TheWordofGoddeclaresthesestatements,theSpiritofGodaffirmsthesetruths,butasfollowersofJesus,dowelivebythem?Asweconsiderthisquestion,we’llbereflectingonIsaiah43andtheworshipsong“WayMaker”byLeeland.Ifyouhaveamoment,readIsaiah43first.Listentotheworshipsongaswell,ormaybeasyoureadthrough. Haveyoueverfoundyourselfinaplaceinlifewhenyouthink,“Idon’tknowwheretogofromhere”or“I’mnotsureifI’llmakeitthroughthis”?Haveyoueverneededamiracle?Ithinkmostofuscanrelatetothesefeelings.Notinthesameways,butwehaveallknownwhatitmeanstostruggle.ThatispartofhavingfaithinGod.Thatiswhatitmeanstohavefaith:tohavehopeandconfidenceinthepromisesofGodevenwhenwecan’tseeawayforwardorhowwecanbeforgivenorhowourwoundscanbehealed. TheIsraelitesdealtwiththesameissuesthroughouttheOldTestament,bothasindividualsandasapeople.TheexodusfromEgyptisastoryofGodmiraculouslymakingawayforHischildren.Ifwecouldbeintheirshoes(orsandals),I’msurewewouldhaveknowntheoppressiontheyfelt,theiroverwhelmingsenseofhopelessness,theconfusionoverwhereGodhasbeenintheirlives.ButGodmadeaway.HekeptHispromisetoleadthemtoabetterfuture.Whennatureandtheirownunderstandingstoodintheway,Godworkedmiracles.HesplittheseasoIsraelcouldwalkthrough.Whentheywanderedinthewilderness,Godwentbeforethemasapillaroffireandcloud,alightinthedarkness. Isaiah43:16-19tellsus, ThisiswhattheLORDsays–Hewhomadeawaythroughthesea,apaththroughthemightywaters,whodrewoutthechariotsandhorses,thearmyandreinforcementstogether,andtheylaythere,nevertoriseagain,extinguished,snuffedoutlikeawick:“Forgettheformerthings;donotdwellonthepast. See,Iamdoinganewthing!Nowitspringsup;doyounotperceiveit?Iammakingawayinthewildernessandstreamsinthewasteland.” IsaiahsharesthiswithIsraelcenturiesaftertheexodus.Evenstill,itisapowerfulremindertoIsrael(andtous)thatGodisawaymaker.IfweconsiderthecontextofIsaiah,weseethatIsaiahisprophesyingabouttheBabyloniancaptivity,aperiodinIsrael’shistorywhentheywouldbecarriedofftoaforeignlandasprisonersfordecades.Butwhenhesaysthis,itisoverahundredyearsbeforethatwillhappen.So,acenturybeforeanyIsraelitehasbeencarriedofftoBabylon,beforetheirtrialhaseverbegun,Godhaspromisedtomakeaway.Thereisapowerfulreminderforustodayhere:wemaynotknowwhattrialswaitforusinthefuture,butweknowweserveaGodwhohaspromisedtoleadusthroughthem. ThepeopleofIsraelspentalotoftimestrugglinginthewildernessorincaptivity.AsfollowersofJesus,wecan’tfullyrelatetoliving40yearsinthedesertbeforethetimeofelectricityormodernconvenience.Butmostofusknowsomeonebattlingcancer.Believersandfriendsandfamilyareheldcaptivebydepression.Manyhavebeenaffectedbythepainofchildlessness,miscarriage,maritalstruggles,ordivorce.Othersarelostintheirfaith,unsureofhowtoreturntotheFather.Somehaveexperiencedloss.Thelossofadream,aspouse,orachild.Therearesomanywayswecanexperiencepainanddifficultyinourlives. Maybeyou’rereallystrugglingtoday.Maybeyou’reinagreatplace.Maybeafriendorfamilymemberisinatoughplace.Whateverthecircumstance,knowthatGodismakingawayinthewilderness,andHewillrestorestreamsoflivingwatertothewasteland.RestintheknowledgethatGodisawaymaker,amiracleworker,apromisekeeper,andalightinthedarkness. Whenyoufeeldefeated,trapped,orjustexhausted...Godisawaymaker. Whenyoudon’tseeanywaytogetthroughthis...Godisamiracleworker. Whenyoudon’tknowhowtotrustanymore...Godisapromisekeeper.
