Design: ThefirstshipwaslaiddowninAugust1944,whilethelastwas launchedinMarch1946.InthattimetheUnitedStatesproduced98 Gearing-classdestroyers.TheGearingclasswasaseeminglyminor improvementofthepreviousAllenM.Sumnerclass,whichwerebuilt from1943until1945.ThemaindifferencewasthattheGearingswere 14feet(4.3m)longerinthemidshipsection,allowingfor increasedfueltankageforgreaterrange,animportantconsideration inPacificWaroperations.Moreimportantlyinthelongrun,the Gearings'increasedsizemadethemmuchmoresuitableforupgrades thantheAllenM.Sumners,asseeninthewartimeradarpicket subclass,the1950sradarpicketdestroyer(DDR)andescort destroyer(DDE)conversions,andtheFleetRehabilitationand Modernization(FRAM)conversions1960-65.Asdesigned,theGearings' armamentwasidenticaltothatontheAllenM.Sumnerclass.Three twin5-inch(127mm)/38caliberMark38dualpurpose(DP)mounts constitutedthemainbattery.The5-inchgunswereguidedbyaMark 37GunFireControlSystemwithaMark25firecontrolradarlinked byaMark1AFireControlComputerstabilizedbyaMark68,500rpm gyro.Thisfirecontrolsystemprovidedeffectivelong-range anti-aircraft(AA)oranti-surfacefire.Twelve40mmgunsintwo quadandtwotwinmountsand1120mmgunsinsinglemountswere alsoequipped.TheinitialdesignretainedtheSumners'heavy torpedoarmamentof1021"(533mm)tubesintwoquintuplemounts, firingtheMark15torpedo.Asthethreatfromkamikazeaircraft mountedin1945,andwithfewremainingJapanesewarshipstouse torpedoeson,mostoftheclasshadtheafterquintuple21-inch(533 mm)torpedotubemountreplacedbyanadditional40mmquadruple mount(priortocompletiononlaterships)for16total40mmguns. 26ships(DD-742-745,805-808,829-835,and873-883)wereordered withouttorpedotubestoallowforradarpicketequipment;these wereredesignatedasDDRsin1948. 1946-59upgrades: FollowingWorldWarIImostoftheclasshadtheirAAand anti-submarinewarfare(ASW)armamentupgraded.The40mmand20mm gunswerereplacedby2-63-inch(76mm)/50calibergunsinupto twotwinandonesinglemounting.Onedepthchargerackwasremoved andtwoHedgehogASWmortarmountsadded.TheK-gunswereretained. Nineadditional(foratotalof35)shipswereconvertedtoradar picketdestroyers(DDR)intheearly1950s;thesetypicallyreceived onlyone3-inch/50calibertwinmounttosaveweightforradar equipment,asdidthewartimeradarpickets.Nineshipswere convertedtoescortdestroyers(DDE),emphasizingASW.Carpenterwas themostthoroughDDEconversion,with43-inch/70calibergunsin twinenclosedmounts,twoWeaponAlphalaunchers,fournew21-inch torpedotubesfortheMark37ASWtorpedo,andonedepthcharge rack. FRAMIupgrade: Inthelate1950sandearly1960s78oftheGearing-classdestroyers underwentextensivemodernizationoverhauls,knownasFRAMI,which weredesignedtoconvertthemfromananti-aircraftdestroyertoan anti-submarinewarfareplatform.FRAMIremovedalloftheDDRand DDEequipment,andtheseshipswereredesignatedasDDs.FRAMIand FRAMIIconversionswerecompleted1960-65.Eventuallyallbutfour GearingsreceivedFRAMconversions. TheFRAMIprogramwasanextensiveconversionfortheGearing-class destroyers.Thisupgradeincludedrebuildingtheship's superstructure,electronicsystems,radar,sonar,andweapons.The secondtwin5"gunmountandallpreviousAAgunsandASWequipment wereremoved.(Onseveralshipsthetwoforward5-inchmounts remainedandtheaft5-inchmountwasremoved.)Upgradedsystems includedSQS-23sonar,SPS-10surfacesearchradar,twotripleMark 32torpedotubes,an8-cellAnti-SubmarineRocket(ASROC)box launcher,andoneQH-50CDASHASWdronehelicopter,withitsown landingpadandhangar.BoththeMk32torpedotubesandASROC launchedMk44homingASWtorpedoes.ASROCcouldalsolauncha nucleardepthcharge.On11May1962,Agerholmtestedalivenuclear ASROCinthe"Swordfish"test. TheGyrodyneQH-50CDASHwasanunmannedanti-submarinehelicopter, controlledremotelyfromtheship.ThedronecouldcarrytwoMk.44 homingASWtorpedoes.DuringthiseratheASROCsystemhadan effectiverangeofonly5nauticalmiles(9.3km;5.8mi),butthe DASHdroneallowedtheshiptodeployASWattacktosonarcontacts asfaras22nauticalmiles(41km;25mi)away. AnupgradedversionofDASH,QH-50D,remainedinusebytheUnited StatesArmyuntilMay2006. FRAMIIupgrade: TheFRAMIIprogramwasdesignedprimarilyfortheSumner-class destroyers,butsixteenGearingswereupgradedaswell.Thisupgrade programincludedlife-extensionrefurbishment,anewradarsystem, Mark32torpedotubes,DASHASWdrone,andvariabledepthsonar (VDS).Importantly,itdidnotincludeASROC.FRAMIIshipsincluded sixDDRsandsixDDEsthatretainedtheirspecializedequipment (1960–61),aswellasfourDDRsthatwereconvertedtoDDsandwere nearlyidenticaltotheAllenM.Sumner-classFRAMIIs(1962–63). TheFRAMIIshipsretainedallsix5-inchguns,excepttheDDEs retainedfour5-inchgunsandatrainableHedgehogintheNo.2 position.AllFRAMIIsretainedtwoHedgehogsalongsideeitherthe No.25-inchmountorthetrainableHedgehogmount.ThefourDDRs convertedtoDDswerearmedwithtwonew21-inchtorpedotubesfor theMark37ASWhomingtorpedo.PhotographsofthesixretainedDDRs shownomarkingsontheDASHlandingdeck,aswellasamuchsmaller deckhousethanwasusuallyprovidedforDASH,sotheymaynothave beenequippedwithDASH.
