TheDramaTriangleExplainedbykrishna|Dec4,2020|LeadershipTribeTheDramaTrianglewasfirstdescribedbyStephenKarpmaninthe1960s.Itisamodelofdysfunctionalsocialinteractionsandillustratesapowergamethatinvolvesthreeroles:Victim,Rescuer,andPersecutor,eachrolerepresentsacommonandineffectiveresponsetoconflict. Thejourneyaroundthetrianglecanbedonewithselforanother,suchasaspouse,child,co-worker,andsoon.Mostofusareneurologicallyprogrammedtoplaythesethreeroles,andweconsciouslyorunconsciouslychooseonerolegiventheparticularcontext. FromAgileTrainingtoScrumTraining,OrganisationalCoaching&LeadershipCoaching,FindouthowLeadershipTribecanworkwithyourteam.TheThreeRolesExplained IntheDramaTriangle,eachplayerintheparticularmindgamebeginsbyassumingoneofthethreetypicalroles: Victim–“Poorme.”Victimsoftenfeelvictimised,trapped,helplessandhopeless.Theythinktheyareatthemercyoflife.Theyareunwillingtotakeresponsibilityfortheirundesirablecircumstancesanddon’tthinktheyhavethepowertochangetheirlives. VictimsassumethemselvesaspowerlessorincompetentandblameonPersecutors(canbeotherpeopleoraparticularsituation).TheyalwaysseekforRescuerstosolvetheproblemforthem.IftheVictimscontinuetostayinthe‘dejected’stance,itwillpreventthemfrommakingdecisions,solvingproblems,changingthecurrentstate,orsensinganysatisfactionorachievement. Rescuer–“Letmehelpyou.” RescuersconstantlyinterveneonbehalfoftheVictimsandtrytosaveVictimsfromperceivedharm.Theyfeelguiltyofstandingbyand‘watchingpeopledrown’. Rescuersmayhaveallthegoodintentionandstriveto‘help’otherpeopleastheyseenecessary.Theyfailtorealisethatbyofferingshort-termfixestoVictims,theykeepVictimsdependentandneglecttheirownneeds.ThisiswhyRescuersoftenfindthemselvespressured,tired,andmaynothavetimetofinishtheirowntasks,astheyarebusyfire-fightingfortheVictimsastheyarise! Persecutor–“It’sallyourfault.” Persecutorsarelike‘CriticalParents’whoarestrictandfirmandsetboundaries.Theytendtothinkthattheymustwinatanycost. PersecutorsblametheVictimsandcriticizethebehaviourofRescuers,withoutprovidingappropriateguidance,assistanceorasolutiontotheproblem.Theyarecriticalandgoodatfindingfault,andcontrolwithorderandrigidity.TheykeeptheVictimsoppressedandsometimescanbeabully. AreyouaVictim,Rescuer,orPersecutor? NowyouareawareoftheDramaTriangleandtherolesinthetriangularsetting.Soareyouavictim,arescuer,orapersecutor? Ifyou’rehuman,chancesareyoumayseeyourselforbeseenbyothers,asallthreeindifferentscenarios. ItisimportanttopointoutthattheplayersintheDramaTrianglemayswitchrolesduringamindgame,andifanyoneinthistrianglechangesroles,theothertworoleschangeaswell.
