Korea’sspacedevelopmentroadmap,adoptedattheendof2007,includedachievingcompletetechnologicalindependenceonthemainbodysatellitesby2016,developinga300ton-classKoreanlaunchvehicle,orprojectile,by2017,andlaunchingalunarmodulein2025.Plansalsoprovideforactiveparticipationininternationaljointresearchanddevelopmentasafullmemberofthespaceclub. Thespacedevelopmentprogramincludesa3-stepKoreanlaunchvehicleproject.Thefirststep(2011~2014)aimedatconstructingtestfacilitiesanddevelopinga5~10tonliquidengine.Insteptwo(2015~2018),Koreawilldevelopa75tonliquidengine,whichwillbetheprimaryenginefortheKoreanlaunchvehicle,andtestlaunchthisengine. Koreahasalreadyembarkedonthedevelopmentofthe75tonenginewiththecoretechnologyfora30tonliquidengine,whichitacquiredin2006whilemanufacturingNaro.Instepthree(2019~2021),Koreawilldevelopa300tonenginebycombiningfour75tonengines,andin2021,attempttolaunchaKoreanlaunchvehicleandsatelliteintospace.ThegovernmentwasalsoplanningtoacceleratetheKoreanrocketprojecttocompleteitatanearlierdate.ThesuccessfullaunchofNaroonJanuary30willbeameaningfulstartingpoint. AsystemdesignhasbeenconductedoftheliquidrocketengineforKoreanlaunchvehicle(KSLV-II,KoreaSpaceLaunchVehicleII).Thepresentturbopump-fedliquidrocketengineofvacuumthrust76tonandvacuumspecificimpulse297secadoptsgasgeneratorcycle.Thecombustionpressureoftheregenerativelycooledcombustorwas60bar.ThepropellantwasLOx/kerosene.TheenginewasstartedbypyrostarterandthecombustorwasignitedbyTEA(TriEthylAluminium). SouthKoreawillsoonenterthesecondstageofitsprogramtodevelopthecountry’sownspacevehicleby2021,thegovernmentsaid30July2015.Thesecond,three-yearstageoftherocketdevelopmentplanwillbeginatthestartofnextmonth,inwhichthecountrywilldevelopa75-tonthrustengine,accordingtotheMinistryofScience,ICTandTechnology. Followingasuccessfuldevelopmentofa75-tonthruster,thecountrywillbuilda300-tonbooster,usingfour75-tonthrustengines,whichwillbecapableofsendinga1.5-tonsatelliteintospace.The300-tonspacerocket,namedtheKoreaSpaceLaunchVehicle2(KSLV-II),willbetest-firedduringthethirdandfinalstageofthespaceprogramthatwillcommenceinApril2018. ThelaunchoftheKoreaSpaceLaunchVehicle-2(KSLV-2),alsoknownas“Nuri,”fromtheNaroSpaceCenterwaspostponedfromFebruary2021toOctober2021,whileasecondlaunchtoputaone-and-a-halftonsatelliteintoEarth’sorbitwillbepushedbackfromOctober2021toMay2022.TheMinistryofScienceandICTannouncedthereviseddateson29December2020duringameetingofapresidentialcommitteeonspacedevelopment.Thecommitteedecidedtochangethepreviouslaunchdatesaftertakingintoaccountanassessmentbyanevaluationteamcomprisedof15academicandindustrialexperts.TheteamconcludedthattheNuri’sfirstlaunchshouldtakeplacenextOctoberanditssecondinMay2022forabettersuccessrateandstabledevelopment. Thefirststageofthe1.96trillion-won(US$1.68billion)programbeganinMarch2010,inwhichthecountrysuccessfullybuiltandtest-fireda7-tonthrustengine,theministrysaid.“Wehaveachievedourmainobjectivesofdevelopinga7-tonliquidengineandbuildinganenginetestfacilityunderthefirstdevelopmentstage,andwecannowenterthesecondstageoftheprogramtodevelopa75-tonenginesystemandbuildatestlaunchvehicle,”itsaid. SouthKoreasuccessfullyconductedthefirstcombustiontestfora75-tonliquid-fuelenginethatwillgointothefirstandsecondstagesofthedomesticKoreaSpaceLaunchVehicle-2(KSLV-2).TheKoreaAerospaceResearchInstitutesaid04June2016thatitconductedtheenginetestattheNaroSpaceCenterinGoheung,SouthJeollaProvince,on03June2016. TheKSLV,whichaimsforliftoffintheyears2019and2020,consistsofthreestages.Four75-tonengineswillbetiedupforthebottomstage,overwhichone75-tonliquidenginewillbeplaced.Oneseven-tonliquidenginewillbeinsertedinthethirdstage. Acombustiontestofa75-tonenginethatgoesintotheKoreaSpaceLaunchVehicle(KSLV)-IIwassuccessfullyheldattheNaroSpaceCenterinGoheung,SouthJeollaProvinceon09June2016.TheKoreaAerospaceResearchInstitute(KARI)saidthatitcompletedassemblingaprototypeofthefirst75-tonliquidfuelengineandconductedacombustiontestthatlasted75seconds.Intheprevioustest,thecombustionlasted30seconds.TheinstitutewillproduceaprototypeofthesecondenginebySeptember2016andattemptacombustiontestlasting140seconds.Instabilitywasreportedinthecombustionofthedomesticallymanufacturedengine,whichwasthekeycomponentoftheKSLV,butitappearstheproblemhasbeenresolvedthroughrepeatedtests. SouthKoreawasalsointheprocessofsecuringtechnologythatenablesweldingtheextremelythinpropellanttankwithoutalterations.TheKARIplannedtocompletedevelopingtheKSLV-IIforatestlaunchbytheendof2017.Italsoeyesalunarexplorationby2020.Thespacelaunchvehiclewillcomprisefour75-tonengines,withafirst-stagerockettoreachthethrustofaround300tons. Thetestcarrierrocketwassettoreachthealtitudeofupto180to220kilometersandthencruiseforabout10minutesbeforefallingintothewatersoffthesoutherncoastofSouthKorea'sJejuIsland.Therocketwasslatedtobetest-launchedon25October2018fromtheNaroSpaceCenterinthecountry'ssouthwesterncountyofGoheung.Thistestlaunchwasforonlythesecond-stageoftheNuri'spropulsion,withthefirstandthird-stageenginestobetestedstartingearlyin2019. Thecountry'ssecondcarrierrocket,knownasKoreaSpaceLaunchVehicle2orNuri,meaning"theworld"inancientKorean,wasathree-stagevehicledevelopedentirelywithhomegrowntechnologyusing75tonthrustenginestolaunchsatellitesintotheorbit.On28November2018at4p.m.Koreatime,therocketenginewassuccessfullylaunchedfromtheNaroSpaceCenterinGoheung,Jeollanam-doProvince.Therocketflewforabouttenminutes.Itreachedapeakaltitudeofroughly200kilometersaftersomethreehundredsecondsintoflightbeforesplashingdownininternationalwatersoffthesoutheasterncoastofJeju-doIsland.AccordingtotheMinistryofScienceandICTandKoreaAerospaceResearchInstitute,theenginefully-combustedforone-hundred-fifty-oneseconds,elevensecondslongerthanwhattheteamconsidersasuccessfulrun. Thestagewasnearlytwenty-sixmetershigh,threemeterswide,andweighedinatfifty-twotons.TheenginelaunchwasatrialrunforNuri.Fouroftheengineswillbeusedinthefirststage,andoneonthesecondstageofKSLV-2,asthewholerocketisscheduledtoblastoffin2021. SouthKorea'sfinalcombustiontestom25March2021forthemainengineofitsfirsthomegrownrocketwasdeemedasuccess.TheMinistryofScienceandICTandtheKoreaAerospaceResearchInstitutesaidthatthethirdtestforthefirst-stageenginesoftheKoreaSpaceLaunchVehicle-2(KSLV-2),alsoknownas“Nuri,”wentsmoothly,displayingastablesupplyofpropellantsandcombustion.Withthetest,whichalsofinalizedthedevelopmentofthree-stageengines,theagencieswillonlyneedtoassembletherocket’sflightmodelandrehearsebeforethescheduledlaunchwithamockpayloadattheNaroSpaceCenterinGoheung,SouthJeollaProvinceinOctober2021. Thesecondlaunch,whichwillcarryanactualsatelliteweighingone-point-fivetonstoputitintoEarth’sorbit,issettobemadeinMay2022.Ifthelaunchgoessuccessfully,SouthKoreawillbecometheworld’sseventhcountrywiththetechnologicalcapacitytobuilditsownspacelaunchvehicles. SouthKorea'stestlaunch21Octobe2021ofitsfirstdomestically-builtrocketendedinfailure.AccordingtotheKoreaAerospaceResearchInstitute,thelaunchhadbeenseenasamajorsteptowardjumpstartingthecountry'sspaceprogram.Thethree-stageliquidfuelrocket,called"theNuri,"blastedoffat5:00pmlocaltimefromtheNaroSpaceCenterinGoheungcounty.Theliftoffwassmooth,andtheCenterconfirmedafter15minutesthattherockethadsuccessfullydeployeditssatellitedummy.However,after30minutesofmonitoring,SouthKoreanPresidentMoonJae-insaidtheNurirockethadcompletedallflightsequencesbuthadfailedtoputthedummysatellitepayloadintoorbit.Hecitedproblemsduringthefinalsteps. Thefailurewasasetbackforthecountry'sspaceprogram.SouthKoreaaimstojointheexclusivegroupofnationscapableoflaunchingadomestically-producedsatelliteofoverone-and-a-halftons."TheNuri"usedentirelydomestictechnologies,fromtheinitialconcepttodesign,production,aswellastestandlaunchoperations.PresidentMoonJae-inrecentlysaidthecountryintendstoexpanditsinvestmentinspacetechnology.Thegovernmentisseekinganannualspacebudgetof553milliondollarsfor2022,inabidtonurturethecountry'snascentdomesticspacesector.
