhere,whenbothSelfandOtherlookdeeperintothemselvesandtheiradversary,withtheincreasedflexibilityandcompassion,thereissomehope,withunderstanding,ofmovingbeyondthestuckplaceofself-interest,hiddenagendasandbiases. IN-SIGHTTRIANGLES Usuallypeoplewanttouseknowledgeofthetriangletojustgetoutofthegamequicklyandmoveon,withnointerestinunderstandingthewhys. Buttoexploreanindividualfurtherwhileagameisplaying,thereisinsidethem,positiveandnegativeunrecognizedfeelings,roles,andgamesthatcanbeenteredintoone’sintrapersonaldramatriangle,showninthefirstdiagrambelow. Theconversationswithinthemselvesareamonologue. ThetwodiagramsontherightbelowareScriptDramaTriangleswhere,ifmotivatedandallowed,wecanlookdeepertounderstandtheoriginsofthegamesinchildhoodthatprovidetheblueprintsforlatergames,givingadditionalcompassion. ThesefamilyscripttrianglescanberedrawnasaRedecisionTriangleoraTransferenceTriangle. ForTheRedecisionTriangle,thesocialleveloutertrianglebothshowtherolesinthefamilygames,andalsoshowthethreemotivationsofwhythechildacceptstheinjunction. Inthemostinnertriangleatthefarrightisthethreestepstomakingthedecisionandredecision;forexample,theVictimcornerishowdidthechildfeelattheScriptscene,thentheRescuecornerishowdidtheyinterprettheworldasaprotectivedefense,andfinallythePersecutorcornerhasthe13limiting“Don’t”injunctions/decisions.     DARWINIANPROOFOFTHEPREVAILINGTHREEROLETHEORY. Usingtheprinciplesofthe202ofscientificpersistenceandOccam’sRazortofindcoreuniversalcommondenominators,wemovedeeperinsidethefamilytrianglestoanothertrianglewithinthetriangle,toalevelofautonomicbio-dynamics.Inthelargecombineddiagrambelow,Ishowthebiologicallevelofathreepartdynamicrelationshipbetweenthecells. Forinstanceinseratoninexchange,R=fluidResupply,V=fluidReception,andP=fluidRestriction(SSRImedication)makingforahealthyhomeostaticdynamic. FortheDNAlevel,thereistheDNAthatimprovesthespecies,(R);DNAthatdoomsthespecies,(P);andDNAthatremainsthesame,(V). PerhapsfortheWorldPeaceinthisdiscussion,theretooisathesisandtheantithesis,searchingforthesynthesis,andthesamehealingpropertiesofdeepinsightcompassionwithselfandothercanapply. Asensitiveattentionoftheprinciplesofco-creativitybelowalsoapplytoselfandother.
